What You Will Need:

Art Program that has Blending Modes and Layers that also allows you to assign a blending mode to your actual brush.

A super basic, fundamental understanding of what Blending Modes are and how to add them to your layers and your brush.

A painting you’ve made where the character is on it’s own separate layer from the background.

Remember earlier this week when my internet went out? I passed the time by making this thing no one asked for. 

Oh a good question!! I don’t really think about itmuch actually…  but I can try to show my steps in more detail…!Maybe you can try it out for yourself! I only use Paint Tool SAI2 while doing so. (But it is almost like Photoshop, just more simple)Maybe my english and knowledge is not very good for explaining so I am sorry inadvance… (つ▽⊂|| ) and many typos…

First I draw a simple sketch… I use the resolutionof 2432 x 1367 pixels

then I do outlines, maybe you like to see the brushsettings for this:

Since my pencil makes fuzzy outlines, I have to outlineit on a separate layer again, but I use a fancy, gaudy color for thatso I don’t miss!

I use clipping group on top of that layer to cover itwith the actual colors later.

for the sense of the right hue, you may look for thecolors of the old animations, mostly, the darkest color (left) willhave a very dark gray warm color and the brightest color (right) willhave a very bright gray cold color, such colors are still to see indigital colored anime intentionally. Just try to keep the colors verygrayish mostly!

For the shading I like to use blue/green and graycolors… but it is very intuitive and I often just experiment.

( I don’t go too much on detail how to color thebackground since it is basically the same, like with the moving object infront, only difference is, that you don’t do a hard shading, you cansmooth it out with blending and paint it, there is a little bit morespace for artistic freedom in general. Also if you have a darker theme it is good to use the darkest color possible for black shadinglike here)  

blur is very important and I think it’s what itmakes looking old school, since back in the 80s and 90s they oftenused transparentsheet in the cel animation technique (characters are drawn on cel andlaid over a static background drawing *wiki*),that would cast such shadows and make the colors a little blurry onthe film a little. 

So the figure in front would have to gain suchan effect. I copy the layer for color and blur it and give it themode for color too!Also very bright colors would strongly blur soI make another copy of the color layer and just blur it highly and change the mode to screen tofade the contrast against its strong dark background.

At the end, I would just adjust the outlinecolors a little bit to be less apparent if the contrast is too strongon bright spaces (using a clipping group on the outline layer andmake the hue mid-red-grayish)On a final note a slight blur to everything!

sketch, then do a cleaner sketch, THEN start finalizing

THUMBNAILS

color research, picking a set palette or light/dark for each work

you like that pose? redo it one more time

USE A DAMN REFERENCE

do not rely on stylization as an excuse for anatomy

draw the goddamn background you coward

just draw the hand- a bad hand is better than a hidden hand

the rule of thirds WORKS

take a considerable break between sketch and lines/paint

know that art takes longer as you get better at it

draw the seams on clothes

stop aiming for accuracy and focus on fluidity and motion, accuracy will come with practice of those two concepts

just…do the chiaroscuro. just DO IT. no excuses it always works

stop making excuses, make yourself an art schedule/set weekly(or daily) art goals and just DO IT.

Not sure how many of you guys out there are big Adam Ruins Everything fans but I love it. Was watching the episode “Adam Ruins Art” and this bit just hit me like a ton of bricks.

For 2018, I want to do the 365 day challenge.  Wich mean : Drawing something each day. ( Even only a sketch, etc. )  And so it a search to evolve in their art all over the year.

SO, why a call for the artists? 

Well, I want to ask if there artists here who would like to do the challenge with me, I need motivation and so if other artist do it along side with me, I will be able to not drop it… like I did for some other challenges * Cough inktober COUGH Huevember * 

I will create a Discord, for anyone who want to join, send me a message here and I will invite you in the discord! 

Each week, there will be a “main” subject I will suggest if you need inspiration to draw.  ( By exemple one week could be to draw thing related to tree, so you can do during the week tree concept art, tree analysis, tree painting, etc etc etc. )  

Because the last post seemed confusing (No one complained but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to clarify) I wanted to redo the Face tutorial from a while ago. I’m gonna post the pictures in the text to make sure the step by step stuff is easy to understand. This tutorial is meant for checking your art AFTER you’ve drawn it. A step by step on pointing out mistakes in proportions, expression and angles.
