my winter essentials
This corner of town is strange - nearly abandoned and as run-down as the worst ghettos of Philly, but with a strange tang to the air, reminiscent of mortal terror, with a tang of unfamiliar spice.
She walks into the area with Auspex active, touching her hand to the wall of a building as she sniffs the air. Phaedra is short, blonde, and a little bit of a mess, her hair tied out of her face with a twist tie from the produce section of a grocery store, wearing a black dress with colorful embroidery and sandals, large blue eyes staring as if she might see into Twilight.
She canât currently, but with time and the tools for the right Cruac ritual, she could.
âThere was a star that fell here, and itâs still burning. Itâs in a hole, or maybe a cave, but the fire will spread. One, two, many. By its light, all will be revealed.â
She closes her eyes as she speaks, her voice low and soft, almost a hypnotic cadence. Which might be why she closes her eyes, to show she is not trying to mesmerize him.
When she reopens her eyes, Williamâs are half-closed in thought. âHow often do your dreams of this nature prove prophetic? And to what degree of... we shall call it abstraction?â

âI see. So Iâm trespassing in something more dangerous than I might be able to handle, here.â She echoes the nod, letting out a purely theatrical sigh. âI apologize for the trouble to yourself.â
William thaws slightly as it becomes clear that sheâs not going to fight him on this.  âI do not hold your curiosity against you. I know the draw of hidden knowledge.â Â
âIt is the knowledge that drew me in, not the potential power. Iâm not a member of the Ordo, seeking a Wyrmâs Nest to settle on. JustâŚjust. Um, is there a place thatâs better or safer, to talk?â She looks around the area, the fear effects finally sinking in more properly.
A wry curve touches the corner of his mouth. âSafer? Perhaps, while I am with you. Come with me.â He leads her out of Grimmick proper, around to the front door of the bookstore. The door opens without a key, and they step into the cool, dust-scented dimness of the shop. A light flicks on over the overstuffed chairs, and William gestures in that direction. âI would offer tea, butâŚ.â
âIf you have a mint tea, I still really like the scent and the warmth. Unless that seems like a waste to you.â She settles herself into one of the chairs, looking a little like a creepy porcelain doll, dwarfed by the overstuffedness.
William nods. âOne moment.â He steps out of sight, and is back in a few seconds at most with a steaming tea pot. âHere we are.â
She blinks, startled by how little time that took, and then delighted. âEither I dazed for longer than I thought, or that wasâŚreally quick.â
William gives a small smile. âWhich do you suspect?â He sets down the tray, then holds up a hand. âBefore you enjoy, I must require that this meeting will be bound by the rules of hospitality. I will do no knowing and willing harm to you nor yours for the next 24 hours save in self defense, nor tell you anything knowingly false, but I must require that you agree to the same terms - and the promise to do so will be magically enforced, with ill-fortune to plague the oathbreaker. Do you agree to this?â
She seems to think over the implications of the oath before nodding slightly. âI agree to your terms, Iâd rather you not harm me after that time is up. How much do I need to prove Iâm not a danger to you or yours to ensure that?â
William gives a small smile. âI would not say that itâs a matter of proving, as such. I have a great deal of experience in discerning an actual threat from a potential one. Though if you expect to be taking actions which might make you appear threatening, advanced warning might ease tensions.â
âNoted.â She settles into the chair further. âIâm not sure if I currently expect to? I donât know what I expect here, yet.â
William tilts his head.  âIf I might ask, why have you come to this city? I understand that travel is difficult for your kind.â
âIâve had dreams pushing me here. Thereâs something to learn here. I donât know what, or how long Iâll be staying. ItâsâŚyes, unfamiliar, and the Cacophony, locally, is very still and quiet. Itâs as though all the other vampires in town are holding their breath.â
William nods. âThere are relatively few of your kind here. The local culture among both the supernatural Community and mortal society are...â. He hesitates, as though seeking diplomatic phrasing. â...Inimical to the kinds of excesses to which some of your people are predisposed. The relatively active community of Hunters is also something of a deterrent.â
He tilts his head. âBut you were drawn here by dreams? That is interesting. I am something of a scholar on the subject of oneiromancy. Can you provide more detail on these dreams?â

William wasnât expecting to see a young woman wandering Grimmick carelessly. He tilts his head and follows her at a distance, watching to see what she does and where she goes. Best not to let someone kill herself needlessly.
The woman (inhuman as she might be), seems to be completely unaware of the danger, while somehow being drawn into the mystery, stepping deeper into the neighborhood as if seeking out its beating heart.
Rather than heedlessly stalking the woman, which would go badly, William makes his way through the streets to come up in front of her. He steps out of an alley when he hears the footsteps. âYou shouldnât be here,â he says in his best imposing tone.
She blinks, seeming to realize that sheâs in physical reality as well. âProbably not, no, but I am and here is. Hello, what is this place? It feelsâŚmh. It is a place of power, yes?â
William frowns.  âPower? No. This is a place of danger. There is no power here for you.â
She frowns faintly. âI understood that. Itâs not âfor meâ, yes, no. But it is powerful. Like a rip tide.â A hand ripples in the air, trying to express the ebb and flow she feels.
Williamâs grown deepens further and he peers at the woman. âWho are you? Are you new to our Community?â
âCommunity?â The way she repeats the word makes it clear sheâs definitely not a local. âMy name is Phaedra. Phaedra Lamb. IâŚhm, how formal an introduction does this occasion merit?â
Williamâs answer is his best âyouâve been found cheatingâ teacherâs Look. âIn the circumstances, I recommend candor, if not complete formality.â
She draws herself up to her full height of 5â˛2âł. âPhaedra Lamb, Haruspex and Maiden of the Circle of the Crone, member of clan Mekhet and the Rodriguez family of Philadelphia.â
Thereâs a few interesting pieces to dig out of there. Haruspex means sheâs a seer or a sibyl of some kind. Maiden is a title given to a female member of the Circle, regardless of status, who has never taken the life of a person. The âfamilyâ system of Philadelphia is unique to the political landscape there; itâs possible that the name Miguel Rodriguez has come up at some point in the past, in Williamâs reading.
William nods slowly.  âWell. Haruspex Lamb, I am Lord William Book of Echoes, Regent of the Autumn Court of Changelings, Lord Scriviner to our Freehold. I watch over this place. It is dangerous, as are its secrets, and it is my to protect the unwary from its dangers - and to protect it from those who might not approach it with the respect it warrants.â Â
