Lucia sees a small fox and decides to follow it.

"come back little foxy!"

She follows it for a long while, though loses it when she hears the rustling of leaves. Turning towards it, she realizes she's much more lost than before.

"hello? Hello?! Whose there?"

William steps through bushes, his torch lighting the way. He pauses when he hears footsteps and turns the torch off. He listens for a voice and turns the torch back on.

Lucia?

He walks in the direction he heard the voice in— and when he emerges. William has multiple leafs either in his hair or stuck to him. One arm is wrapped around his stomach and holds Lucia’s locket. The other hand, obviously he’s using for his torch.

When he walks through the bushes, he's met with the sight of a terrified Lucia pointing a flare gun at his feet. She's carrying multiple critters, on one shoulder 5 rolly pollies and 3 beetles, on the other, a larger than normal snail. On her head is a small bunny and in the arm not holding the flare gun she cradles another rabbit, this one much larger. She looks worn out, like she had just run a marathon.

Upon registering who it is, she lowers the flare gun to her side, lighting up slightly.

"o-oh! It's just you! Sorry, I thought you were something else!"

She notices his arm around his stomach and leans forward slightly, staring at him with curiosity and worry

"are you okay? My my, if you're ill you shouldn't be out here!"

William raises his arms above his head in a defensive manner from the flare gun. He’s heard the dangers from Amber… He shudders at the sight of the bugs around her, at least they aren’t coming out of her. He steps back. What the hell happened, did she become Snow White whilst he was gone!?

William brings his arms back down, the other clutching his stomach and he groans. It’s okay Lucia. Im really scary… ahhhh… he says, his tone completely flat.

Are you okay? You’ve been out for ages— I told you not to come into the woods you could get lost or hurt— and you dropped this… He holds out the locker. and we need to find Caligo…

he ignores the questions Lucia asks about him. He wasn’t the worry right now, it’s not like he was gonna throw up again. Even though he felt like it… it was definitely just the rising panic of it, he’s sure they are all out of his system now. But that doesn’t stop him from looking unwell.

She begins to let all of the creatures she's holding off, one by one until she is no longer covered in forest critters.

"I'm okay! I made a bunch of new friends"

She sees her locket in his hand and smiles, gently taking it from him and placing it back around her neck, although she struggles with getting the clasp closed

"you found it! Thank you so much! Caligo and I were together a little while ago, but we got ambushed by something and ran in different directions... I hope she's okay..."

She points at him

"are you okay though? You didn't exactly give me an answer!"

Yeah— a bunch. A lot of bugs— I hate bugs. He can still taste them… he shudders.

You’re wel— you got ambushed!? B-by what? Do you know??? Is she safe?? Are you safe? He walks over, checking Lucia for injuries.

"only the beetles are bugs... But I understand the sentiment."

She tucks her flare gun into the ribbon around her waist and smiles

"I don't know what it was, I didn't see it, but I'm fine! Never ran so fast before though. And are you sure you're doing well? You look like you're about to keel over dead"

Her face falls a little

"I don't know if Cali's okay. I can only hope... She's never been a big fan of the dark..."

There still was a lot of critters I wasn’t expecting to see at… midnight, 1 am ish..

Oh. Well— as long as you’re okay that’s fine. Let’s find Caligo first.

I feel like it. I don’t want to scare you, I already… scared Caligo with my.. “illness”. I-it was bad. She would’ve found you sooner if I… didn’t try and help.

Yeah.. I know. It’s funny cuz her name means dark

"sorry, they just looked so lonely and I was lonely and so I let them tag along!"

Lucia looks around and begins to walk in a seemingly random direction

"I'm sure she's okay!! Shes brave... And strong! Much stronger than I am. And she always takes such good care of her scroll while she's out and about! So long as that stays intact she'll be good!"

She stops walking and wanders back up to him, reaching up to feel his forehead with the back of her hand, though she can't tell the temperature

"now, I don't know what happened, but I think trying to help and failing is a lot better than leaving it be and watching the world burn"

She nods

"Even monsters like us have our fears. I like the dark, it's warm, reminds me of better times. Now, if the worst comes to pass, I can always fire off a flare. I'm just worried about alerting other things to our location"

Right… You really just don’t care about — yeah no that’s fair. You’re a lively kid anyway.

Do you even know where you are go— oh. About the scroll I… accidentally tore a little bit off it.. I- I couldn’t see in my Defense!

