Series: Part 11 of life after sense
Summary:
Jon tips his head back and basks for a moment in the reprieve from active internal warfare, then snaps it forward abruptly when the sound of the doorbell cuts through the quiet. The ring is followed swiftly by the sound of scampering footsteps.
“If you even think about trying to get up to answer that I will sit on you.”
Jon puts the glasses on and huffs miserably at the realisation that such mischief is currently out of the question, even if he’d wanted to. The door clicks open, and he strains his ears to the rumble of a greeting he can’t quite hear. The cadence is low and grave and careful at first, then rises a little, terminating with a familiar resonant chuckle.
The corner of Jon’s mouth quirks up in a half-smile.
“Right, Martin’s out of earshot,” Tim declares, appearing in the doorway with a straining bag-for-life. Martin is not, and rolls his eyes before disappearing into the kitchen. “You can confide in me. What shitty museum exhibition are you pulling a sickie from? Something about Wordsworth? Tennyson? God forbid – Keats?”

35) Red Stallion: I got a not terribly nice comment about this one which means I can’t look at it or acknowledge its existence. I probably need a thicker skin, but come on guysssss… I thought we were meant to be niiiiiiiice over here…
34) Reasonable Use Policy: There is very much something to be said for writing For Oneself. I highly endorse such practice. Except of course, when it is ME and in that case it is Unacceptable. Girl, your britpop jokes too niche. Nobody but you is interested in Tesco Meal Deals. The email at the start is quite nice, you can keep that. But… stop talking about Pulp, nobody cares.
33) Chuckle Brothers But Evil: Grab-bag of jokes with the faintest whiff of something like a plot. Which is, you know, fine. But feel like it could sort of be… more usefully chopped up for parts? Like the jokes could have been saved for a piece with an actual plot, rather than shoehorning one in like I feel like I did here. Buuuut this was a good clear out of my TMA jokes notes app.
32) Reality Rejects Order: Don’t feel like I did Gerry justice, feel like the voice is just a biiiiiiiit off. The JonGerry dynamic is so Important to me, but I don’t think I’m terribly good at it. Aaaaand I think it reads a bit like even I don’t know what he’s up to (even though I did) – didn’t quite get the balance between mystery and just sounding like… fucked if I know man… I like my description of the charity shop though. That’s something!
31) Exceptional Circumstances: Nothing particularly against this one, I just think it… possibly doesn’t need to exist?? Series pacing-wise??? Or either be stuck on the end of the last one or at the front of the next one?? I don’t know, I like a lot of the dialogue (I loooove writing Daisy) but don’t feel like it holds its own weight as a complete piece.
30) Pancake Batter: The set-up makes me criiiiiiinge but I couldn’t get shit on Jon’s face any other way. It’s also randomly in past not present tense which I find way harder and makes my style sound clunky??? What did I do that for?? I think the dialogue is pretty decent though, apart from a few bits which are a bit on the nose therapy speaky.
29) Gingerbread House: Just can’t really remember this one. Can’t be awful?
28) Abundance of Being: I don’t know, I’ve got nothing specific against this one. It feels quite in character. The dialogue feels authentic, or as authentic as it can be making them Talk Healthily About Stuff. I just… hmmm. Sometimes you just don’t love how something turned out and can’t pinpoint why. Eh.
27) Unsightly Dances: I just wish I’d WAITED for this one, until I felt like I had a proper handle on the characters, and that I’d spent a bit more time fleshing out the setting. I had a few concepts and Go Hard lines to hang a piece off, and I stand by those concepts and Go Hard lines, but I just want another crack at it, really. I DO think the ending (which I struggle to Make Hit sometimes) is rather nice.
