Obviously he had an aloofness when Grace was tackled and drugged, but thats his job. He'd probably think Grace is dead after a decade or so. (i think 28 years passed, right?) He'd probably be arrested along with Stratt (ignoring the movie), and wouldn't try to get out of it because he deserves it. Grace trusted him, and now he's probably dead in space. He'd spend the rest of his life replaying those moments over and over as he served his sentence (Carl would be about 50 or 60 at the end of the book, if hes alive).