He pauses. What was that for? Did he really look the sickly? He felt it, that’s for sure.

Hmm.

I don’t— don’t lit a flare near me… There’s some—thing in the woods after me and- and if it catches me it will kill me.

She looks a little confused

"oh... You... Okay... Well, nothing a little tape can't fix! At least until we can visit souls rest. So long as it wasn't a big tear I'm sure she'll be fine. She looked fine before we got separated! Also if you couldn't see that's concerning"

She nods a little, thinking

"I have a vague idea. I ran one direction, she ran the other, so she must be back near where we were before. Though I guess I got pretty turned around... I don't know where we are... Where did you find the locket? That'll be a good start!"

All of a sudden, she hands him the flare gun

"that way, you know I won't try to get us murdered! You seemed pretty scared of me earlier when I fixed that doll for you, so"

Sorry I’m a little— out of it right now.

Okay. Yeah— I thought I was going to murder her on accident by tearing it— she sounded mad for a moment..

I don’t understand why you guys keep softening up around me its— cough weird.

Uh.. I found the locket down over there. He points behind him. I— the chain was broken so I used one of my necklace chains.

Oh. I… … Am I really that obvious?

Lucia looks where he points and begins wandering in that direction.

"I don't think anger is a very productive emotion... Imagine how bad a messenger I would be if I was constantly worrying about things like grudges, anger and even sadness. No use worrying about what's already done! As for Caligo, she's not as evil as you think, she's just a little odd. But aren't we all!"

As she walks she nods

"you were shaking like you just saw what was beyond the end of the observable universe and didn't like it"

"but, think of her scroll as a part of her, it's strong but it's also delicate at the same time. It's had small tears before, but paper is fixable"

Mmm. Thats a good way to… think, I reckon. It must be tiring sometimes though right? You must’ve been furious at me when.,, you know. He rubbed his arm. Coughing again.

Ah. A lot of mean people were trying to tell me that you were gonna kill me soon… I believed them since I was extremely stressed and vulnerable.,.

"tiring? Why would something like that be tiring? All I'm doing is making myself forget those negative unproductive emotions! And yeah, I was angry then, and I still find it a little hard to trust you, but I mean, that's such an unproductive thing. Messengers shouldn't hold grudges. I'm just meant to deliver things!"

She frowns slightly as he tells her about the comments

"I'm not really into murder like some of my siblings are. It saddens me, really"

When he asks about the "tattoo, her hand instinctively moves up to the back of her neck, scratching at it slightly before lowering her arm

"ah, yes, she does! It's not a tattoo, it's a scar, it signifies the pact we have with each other. Almost like the signing of a contract. Hers is on her left shoulder"

She stops moving and stares deeper into the forest, almost blankly, then she glances back at William, then back into the forest

"do you want to take a break? You're coughing quite a bit there"

Oh…I see, I figured it did but— cuz Caligos hair is shorter it— you get what I mean??

William stared at Lucia. He walked over and helped her sit down, sitting across from hers.

Okay. Break works fine for me.

William kept mentally examining Lucia. hmm.

She nods slightly

"yeah, that's why it's on her shoulder, she always preferred her hair shorter and-"

As he helps her sit down, her eyes widen a little and she blinks a few times, then pouts

"hey! I should be the one helping you sit down! Not the other way around! You're the one who sounds like he's trying to hack up a lung!!"

She huffs a little, crossing her arms, then, when something comes to mind, she slowly uncrosses them

"question... And please answer this honestly. Which do you think is scarier, eternal change, or eternal repetition? And if given the chance to free someone from one and bring them to the other, would you take it?"

Nothing Lucia, don’t worry about it, it wasn’t important just my brain assuming things.

He smiled a little at her response back. He mumbles something under his breath. Making it purposefully extra illegible so that Lucia doesn’t understand what he said.

… eternal change?. Hmm..

Depends who. I’m a hero I’m just a teenager in a messed up town, not everyone gets out alive.

She nods and then blinks a few more times, though when she realizes her eyes won't focus she leans back and instead stares at the sky.

"odd... Most people find the idea of eternal repetition terrifying. The idea of watching the world around you change while forced to relive the same period of time over and over again. It's a horrible thing. Something I wish upon no one"

"though, I guess you're right, not everyone will survive. Death is inevitable"

Lucia you can… rest by here; you look… sick still. Is it the uh— worms?? Caligo gave me water, you can have it..

