I'd kill for a good coming out story rn, maybe Sirius? Or Remus?
Remus sat gingerly on his bed, knees pulled to his chest as he watched Sirius get ready for the night. He told himself he was waiting for a lull in the routine activity to call him over, but he didn’t deny himself the view of Sirius pulling his clothes off one by one. Sweater, tie, he left his shirt on but unbuttoned while he toed off his shoes and pants, until going back to the shirt and walking to the bathroom in his socks and underwear.
“Hey,” He sauntered back out, toothbrush dangling from his lips, “You feel like Hogsmeade this weekend?”
Remus’ tongue felt tacky with nerves, so he just shrugged one shoulder. It seemed to be the response Sirius was hoping for because he nodded, switching his toothbrush to his other cheek,
“Right, me ‘either. ‘Spose to rain. We ‘ould just take o’er the dorm, just relax—“
Sirius cut off abruptly, blinking at the suddenness of Remus’ words, before sucking a string of toothpaste back into his mouth and wiping his chin, nodding, “Yeah. “imme a ‘econd.”
Remus swallowed, listening to the sounds of the faucet being run and cut, keeping his eyes on the bedsheets until the entire bed bounced with Sirius’ weight. When he looked up, Sirius was criss-cross in front of him with a soft, concerned smile on his face.
Remus nodded, clearing his throat, “Yeah, ‘m fine, I just gotta tell you—” He stopped, licking his lips, “It’s no big deal, well, it is.”
Sirius’ brows creased and he nodded, “Okay, that’s—okay, well, ‘m here.”
Remus bit his cheek, “Um.” He pushed his hand through his hair before wrapping it around his leg again, “So, you came out last year, yeah?”
Sirius’ expression shifted and Remus knew he was guessing as to what was about to happen. He quickly caught himself though, “Uh-huh.” He leaned forward, “It was…well,” the corner of his mouth lifted in the same soft smile that Remus liked to think he saw more often than anyone else, “you know how it was.”
Remus did. Sirius had come to the Potters in the last weeks of August with a black eye and equally blue ribs and he’d told them why. When they’d arrived back at Hogwarts, it had slowly got out until he made sure everyone else knew too. Except for a few Slytherin hiccups, he’d been flush with support and congratulations—even a few invitations to Hogsmeade from two Hufflepuff boys and one Ravenclaw. Remus—secretly—had thanked Merlin he had politely declined. Finding out Sirius was gay had been the push he needed over his internal edge, it had made a burning heat flare in his chest that had stayed simmering for the entire year; that still burned in him sitting on this bed.
“Hey, don’t look so sad, Re.” Sirius ducked his head until Remus saw his grin, “I had you, and Prongs, and Pete. Lils, Marlene…And myself. I’m living true, y’know?”
Remus, still worrying his cheek, nodded silently again, “Yeah.” Then a little louder, “Yeah.”
Sirius tilted his head, “Re.”
The soft voice cracked something in Remus and he looked up, “Hm?”
Sirius scooted a little closer, “You can tell me anything. You’re my—“ Remus prepared himself for the friend, but it didn’t come. Sirius redirected the sentence, “We’re us.”
Sirius let them sit in silence for a few moments until, “Are…"
Remus figured it was now or never. Stop, lose the nerve, or dive right in, “For a long time I…I viewed it as just another thing that was different. That people would look at and say, you know—I mean, I don’t know, he’s different. Not that that’s such a bad thing but, but—“ Remus hooked his fingers together around his knees, and let out a long breath, closing his eyes briefly before meeting Sirius’ again, “What I’m trying to fucking say is that I was comparing it to the wolf. And I never had to ‘come out’ about the wolf, did I? You guys figured it out and were okay with it and so it was…easier, if that’s even the right word. But you guys were there and still talking to me so it was okay.”
Sirius sat forward, hands pressing to the tops of Remus’ knees where they were pulled against his chest, “Re, god, this is—“
“No, let me say it.” Remus sat forward a little, trying not to think too hard on Sirius’ palms on his bare knees, “I’m gay.” It was a weight rolling off of his tongue, “I like boys and I realize that that’s not the same as…”
Sirius raised an eyebrow, “As turning into a bloodthirsty werewolf?”
