The Iris Class

We made Pupusas this week! Pupusas are a food from El Salvador— they are made of corn masa and filled with a variety of fillings. We used beans and cheese!

The Irises noticed that we used two of the three sisters from previous cooking projects- corn and beans!

Tuesday, December 8th

Quinn: in The Nightmare Before Christmas everything is made out of clay.

Elias: why is it made out of clay?

Quinn: because it isn't real cause movies aren't real

Elias: well Elsa is real

Lou: yeah Elsa IS real

Elias: yeah yeah elsa is real but Old Town Road isn't real

This week, Chef Michelle provided us with everything we needed to make baked samosas. We practiced knife skills (the bear claw and saw) to cut up onions and mashed them into cooked potatoes and peas with some spices. After rolling out the dough, we filled each dough with potatoes and squeezed them shut!

Today we journaled stories! The prompt was to write about the beaver moon, but we also allowed for writing whatever the irises felt inspired about as well!

Quinn: see, that’s the bridge.

Elias: you climbed up that to get here?

Quinn: yeah

Mei'lani: Airplanes can have a rocket ship inside of them.

Elias: No they can't, that's not a real airplane.

Lola: Ummm guys, airplanes can be all kinds of different. Like some can have rockets and some can not.

Charlie: Oh yeah, I'm gonna make one with a rocket and one with no rocket.

Wes: I'm making a tower.

Lou: the moon is black and white and grey.

Elias: the surface of the moon has holes that are big.

Lola: how did that get here [pointing to a rover]

Elias: the rocket brought them.

Autumn: how are you going to paint your moon?

Elias: I'm making it a quarter so one part grey and one part white.

Lola: I'm using both of the colors with different paint brushes.

Tess: Are you so excited for Mother’s Day?

Me: I am! I hope that next Mother’s Day I can see my mom.

Lou: where does your mom live?

Me: my mom and dad live near portland, but my mom has a sickness that means I can’t see her because of the coronavirus.

Tess: so when you see her do you have to wear a mask?

Me: yeah. But I try not to see her too much so I don’t get her sick.

Lou: for Mother’s Day me and my dad made my mom a card so I tell her I love her.

Me: I’m so glad you found a way to show your mom you love her! Did she like the card?

Lou: yeah!

Tess: I show my mom I love her by giving her lots of hugs and kisses.

Lou: me too!

Elias: well my grandpa mike died. He was my moms dad. Before my mom and dad were borned they had different parents.

Me: I’m sorry your grandpa mike died. Did your mom love him?

This week was Three Sisters week in the Iris classroom. The Three Sisters refers to corn, beans, and squash, three crops often planted together in Native American traditions across what we now call North America.

There are many legends associated with the Three Sisters to explain how and why these plants are grown together. A common thread of the different stories is cooperation- the corn holds up the beans. The squash keeps the pests out and the soil moist. The beans add nutrients to the soil. Companion planting at its finest!