I think change is much rather… darker. You’ll get used to the repetition, or you won’t. You’ll either try to escape or succumb to it.

She sits back up, holding her hand up when he tries to give her the water

"I'm fine, I'm fine. Really, you should keep it"

She rubs her eyes and forces herself back to her feet, holding her hand out for William to take

"we should continue looking. I'm starting to get worried and it's only getting darker"

She thinks on his words

"you know, you can't always escape it... When you no longer have control over your body. Like watching a tv show, just, over and over and over again. Watching the same year play out, forced to do the same actions over and over again like you're watching yourself while the world around you, the one you once knew, continues to crumble. A prisoner in your own body... It's enough to drive anyone mad... I don't know... I guess I got lucky..."

William hums to himself. Giving up on asking… she seemed fine, fine enough at least. He stands up, not grabbing onto Lucia’s hand in the case that she was lying.

Yeah. Okay. I— let’s find Caligo quickly.

William stared at the ground. Biting his knuckles as he thinks about what Lucia said.

She nods and walks with him, though as they are walking something catches her eye and she turns in that direction. Nothing. But she does change her walk to be a little more defensive

"Maybe some repetition can be good, nice even, but not forced repetition. And not for such a long time... I remember one day in that cycle in particular... You know, birthdays are meant to be happy. But there was no celebration, no gifts, no cake, hell I didn't even eat that day. I woke up, like I would any other day. But instead of going about my daily routine, I left before breakfast and spent the day sitting at Caligo's grave...."

She suddenly perks up a little, chuckling with a smile

"sorry, I'm being a little bit of a Debbie downer! You probably don't want to hear about that kind of stuff! It's so boring and honestly I'd do better just to forget about it!"

As they continue walking she hums a little, ring around the Rosie

William stares at his hands afterwards, he messed around with his rings and watches Lucia’s stance change. His eyes narrow with curiosity.

I think repeating something over and over seriously messes with people’s heads. Like with morning routines it’s— it’s a bit different because it’s willing. And it’s not malicious… are repeats considered malicious? I don’t know, my undertale knowledge is something in about each Reset.

Lucia, I don’t care if you’re a Debbie Downer. You can grieve people, that’s fine. I— assume this was before she became the scroll that is.

As he talks about the origin of the song she nods a couple times

"yeah, yeah. The bubonic plague. Lost a few good friends to that one. Did you know the pocket full of posies refers to the little pouches of flowers that people would carry around? They believed it to ward off miasmas"

Aw. That had to have been horrible… He rubbed his arm, looking down into the forest. He sighed… this place was basically endless!

At his shock she turns to him with a "really?" Look on her face

"different worlds, remember? In my universe, earth is the only current planet to be known to hold humanoid life. IM SORRY. WAIT. IM WEARING A TOGA. MY FIRST LANGUAGE IS LATIN AND AT NO POINT DID YOU STOP AND THINK 'huh, maybe she's from Rome!'?!"

She brings her hands up to her face and drags her hands down her face, before pinching the bridge of her nose and whispering

She just silently walks with him, every once in a while glancing at him with a confused glare.

As they're walking, Lucia steps on something that crunches weirdly beneath her feet. A look of horror washes over her face and she stares down at what she stepped on, a small, torn piece of weathered paper. Which she picks up and holds to her chest in a gentle hug.

"I... Maybe she's still okay... She must be around here somewhere"

He shines his torch around, examining the area, occasionally coughing into his sleeves and flinching at little sounds in the woods around them.

William looks over at what she is holding and his eyes widen, worried. He looked around. Maybe— we split up and find her quicker that away.

"yeah, yeah..."

Glancing around, trying to figure out what direction her sister could have gone, she ends up just picking a random direction and going that way.

He stays quiet. He turns in the opposite direction. His light shining at the trees. He moved quicker, but also a lot… more careful. You never know what could happen when you are alone in a forest.

Twenty minutes go by and all of a sudden Lucia taps his shoulder, a worried look on her face. In her hand she's holding Caligos scroll, it's closed but it's clear she wasn't as lucky with the forest as Lucia was. The scroll has quite a few tears and rips in it and is oddly silent

"William! William!! Do you know anyone who can fix her?!" Like anyone who deals with supernatural artifacts and knows how to repair them!?"

William screams, not expecting Lucia, he covers his mouth, half expecting to throw up again. When he doesn’t he sighs happily— when he sees the scroll he panics again.