26) Patchwork Miracle: Fun and inoffensive, but I think clear that this is the result of a challenge week that I couldn’t cook something up for on one of the days. The Abba thing makes me laugh still. The ending feels rushed and on-the-nose cheesy, but for saying I combined two of the things I find hard – Martin and first person – not… excruciating. The fact that I couldn’t un-fuck the formatting is. Please don’t tell me about XML I’ll cry. I’m having to learn it for my real-life job. Stay away from my hobby, XML. Just pretend you haven’t noticed, dear reader.
26) Method Acting: I like the atmosphere of this one. It feels sort of… vaguely ominous in a witching hour kinda way. I’ve just gone off the rhotic accent headcanon a bit. I’ve done Research and it’s Plausible, but… I dunno. Just don’t like it anymore lol. I think the nursery rhyme bit is cheesy. I’m glad I made Jon worry about a fictional cat. THAT I very much stand by. And again – quite like the ending of this one!
25) Forget-me-never: Some nice bits of standalone writing – I’m weirdly endeared by the piano ribs bit. And I think the nightmare is some like… Proper Horror, which I normally just skirt the edges of so that was fuuuuun. I did not need to write the first bit. I have written Jon having so many panic attacks. He did not need one here. As standalones – nice, but balance and pacing – weird.
24) Ice and Static: Statement fic statement fic! I think the statement is about as good a job as I, scared of first person writing, could have done. I think there are some inconsistences in the statement giver’s voice, but I’m good with most of how writing about Jon’s fucked up experience came out. The bits around the statement were like pulling teeth and I think it shows a bit. There were too many people in one room to keep track of, and I possibly should have orchestrated a reason for there to have been fewer there.
23) Send Them Away: There’s some fun stuff in this one, and some bits that I feel like came out quite well. The weird flesh amputation scene I’m especially proud of, and I loved the process of getting weird with loads of different styles. But as a Concept, putting them all together in one fic wasn’t a great choice, I don’t think. I don’t know how else I would have done it but… yeah. Idk. Mixed bag.
22) Abandon Ship: Okay this one is relatively low for how much I like the bits I like… I think I’ve made a decent comedic stab at some S1 type fun, and concocted some pretty in character internalisations. But I just don’t know enough about music to have hung a fic on so it reads weird to me. People seem to like this one?? Sorry!
20) Thumbs-Up: Inoffensive and cute. Feel like I’m quite good at writing Tim’s voice but not his like… complexities?? If that makes sense?? Like I can quite easily write Things That Sound Like Things Tim Would Say, but there’s no weight behind them. I’m guilty sometimes of cartooning him a bit. Need to write something where he’s proper fucked up Tim and not S1 easy breezy Tim airdropped wherever I want him.
19) Choosing, Completely: The letter at the start, I’m cautiously rather proud of, especially since first person is Not My Bag. I like Most of the second bit, I think. Third bit can get in the bin. It doesn’t work timeline-wise. Fourth bit I mostly like. Fifth bit was lazy. I like the last bit, I think. Rollercoaster of emotions about this one but yeah… pride at the letter and overall Message of Choosing Love elevates its ranking a bit
18) Metaphysical Creativity: I have immense fun writing Daisy. I feel like I got her voice down pretty good here. But Jon’s bits feel a bit monologuey and I think there’s only so many lore recaps one can get away with. The one in this overstayed its welcome a bit maybe. But yeah… quite a fun read, if a bit wordy??
17) Roaming Charges: I think I ate with the last bit. Vivid image and fuckass emails. And the conversation I think was the first time I wrote The Dynamic in a way that felt right? I also gave them both my synaesthesia, which is fun to do. I don’t know, I just find this one like… pleasantly unassuming. Transatlantic pining attempt one, improved upon perhaps in one further down this list…
16) The Ferryman: First TMA fic so special place in heart! I think this holds up quite nicely as a Piece of Writing, but (understandably maybe, be nice to yourself Abbs) doesn’t quite feel secure in characterisations or like… acclimatisation with the setting/set-up I guess? I’d only listened to TMA once and tbh probably didn’t entirely understand the ending lmao. But yeah… set-up for The Traveller, which is (I think) its older cooler sibling.
