People ask me why Project Hail Mary is my favourite book. I typically give them the same answer, that I love the science and the characters. But this book means so much more to me. When I first read this book, I was not in a great place. My mental health wasn’t fantastic, I was burnt out, and recovering from a difficult year. My science teacher encouraged me to read the Martian, and ever since I’ve been hooked on Andy Weir books. I picked it up at the bookstore, flipped to the first page, and was immediately sucked into the world of Project Hail Mary. There was something about it, maybe the relationship between Grace and Rocky, or the dedication of humanity, or the morally conflicting Eva Stratt, but this book literally healed me. For once, I had a spark back in my life. Instead of the gray, there was something to look forward to. I’m not one to show emotion, but I cried at the end and cried when the trailer came out. So, when people tell you that books are “overrated” or “dead trees”, don’t listen to them. A book can bring you back to life, you just have to find the right one.
