Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Barclays Premier League with victory over fellow strugglers West Ham United.

Mick McCarthy’s team came into the match in 16th position, a place above West Ham and took a half-time lead through Kevin Doyle taking advantage of a misplaced backpass by James Tomkins.

After the break David Jones set up Ronald Zubar to double Wolves’ lead on 58 minutes and it increased when Matt Jarvis, who was to sign for West Ham two years later, three minutes later.

Guillermo Franco’s goal at the death for West Ham was merely a consolation for manager Gianfranco Zola, who had called the match “a six-pointer”.
