I need poetry book recs so bad 😔🙏🏻 I love online literature magazines and like online poetry sm but I have to physically hold a good poem in my hands atleast once a week or I start to go insane
If someone wants to get into philosophy where would you say they should start?? Like absolute beginner never read any philosophy books or anything which books would you say they should read first??
if you want an overview of philosophy in general, there’s tons of books out there that go over histories and summaries of concepts and such.
if you actually want to get into philosophy, i recommend just finding some books that interest you and just start reading. you’ll start to find a few things pretty quickly. a lot of philosophers aren’t as deep or intelligent as you thought they were, for example, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that books are old and we are young and we’ve learned so much over the millennia from people who cleared the way for us. many quotes, when taken out of context, often don’t do the ideas they’re trying to serve sufficient justice. one of the most interesting things you’ll find is how much philosophers from disparate schools of thought actually agree with each other.
i’d say lastly, if you like the idea of philosophy but don’t actually want to read philosophy, there are so many books out there that are philosophical without actually being ‘philosophy.’ they’re often easier to read, for one, and for two, instead of talking about philosophy as an abstract idea they’re often conversations about other things that bring philosophy into practical, real world approaches.
but i feel, i can’t just leave you hanging without throwing some titles your way, so here’s some good places to experiment.
seneca’s de ira is probably one of the better pieces of stoic writing. i recommend james romm’s translation. not only does seneca put stoic thought into a practical context, unlike many of the other stoic writers he actually takes time to build up and support his arguments instead of making statements and letting you try and figure out what’s what.
pema chodron’s ‘welcoming the unwelcome’ is about a lot of things, but in essence is a buddhist approach to embracing the peace and beauty and goodness in a world full of grief and frustration.
the conference of the birds is a long poem by farid ud-din attar. it’s mystical in its imagery, religious too, and even that’s not your thing it’s worth reading. in essence it is about embracing detachment from greed and lust and ego and all the illusory things of the world. i recommend sholeh wolpe’s translation, as it’s a more modern style, and therefore probably easier for most people to read.
on i could go, but i do not want to overwhelm you, so i’ll leave the hard philosophy there.
as for non philosophy books that are quite philosophical, i’ll suggest three more.
robin wall kimmerer’s braiding sweetgrass touches on all sorts of themes from the importance of family and community, to embracing and preserving traditions and knowledge, to the importance of living a curious and productive life. each chapter is a self contained story with a self contained theme, so it’s something that’s easy to pick up and put down at your own pace.
marc hamer’s how to catch a mole is about aging and acceptance and growth. it’s just a quite lovely book all around.
alexandra natapoff’s snitching isn’t about philosophy at all. it’s a book about criminal justice, but it’s also a great look at how the best of intentions, lack of insight, a lack of accountability, and negligence can all coalesce to create a disastrous system. the reason i include it is because it’s a great illustration of what can happen when we’re complacent, both as individuals as well as a group. philosophy is often about pushing back against complacency, to think about what is and what was and what can be and what is right or wrong and on and on and on. just because we read about philosophy and think about it and are curious about it, we can’t ever take it for granted. we have to always have to be guarded, to challenge ourselves as well as the ideas that are presented to us. this book is a practical exploration as to why that idea is so important.
i honestly want to throw more your way, but this got longer than i intended. so, i hope that this is slightly helpful and if it isn’t, i apologize.

Like ur telling me there's a creature that starts out as a little wriggly bug and then it encapsules itself in silk and its own skin THEN TURNS TO MUSH then forms into a beautiful, colourful creature???
