Folks, it finally happened. My first toon printed in the magazine. It’s been a long and winding journey. I submitted my first cartoon in August, 2017. If you saw that Patreon video, you know it was a really difficult time in my life, and that’s an understatement. I started submitting ten cartoons a month, and the first three months were also the last three months of my terminally ill brother’s life. Ian and I always shared a bond of silliness, and making the cartoons gave me something to cling to in the aftermath of his death. Homemade sunshine in the dark place called grief. I honestly hadn’t planned to make a post about that part of this journey when I sat down to celebrate the publication on social media, but here we are. So, that’s how the cartoons started. Out of sadness and loss and, I think, spiritual survival. I kept making them and submitting them, even when it felt like a pipe dream—it was also a way to honor Ian, someone who never gave up. Well, In September 2019, I got an email from the cartoon editor, @emmaewallen , inviting me to submit weekly. So I started submitting eight cartoons a week. I sold my first cartoon in March of 2020, and a handful more since then. It’s truly crazy to see it in print. I wish Ian could see it. I’m so full of gratitude to so many people for the support over the years. Too many people to name. It’s been a hard road—not the cartooning, just life I mean.