Uh— n-no I’m really sorry I— We don’t… we don’t have people like that— at least not in Deadwood.

She nods, tears welling up in her eyes as she glances back to where she came from

"we should get out of here. And. And then.. I... I don't know... I don't know what to do"

She brings her free hand up to the back of her neck, scratching it slightly.

"there's. There's no one?! Are you sure? Please..."

As they're walking back, she starts silently crying. Though eventually she stops, forcing a weak smile instead and speaking as if more trying to convince herself

"she'll be fine.. I'm sure we can figure something out! Right...?"

William doesn’t respond, he chews his lip worriedly. Messaging someone very quickly.

Lucia spends the rest of the walk back completely silent, just, awkwardly holding the scroll, rolling it back up every time it threatens to fall apart on her

He bites his lip hard enough that it almost bleeds. He seems to get more worried the longer he stares at his phone.

It’ll be okay— maybe if I— get Amber here somehow she can help..?

Lucia shakes her head

"Ember handles supernatural artistry, and it's a lot harder to get in contact with her than it is Astra. Plus, we have no way of getting her to this world, or getting Cali back there..."

Lucia takes another deep breath in, trying to keep herself calm

"maybe she can hold out until I'm back to being a ghost! And I can get her to Ember, or one of Ember's apprentices. Or maybe if you have some masking tape I can piece her back together! You know, temporary fix!"

As they finally walk out of the woods Lucia whispers

"cards."

Her face is disappointed

"I stormed off cause we had an argument over the rules of go fish... Was having a hard time cooling off so I thought a walk would do me some good... But... At some point... I dunno, I found a clearing and it was so nice out and I was feeling nauseous so I laid down and took a nap... Next thing I know it was starting to get a little dark... And... Yeah you basically already know the rest..."

She shrugs, trying to hold back tears again

"this is why I don't like negative human emotions... It only ever leads to people getting hurt..."

She hugs the scroll a little tighter, although still very gentle with it

"and I'm worried... No I'm scared that if anything happens, that the memory of fighting over cards will be one of the last few either of us have together"

He stopped walking, he tilted his head and looked at Lucia, confused. As he listens his eyes widen, then they ease with concern. He walks back over, he wants to hug her— but he doesn’t know if he should.

Hey.. it’s okay. Stuff like that happens sometimes… but you— you’re upset which shows that you care!

He frowned. He had to picture himself having a horrible argument with one of his friends and watching them die angry to pity her. He sighed. Deciding to hug her anyway.

When he goes to hug her, she kinda panics a little, not sure of his intentions and definitely not wanting to damage the scroll. And in a quiet, weak voice as she tries to step back,

"what are you doing..?"

She shakes her head, unable to stop the tears

"no. No! You don't understand! Stuff happens is meant to be like, accidentally running into someone, or dropping a glass on the ground. Not... Not this... She's my sister... I was meant to protect her... I couldn't back then but.. but I thought I could now... Clearly not"

Sorry I should’ve been more careful— you were upset… thought a hug would help. Sorry.

… William sighs. He look at a direction in the woods. He coughs a few times, then starts walking again. Come on… sooner we get home, the sooner we can work something out.

She silently adjusts her grip on the scroll, so she can easily hold it with one arm, then she uses her free hand to grab the edge of his sweater sleeve, trying to get him to slow his walking speed a little as she finally whispers,

"sorry... You're walking a little fast..."

William keeps his head on the ground and kept walking. He took a deep inhale.

I just want to get out the forest. Don’t you? Being quick means we can get home faster and you can try to speak to your sister..

She speeds up her walking a little, coming to a jog in order to keep up with his pace

He rubbed his eyes. He looked over, he’s sure he can see a street light, so he quickens up. Once they get to the sidewalks he lets out a sigh of relief.

Okay. Nearly there.

When he quickens his pace again, she's forced to quicken hers. Trying to keep up is proving to be difficult for her. As they reach the sidewalk she miscalculates and trips over the curb, though instead of reaching out to try and stop herself from hitting it, she chooses to hold the scroll slightly tighter to protect it from the impact.

Once she quickly makes sure there's no extra damage to the scroll she gets back up and continues to follow William, having to run just a little to catch back up with him

William turned his head around. Seeing Lucia next to him he assumed nothing had happened. He clears his throat— or covers up a cough and kept walking towards his house.

