Note: animal au of my oc's (technically part of a warrior cats au but this has nothing to do with the clans). Content warning for animal injury.
Ever since Manny had taken note of the feral cats that live in the woods behind their farm, they had been nervous to find out how their Doberman, Aamon would react to them. Introducing him to Jackson had already been a challenge when Aamon's first reaction was to bark and chase the cat around, nearly ripping the leash out from their hands. Honestly, they were terrified of him killing or even eating one of the ferals, he barely tolerated Jackson as is.
Luckily they had Aamon trained not to go past the treeline and now behaved enough to not attack Jackson if he found him outside the safety of the barn, especially after needing to share the house after the tick incident. The ferals also seemed smart enough to avoid the dog, never lingering for very long if he was outside and usually keeping to the woods or the barn. They were just relieved that most of them seemed to be friendly with Jackson so they didn't have to constantly worry about catfights breaking out. So after the first few months of getting used to the new land, they finally unlocked the dog door so Aamon could come and go as he wished as they left to go do errands, patting Aamon on the head as they left. Though Manny didn't exactly think anybody would actually try to trespass onto the property, let alone for anything nefarious considering how far out they lived now. Hopefully they could just… start new.
Aamon shook himself off once he was outside, trotting down the stairs to make a round on the property, sniffing at the ground for any new smells. Cats, too many damn cats, but as long as they kept to their territory then they had no problems on his territory. The barn cat was the exception, inside the barn was clearly his territory even though the barn was in Aamon's territory. It was fine, as long as he kept intruders out in the grand scheme of things, what The barn cat did in the barn was not his business.
There weren't that many humans around here, which made it easy to smell everything else. Humans were more worrisome than some feral felines anyways, humans hurt worse too, he knew. It was why they left the city… he missed the city, he wasn't a farm dog, but he'd do his job like in any other place.
When he finally rounded towards the side of the estate near the barn his hackles raised and he looked up to a stack of hay, of which the barn cat sat atop sunning himself, looking down at Aamon with narrowed eyes.
“Cat.” Aamon huffed.
“Dog.” He hissed back.
Aamon stared intently at Jackson, ears pinned back and tail straight. He growled, shaking himself off again. He did not need to chase the cat, the cat was “Family” as his master so often repeated to him despite the fact that he did not agree.
After pacing around the barn, smelling the same few cats that seemed to frequent the place, Aamon moved on towards other areas. The broken shed only smelled of rotting wood, though he did manage to snap up a mouse that hadn't noticed him quick enough to dart, which he crunched on even though he technically shouldn't be eating the rodents he finds. He inspected the bonfire circle, then sneezed when he got ash on his nose. After about an hour of this he finally gave in and went back inside to eat and lay down in his bed. It still didn't quite smell like home yet, too many things still smelled like the previous people and Manny was still unpacking things despite the months of being here. They didn't smell quite right either, too sad, they paced like he did. Had made too many Phone calls he couldn't quite grasp but seemed to always end in them crying. Looking at photos of his girl. The girl who was no longer here.
His eyes drifted shut as his mind wandered and his muscles relaxed into the bed.
The door opened and his ears perked up, the familiar smell passing by and petting him on the head before moving onto elsewhere in the house. He drifted off back to sleep soon after.
…
A scream tore through the air startled Aamon out of his deep sleep. His ears shot up and his nails clicked against the wood as he stood up and looked around. The windows were dark, it was properly night.
Another yowl, Aamon finally recognized the sound of a cat. This is why he hates feral cats, always up to no good in the dark… wait no, he recognized this cat. It was Jackson, and he sounded less than pleased. He hadn't heard Jackson make this sort of sound before.
