Break-Up!

July 20, 1968 - Jane sitting pensively in the BBC TV studios Saturday night on the set of Simon Dee’s show “Dee Time” before she shocked millions of viewers by announcing that her five year romance with Paul McCartney was over. This was also the first public confirmation that Paul & Jane had become officially engaged seven months earlier when Paul proposed on Christmas Day & gave her an emerald & diamond engagement ring.

She made her statement calmly and without emotion: “I’m finished with Paul. I haven’t broken it off, but it’s finished." Jane confirmed that the break-up happened more than "a couple of days ago.” … and added, “I loved Paul very much once, and he loved me. I hope I helped him a little." Jane denied that she ended the relationship "I didn’t break the engagement off, but it’s finished.”

Speculation about the couple rose when Paul attended the premiere of “Yellow Submarine” alone (July 17th). Paul was as surprised as everyone else as he & Francie Schwartz (the woman who was in bed with Paul when Jane found them) watched the show from his Cavendish Avenue home, and said nothing as he left London for his father’s home in Cheshire shortly after the announcement. Jane wouldn’t speak to reporters after the show, “I don’t want to say anything about it.”