Are you Alright? This has been an— Intresting day hasn’t it.?

"uhhhhh, yeah, I'll be okay... Are you okay? You've been... Off... I know you're sick, but is it just that? You've been really stressed all day"

She notices some small amounts of dust and dirt from the sidewalk on her toga and gently wipes it off, sighing

"I'm gonna have to wash this later, aren't I..."

I’m fine. I’m not sick— I just have a lot of stressful stuff to solve, that’s all.

I’m sure my mom might have something for you to wear in the mean time.

As they reach his house, she stares at him with a raised eyebrow

"mhm? Not sick? So you haven't been coughing this whole time? You're paler than normal, you've been coughing, now I'm no expert, but that doesn't exactly sound like a healthy person"

He sighs. I— I’m not sick. I’m just tired. Yeah.. I’m tired.

He hopes Caligo can’t hear him, because she knows that he’s lying, I mean, she was there when… it happened again. William bites his inner cheek. Hoping it won’t happen again, at least not soon.

"just tired? Well I guess that makes two of us... Question, does deadwood have a library? And if so is it open right now? I wanna go see if they have any books on the flora around here"

Mmm. You don’t have to lie to me, I get that you’re upset and worried.

We do. It wouldn’t be open right now, and the Library kind of sucks… and you’re sick, so you probably shouldn’t go until you feel better.

"what evidence do you have to prove I'm sick... I have more reason to believe you're sick than you do I"

She glances down at the scroll, almost patting it a little with her free hand

"do you have your house key? I mean your mom probably locks the door at night..."

Come on… look at you. Not— in a mean way but you look much sicker than I do. You’re pale, you’ve been shaking, your hands are super clammy and— when we took a break you looked out of it… like, your eyes glossed over and everything. Now what evidence do you have about me? That im coughing a lot? It’s just the cold..

Oh, of course I do. He takes his house keys from his pocket— on there are multiple keychains, including a few wolves, bands and other symbols Lucia most likely wouldn’t know off.

Her eyes narrow as he lists off things, then, she glances away, shifting her grip on the scroll back to one hand

"I do have some evidence... You've been coughing... You look pale... And..."

Before he can realize what she's thinking about, she pulls her arm back and punches him directly in the stomach

William stumbles back a little bit, he puts an arm around his stomach and another over his mouth. Half expecting to throw up. He blinks at the ground for a moment and looks back at Lucia.

Wh- what was that for!?

She nods slightly, noting his reaction.

"sorry, just proving my point... You're sick. You wouldn't have put a hand over your mouth if you didn't think there was a likely chance you would throw up"

She moves so she's holding the scroll at her side now, instead of in front of her.

"although it's only fair you also get a hit in on me... I did just kinda punch you."

Th-that’s not how that works! I’ve eaten food, you’ve just punched my stomach— of course it’s gonna feel like im gonna throw up!

Wh— I’m not gonna hit you! Oh my God that’s insane— I wouldn’t do that.!?

She moves and stands directly in front of his front door

"fine! You wanna play this game? I'll play! I ain't moving till you either admit you're sick, or punch me back. I know you won't do the latter so that leaves the former."

She glares at him

William crosses his arms for a moment. Realising she’s just a child and much shorter than him. He walks over and picks her up, he’s not the strongest himself but he manages to keep her up anyway. He fiddles with the keys for a moment before opening the door. He shuts the door with his leg and keeps carrying Lucia, until they are upstairs. He sets her down and He huffs— too much exercise for him.

He quickly snatches the scroll off of her, setting it down out of her view carefully. He grabs a blanket from his bed and throws it over Lucia.

When he picks her up, she begins to panic and squirm, disoriented from the sudden lack of ground and perspective change.

"hey- hey hey! Wait! No! I'm sorry!"

He does his hardest not to drop her, or accidentally hurt her or damage the scroll… it’s a hassle.

oh God, sorry I didn’t mean to make you— I was just. Urhm… I will go get you some water. Okay? Just— chill out, rest or something.

He sidesteps out of his room and walks down the stairs, quickly.

"I'm fine! Rea-really!"

She lays there with the blanket overtop her

"warm...."

She can't help but doze off, tired out from the day

William comes back 10 minutes later. His breathing is shakier than usual. He sets the glass on his desk, staring at the blanket where Lucia laid underneath and sighed. He gently grabbed Caligos scroll and went back downstairs to research how to fix her.
