rhodey loves tony.  rhodey gets on with tony so freaking well.  rhodey loves everything about tony.  he wants tony happy and safe and that’s only ever why rhodey is mad at tony. because tony is self destructive. don’t be like that tony, it makes rhodey sad

Like just imagine Tony this too smart, too fast kid who is being crushed under the expectations that came with being who he is meeting James Rhodes who knows who he is. And Tony thinks that means what it always means when someone knows he’s Tony Stark, son of Howard Stark, and it’s not what happens at all. Rhodey is a guy who is a military dream, a soldier through and through in the way Tony heard about growing up like Captain freaking America was. James Rhodes gives a damn about his country and wants to see it improve. James Rhodes who cares about his fellow man but is lying to himself about how screwed up people can treat each other. James Rhodes who was raised right and acts like it, who treats Tony like a kid he is. Rhodey who is the first person beside Jarvis who has ever looked at Tony and seen Tony not all the other stuff. Rhodey who doesn’t tell him he needs to act older, be more mature, act like a Stark. Rhodey who encourages Tony to do stupid, silly things for fun. Rhodey who tells Tony to build things because damn kid it makes you happy, do it already. Just imagine Tony who worried about not being able to give back to Rhodey who is so great to him. Just imagine Tony being super glib to anyone even remotely with military influence who ever so much as coughs in Rhodey direction because no, he’s great. Tony who definitely had a massive case of puppy love on Rhodey, I don’t care what you say he’s young and attention starved and Rhodey is amazing. Rhodey who doesn’t give into that and tells Tony they’re friends he doesn’t want anything, including Tony to think he needs to offer him things like sex to keep him around. Rhodey who invites Tony to come home with time for holidays because he knows Tony doesn’t want to go back to the mansion. Tony who meets Mrs. Rhodes and hears about Rhodey’s dad and thinks maybe for awhile being a Stark won’t be all bad if he can help guys like Rhodey. Especially if he can do anything to keep Rhodey safe like better body armor or armored vehicles. Tony who gets scared when he finally understands Rhodey is going to go into combat one day. Rhodey who is there after his parents funeral and lets him cry until he can’t cry anymore. Rhodey who hands him a phone a few days after his parents are buried with Mrs. Rhodes on the line to demands to know how Tony is doing from Tony himself. Tony who is grieving, upset, conflicted but more thankful than he can honestly tell these people in his life who matter. Rhodey who does end up in combat and worries the hell out of Tony. Tony who calls to check on him, keeps tabs on him through less than morally legal means. Tony who sends all kinds of care packages to Rhodey and letters with flowery nicknames and hearts to make his bff laugh. Rhodey who comes back and isn’t always as put together as he’d have people believe who goes to Tony who won’t treat him like he isn’t together. Tony who keeps an eye on Rhodey and makes him go to Malibu where there is the ocean right there, so different from Afghanistan. Tony who will stay up watching awful 80′s movie marathons when Rhodey can’t sleep. Tony who will drag Rhodey into his workshop when he needs to do something, because Tony does not forget they both went to MIT, they both build. They work on the cars together. They make nonsense. Tony asks Rhodey about any ideas he has on his current R&D projects because he values his opinion. Tony and Rhodey who will claw their way through hell to get to each other and make shitty jokes until they both are actually laughing.
