Don't get me wrong, I used to be such a great fan of Vampire Knight when I was a teenager (also happened to be team Kaname upsss) my problem with the story is that no one cared for the girls. Yuki is a tool and a concept, not a real person (it's a similar story to phantom of the opera really). Women don't have desires or independent opinions, they aren't allowed to make mistakes, and when they do they are hated by other women.

The plot is fundamentally based on classism, it does not approach at any moment the fact that there are people suffering from the ones at the top of the hierarchy, and when it does, the "solution" they offer sucks. I obviously don't know anything about vampirism in the Japan culture, but I always thought it was such a waste to use anything as interesting as the figure of the outsider/monster to embody dominance and power and do not approach it from the perspective of the "fear of the unknown".

I do really think Yuki as human at first and then when turns into a pureblood vampire could have had lots of queer, sex and identity discovering themes, like how she was supposed to act as a model role and once she's put out of the standards of society she finds unlimited possibilities to express her love and desires until she faces the new reality of being a powerful vampire, with a new, and more dark, society who also has expectations of her, and then, she miserably fails at fulfilling them, but she just doesn't care anymore, because she's allowed to make mistakes and learn from them.

Personally, I always thought the problem with the male leads was that they were created in a time when the "hegemonic masculinity" wasn't questioned, so we just picked one or another based on our preferences, nowadays tho, the lack of consent, the being manipulative and stuff should def change cause in no way we should keep selling that as "healthy romantic love". All things said tho, we LOVE toxic vampires, but they could be toxic in a way that's not rooted in misogyny you know.

And this is just my preference, so do not read these two paragraphs if you're team Zero or couldn't stand Kaname... I read a beautiful fic once (written in my mother tongue so it's no available in English) which basically bettered Kaname's personality, keeping his essence but making him more approachable and with more characters standing up to him when he's in the wrong, so he finally learns how to communicate and trust his friends (Yuki in this fic never lets him get away with a thing so yeah, go girl!!!).

Based on this I always thought the real problem of those two was that they were imbalanced, and I am not thinking in terms of age but in terms of experience and power dynamics. We had to agree to the romance but the plot never actually explains it, neither the narrative helps to portray that they really are perfect for each other because they never were, and that's basically because Yuki never had a personality of her own (also we have to stop considering love as this great "it was destined thing"). We should have seen her make mistakes, like really big and hurtful mistakes, to the point she confronts Kaname when he still chooses her and keeps justifying her actions. And that should have happened in a timeline of decades. And once they both get to have other meaningful relationships (they could be platonic or queer-platonic I don't mind), then they learn that the thing never was about "destined and compromised since they were born", but actively choosing each other and being capable of saying when they are in the wrong.

And least but not last, all the mother fucking vampires should have been queer. I do not care how, but do not dare coming to my town expecting straight vampires, all of them at least should be bisexual and half of them trans. Thank you very much.
