if john winchester and uther pendragon have no haters i am dead
So my penny for this:
Uther on some level I understand. He let his anger and grief lash out, committed a genocide to avenge his wife's death and after that it was too late to turn back. He was a king and as a sovereign, his decisions affected the whole kingdom. But if he was such a bad king, he would've faced a dethronement before the series even began. I believe he was a good king as long as magic didn't get involved โ then he became blinded by old hatred and fear. That's why he installed those beliefs to Arthur, so he could avoid being tricked by a sorcerer like he believed he was (we don't know for certain, but that's how he saw it).
He believed he was preparing Arthur to be a king who would protect the kingdom with the same iron fist he used. He was often cold and put too much pressure on Arthur, but he was Uther's sole heir, all of Camelot's future and the Pendragon bloodline depended on him. So to me, Uther was a much more complex character than many might believe amd while I still hate him, there are many points where his actions made me think and analyze the thoughts behind them.
Now, John Winchester can rot in hell for all eternity because he didn't have the same excuse. He also lost his wife and went on a crusade to avenge her โ but there was absolutely no need to traumatise and abuse his sons (especially Dean) the way he did. He represented toxic masculinity at its worst. There literally could've been a thousand different ways for him to handle the situation and he chose the worst.
Uther had to handle his grief during a time where people were being stoned to death on an average Tuesday afternoon. John had to handle his during โmodern timesโ when we like to believe we have passed these barbaric ways.