15) To Be Believed: Okay parts of this, I will admit to LOVING. I really do like the scene where Tim n Sash are guessing about what Jon might be like, for example. But why the HELL did I put in that random flashback to Georgie? I’ve been kicking myself about it for two entire years. What’s it doing there???? Also think on reflection it was a bit lazy to be like And They Believed Him Don’t Worry About It. Eh. So bits I love and bits I hate so ends up in’t middle.
14) Compos Mentis: Just made myself laugh quite a bit with this one. I think I managed to communicate an out-of-it vibe pretty well, which sort of let me get away with not bothering too much with setting. And it was a great relief to get the cite your sources joke out of my system. It had been knocking about for YEARS.
13) Unyielding Truth: Card-carrying asexual hopes she addressed this okay. She certainly addressed it in a way that felt good to her. She thinks it’s probably unrealistic that they would talk about it so sensibly, but it’s MINE so they CAN. And god it felt good to write Jon bloody well sticking up for himself about SOMETHING.
12) Tangible Goals: Internal Jonologue FTW. Would be higher if it was pure internal jonologue I had to think about, but I sort of just Didn’t address how Martin was doing like at all. Buuuut I feel like I got the setting down nicely AND I got to inform the world of my weird panic attack manifestation of Listing Things. And give it to Jon.
11) The Traveller: This one just has a nice vibe?? I think it flows nicely in a sort of lyrical way?? Yeah, I like it Overall but some of the individual lines have me a bit hrrrggghhhh. And the ending tips a bit too far into cheesy, possibly? But yeah, I do like this one!
10) Artist’s Rendition: PROJECTION TIME BABEY. Decent balance between punny and like… heavy I think. Setting feels a bit lazy, I can actively read myself being like CUT TO THE CHASE. Unrealistic that Jon would manage to stay completely clothed throughout what is implied to be a fairly established relationship? Mayhappen. Suspension of disbelief excusable? Mayhappen.
9) Parasite Balloon: I think the title is stupid. HOWEVER. Very funny of me to have an NPC call Jon busted for very little reason. I like the Tim n Sasha bants at the start and think the weird metaphors just about hold their own. And I got to research bog gardens, which is a fond memory.
8) Sugar Lumps: I just like how this one came together. Enjoyed deciding where Martin’s crush might have come from in this AU, the joniosyncracies if you will. There’s one line that really annoys me that I will not be revealing. Guess what it is for the chance to win a prize (there is no prize). Quite pleased with the subtle injecting of spooky into the mundane? Reads alright to me, anyway!
7) Strange Times: I’m cautiously proud of the eulogy bit. Also cautiously proud of my first proper go at writing the Very Difficult Basira, whether it came off well or not. Possibly unrealistic that the girls objected to just killing him lmao. Let Me Have This. Tooth-rotting ending which you know what, I stand by, So There.
6) Henceforth: I don’t know man, I just really rather like this one. Horrible to admit as a self-flagellator. Stubborn, tired Jon happened quite easily and I just looove existing in his internal jonologue for a bit. Again, maybe rushed the ending a bit. Aaand whenever I’m writing safehouse stuff I sort of forget to check in on Martin who… also must have been feeling a bit ruff lmao. But Jon’s Right There and so tantalisingly Wet and Cat.
5) Pinkie Promise: I’m – brace yourself – unashamedly proud of the dialogue of this one and feel like Jon’s insane choice is quite in character lol. Also loved watching Really Wild Animals on vimeo as ‘research’. The Jmart bit at the end was possibly unnecessary but doesn’t jar tooooo badly I don’t think? Basira’s absence being unacknowledged feels a bit weird. But we move.
4) No Accounting For Taste: is it a bit too soft? Mayhappen. Did I laugh myself into a coughing fit with the Family Guy Death Pose joke. Yes I did. I just like this one. I just love fleshing Jon out into a person. I think the flashback is clumsily introduced but once it gets going comes out nicely. Dare I say… vivid?? (God getting down here is excruciating I feel like an arrogant PRICK).
