After taking the season series vs. Las Vegas, the NY Liberty look like the new team to beat.
The regular season is winding down, and the playoff picture is all but complete. We all know anything is possible in the W, but right now it seems to be just a two-horse race for the WNBA championship. In one corner, you have the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces. In the other you have the #1 contender, the NY Liberty.
For most of the season, the defending champions had been squarely in the driverās seat. Rightfully so, seeing how they are clearly the most talented team in the W. But as of late, there has been a shift in power. The Aces may have the most wins ever in a single season (30 wins with 4 games left), but not far behind them are the NY Liberty with 28. With the Aces falling apart, this is the perfect time for the Libs to be on a 4-game winning streak. The most recent win coming last night against (guess who) The Las Vegas Aces. This win gives them a 3-2 record against arguably the most stacked roster in the history of basketball, womenās or menās.
Now as much as it may seem like a sure thing that weāll see these two teams in the finals, itās far from a forgone conclusion. There are still games to be played, and a lot can happen between now and the championship round. With that being said, if thereās a team you absolutely donāt want to play right now, itās Stew York City. Breanna Stewart is playing what could possibly be her best basketball right now, which would mean a lot since she is a living legend of the game. Stewie just turned 29 last night and is fighting for her 3rd championship, along with another (soon to be) legend in Sabrina Ionescu, who is looking for her first title. Letās just say the Aces have their work cut out for them.
