You donât have to write about the worst thing that ever happened to you. I guarantee you have significant memories that arenât gonna get you sent to the counselorâs office. Or else the teacher isnât reading them because thatâs not always a part of writing assignments, in which case you can write whatever you want.
The skill theyâre trying to teach you is writing from experience. All writers put some of their own experience into what they write, even in fantasy novels. If you learn to do that, you become a much better writer, gain some insight into what the author was thinking in every book you read, and have an avenue for self expression through creativity, which is incredibly important because you need to be able to express yourself somehow or you wonât be capable of being a healthy adult; yes, even if youâre traumatized⌠In fact, especially if youâre traumatized.
That doesnât mean you have to write about a traumatic experience for English class. Thatâs not what your teacher is asking you to do, I guarantee it, so stop reading into assignments like this in that way. Theyâre just trying to give you basic skills you can use later to be more effective at self-expression and to be a better writer (which is a skill that will serve you no matter where you go in life).
Tl;Dr your teacher isnât out to get you. You donât have to write about your trauma and theyâre not asking you to. Theyâre teaching you basic skills.