3) Spiders Eat Flies: I don’t even think there’s anything particularly good about this. I just… it’s my baby. I don’t know why. It was an early go at TMA fic. I had a single listen through and a dream. Please don’t question its position on the podium. Let her have her bronze.
2) Four Chances: This one might be elevated by recency bias, but I feel like it’s a full, cohesive piece. I like the balance I’ve got between poetic-y bits and grounded, real bits. It feels dreamlike in a way I intended. I’m PROUD of Jon for wanting to get better for Himself. Yeah… liking this one at the minute. So THERE.
1) 1.17am: Okay I admit it. I think the search history is the most I’ve ever eaten. I am thoroughly proud of it. And actually, yeah, I’m going to say it – I’m proud of the rest too! There are some lines in the second section I cringe at a bit, but I think the transatlantic pining and babey Jon are really rather nice. And yeah… even the ending. Feel like it has Impact. Yes. Yes, I like this one and am proud of it. It wins my personal gold.
Well, that was fun and excruciating in equal measure! Sorry it was a long one... Congratulations and thank you if you made it this far! Would love to hear thoughts if anyone has any!
I always wonder about what fic authors think about their own stuff… would anyone be interested in a (just for fun!) ranking post of my own TMA fics lol

“…oh no, wait, we might be alright. Jon, you with me?”
Jon doesn’t come to, exactly. He didn’t really go anywhere in the first place, except a wonderful, chalky, throat-scratching sea. He had been bobbing contentedly on a splintering piece of driftwood, as the gentle breeze carried a siren song of 'shit, should have adjusted the dosage, jesus you look insane -'
I was thinking too hard about your alt. Fear's Avatar Jon fic, and came to the realisation that if you wiggle timelines around just enough - and make a few canon-adjacent assumptions - Jon could've been in Lukas' super isolation apartment complex well in University.
I now have many ideas, including more alternates, and I may end up writing a fic about it - So, thank you for the insperation, have a lovely day. :]

“Anyway, I meant more – why that finger for the one to chop off? Pinkie’s way easier access, and easier to get through. Wouldn’t even need the knife. Could probably twist it off to show you now if you’re not convinced; assume you’re a visual learner, after all.”
Jon winces.
“No no, that’s quite alright, thank you. Surely that’d be kinaesthetic anyway, if you were giving a hands-on demonstration. No, I just figured…” he picks at a hangnail and shrugs again, sheepish this time. “I don’t know. Not especially likely to be using the ring finger for its intended purpose, am I?”
She frowns, and returns her gaze to his –

“Well, frankly your professionalism is none of my business. It’s not my problem how your probation goes.”
Jon winces to himself the second the words are out of his mouth, closing his eyes like doing so might suck them back in. 'Well, there that goes', his internal monologue sighs in its bleakly familiar defeatedness. Miraculously though, that warm cackle rings out again through his self-imposed darkness.
“Ouch. Come on, have we not bonded over cursing Microsoft to hell? I was really starting to feel a connection there. Or was that just the Wi-Fi signal fighting for its life?”
Jon dares to open his eyes. Tim is grinning at him. Like maybe, just maybe he hasn’t ruined -

Martin is going to wake up soon.
Any moment now, he will open his eyes and be greeted by the hazy low-light outline of the stained navy-and-star lampshade that has migrated from his childhood bedroom to his Stockwell flat. Martin is going to wake up soon, because there is absolutely no way that he is sharing a sofa, and sharing a blanket, and sharing the last of a family bag of Magic Stars from the service station, in rural Scotland, with a sock-footed Jonathan Sims, who looks so soft, and so nervous, and there is absolutely no way, no possible way in the whole world, that he, and sock-footed Jonathan Sims, are preparing to have a conversation about relationship boundaries.