Remus blinked then let out a snort, “Don’t look at me like that.” Sirius let out a laugh of his own, squeezing his hands and making Remus flinch, his own laugh escaping as he yanked out of Sirius’ grasp, “That fucking tickles. Yes, okay? Telling people I’m gay is not the same as being a werewolf but…I mean, you get it, right?”
Sirius nods, leaning back on his hands and trying to ignore the fact that his heart was going a million miles a minute, “Yeah, I mean, it’s scary, Re. I would know, take a look at my family.” Sirius let out a sigh, letting his head loll onto one of his shoulders, eyebrows pulling down, “Probably didn’t help that you know how bad it was for me for a while but,” he shrugged, “like you said. I had you guys. And I feel…for myself, and now for you, I’m proud, yeah? To be who I am. That’s not scary, that’s fucking brilliant and it overshadows any fuck-heads out there who might say different.”
Remus let out a shaky breath, “Yeah. God, I feel…” Another long breath paired with a laugh.
Sirius joined, “Next stop, James.”
Remus shook his head, “I’m not nervous about them.”
Sirius’ smile stuttered, “Oh. But…you were nervous about…me?”
Remus shrugged, looking away, “Yeah, a little, I guess.” Because now that you know, could you like me too?
Sirius sat up straighter, a strange look passing through his eyes, “What, did you think,” The smile was gone now, “You thought I wouldn’t be okay with it?”
Remus’ eyes snapped back to his, “What? What? Oh my god, no. No, Pads—“
“Remus, I’m gay, what the hell—“
Remus felt something snap in his chest, “Exactly.” He clamped his lips shut, “Fuck. I mean,” he closed his eyes, tilting his head back, “Ugh. Yes, I know you are, that’s why I was nervous.”
Sirius was not calmed, “What does that even mean? Wouldn’t I be the most fucking understanding of anyone?”
Remus groaned, “Yes, but—You’re gay.” Sirius blinked at him and Remus gestured wildly between them, “And now you know I’m gay. And so…now that you know, I thought…I hoped…” His throat was closing up.
All the anger from Sirius’ face dropped in a moment, his eyes wide and lips parted, “Re.”
Remus blinked at him, feeling terrified and small, “I’m kind of hoping you can guess what I’m trying to say this time too.”
The room was still for a few beats, and Remus was aware of nothing but Sirius’ frozen stare on him. Then fingers were hooking into the hem of his t-shirt at the back of his neck and he was being gently tugged forward until he met a warm mouth. Remus stopped breathing, and it was only the hand tightening at the back of his neck, joined by another gripping his shoulder, that made him thaw.
He sighed into the heat, into the hands, melting under the fire in his chest that popped and blazed, and the matching fire that was Sirius. His own fingers unlocked, looping Sirius’ wrists and releasing his knees which parted for Sirius to crawl between, pushing him down to the pillows.
Sirius’ dry lips snagged on Remus’, breath huffing against his skin in a soft phrase, “How’m I doing?”
“So good.” Remus pressed his palms under Sirius’ shirt, splaying on his back, feeling the low laugh against his palms and chest.
They kissed until the the lock on the dorm door jiggled. Sirius rolled off him just as James entered, followed by Peter.
James offered them a little salute, yawning, “Hey, lads, y’alright?”
Remus let out a panting breath, vaguely aware that his cheeks were flushed, “James, Pete, I’m gay.”
James froze fractionally in the process of tugging his sweater over his head. Only a tuft of black hair was sticking out as he nodded, “Oh. Cool, mate.” Still, the sweater didn’t move but a finger pointed from one of the half-off sleeves, “Is that why Sirius is in your bed right now?”
James turned blindly in Peter’s direction, but the smile was evident on his face, “Ay, Pete, we live in a fucking love nest now—“
It was all Remus caught before Sirius had his wand out, swishing the curtains closed and whispering a silencing charm.