Aamon ran to the dog door just as Manny walked out of their bedroom, yelling something Aamon hadn't caught. He swiveled his ears and landed that the issue was within the barn and he took off running towards the commotion. Noting a new smell in the air, the smell of city and human.
with a loud bark, Aamon burst in through the barn to find a man being harassed by Jackson among the hay bales. The man… wait no He knew this man too. Trying to kick the relentless cat off him, Aamon froze in the doorway. This human always smelled vaguely wrong, like a smell trying to be covered with a different stronger smell, it always put him off.
Now the man, Kayne, smelled like blood (his own, drawn from Jackson’s claws), car Leakage, the smoke of the city, and a very distinct iron smell. One he recognized but couldn't put a pin on.
He growled, creeping up towards the man. “YOU! You aren't supposed to be in here!” He barked at Kayne, who glared at him with disdain as he gave Jackson a particularly harsh kick which seemed to finally get Jackson to back off with a wounded yell.
“Well shit.” Kayne muttered.
Aamon could hear the door to the house open as Manny called out “Aamon? Where’d you go, what's going on! Did a cat fight break out?” They didn't seem to have caught on that it was Jackson or that there was a man in the barn. A man that Aamon could not let get any closer to his human. Not without good reason .
Kanye's eyes flicked to the sound of Manny, Aamon kept his eyes trained on Kayne. “C'mooon, nice doggy! You know me, I'm just making a little surprise visit for my dear ol’ brother.” Kayne cooed at Aamon, holding a hand out. Aamon couldn't make out many details in the dark of the barn where the faint light of the moon didn't illuminate. The man's voice was gentle, he had been a friend once upon a time, right? Aamon considered Kayne as he creeped toward the hand, ears pinned back, maybe Jackson was wrong to attack Kayne, a misunderstanding? He did not trust the cat to make any sort of decision when it came to people, barely better than the strays in the woods he called friends.
His eyes flicked to the side, noticing Jackson's silhouette crouched mostly concealed in the dark looking at Aamon with wide blown pupils that reflected back at him. He never trusted cats, look at him! Cowering. What help was he?
Jackson’s tail flicked, looking at Kayne's back before whispering in a quiet growl “He’s holding a gun behind his back.”
The barn door opened with a creak, Manny stepping in. “Aamon? What's got you all so riled up?”
Aamon decided that he trusted the cat.
Everything moved at once. Kayne shot forward with his hidden hand pulling out the gun, Jackson darted out of sight as Aamon jumped onto Kayne, snapping his jaws around his shoulder, Manny running forward as he caught sight of a man being tackled by his dog. Kayne screamed, he wasn't wearing many layers so Aamon’s teeth sunk in easily. Something hard in Kanye's hand hit the side of Aamon’s head and he let go after the third collision, whimpering. Kayne scrambled to his feet and Manny froze when they recognized their brother’s face in the moonlight.
Aamon couldn't hear what Kayne had said as he raised the gun up towards Manny, the loud rush of blood in Aamon's ears garbled any speech as he saw the finger wrap around the trigger. He whipped around and with his full weight rammed into Kayne. The gun went off, his ears were ringing too loudly to figure out if the screaming came from Kayne or Manny. Blindly he snapped his jaws, clamping down onto an arm and tugging them both down again.
his eyes met with the bottom of the gun barrel.
The pain that raked across his face was excruciating, he couldn't hear anything with the blast sending his ears ringing. All he could smell was gunpowder and lead, feeling the vague sensations of his body collapsing to the ground heavily and he was kicked in the thigh. Blurry things were still moving around him, it was too dark to even tell who was who.
Something like sandpaper licked his nose and he flinched, ears flicking back with a whimper. Another lick and he managed to lift his head up enough for Jackson to rub against his cheek. He was being urged in a direction, he couldn't see and he collapsed after a weak step. Another loud shot rang out which made his sensitive ears hurt. Warm blood dripped down his face, blinding him even more than the dark surrounding them. He couldn't even tell what happened to Manny, were they okay?
Jackson meowed something at him before he gave up and let his eyes close, consciousness slipping from him despite the racing of his heart.
