I'm trying not to write too much on this but I'm becoming concerned that the backlash to the backlash is over-correcting what the definition of a yandere is.
Here is your yandere recipe from someone who has been reading yandere for over 20 years:
Love (romantic, platonic, familial, whatever)
Horror
A decent portion of the horror must stem from the 'in love' character being a character
A yandere is someone who has become lovesick over someone else and now it's everyone's problem. That's it.
If you don't have love, no yandere. If you don't have horror, no yandere. If they aren't making them being in love someone else's problem, no yandere.
As someone who writes soft yandere, yes, thank you. It means the yandere isn't breaking darling's legs, it doesn't mean they're harmless uwu.
I am once again going to emphasize a previous point that I think lack of creativity is a major problem in understanding the yandere genre. People are out here thinking of horror as one extremely specific thing. Horror contains layers. It contains anxiety. It is often erotic and comedic, not in spite of but because of the dread it evokes. And all of that can be the horror brought into yandere.

People often like yandere because: "I don't know how to accept love so it must be forced onto me and I need it to not be my fault" and "Roleplaying as helpless is cathartic sometimes".
Look I think a lot of people get really caught up on the harm thing because they can only imagine harm as one specific action. It doesn't have to be that. Harm can be many creative things. Harm can be antagonism. It can be manipulation. It can be pathetic, even. Harm is always going to be relative to the terms set in a story, but you. You need conflict.
And, well, I think a lot of other people get caught up because they can only imagine the darling as the passive recipient of said harm. Darlings can have power and agency too. They don't have to just react, they can fight back. And sometimes, they can even win. It all depends on the story you want to tell.
