Okay so a lot of it comes down to the dom/sub aspect of it. In Dog Dean Afternoon we watch Dean grow more connected to the Colonel throughout the episode and start displaying dog-like behaviors the same as the Colonel, such as barking at the mailman and playing fetch. but Dean also loosens up, to some extent, at the same time. The weight of being in charge /having the most responsibility is placed on Sam. Even with his occasional obtuse moments in the episode, Dean trusts Sam to take the lead but also to listen to him, to pay attention.

It’s about Dean relinquishing control and allowing (trusting) Sam to take care of everything (him). It’s about Dean letting himself be vulnerable in a way he rarely does, and not fighting it. It’s also about Sam feeling important and trusted enough to do all that for Dean, something he often struggles with.

And on a lighter note dogs are very touchy and typically there is a lot of physical affection between a puppy and his owner. Dean knows Sam loves dogs, and we see how affectionate he is with them.. see where i’m going with this? It’s just too perfect for them
