the backrooms movie reminded me of "Presence" by Helen Oyeyemi so I'm relistening to it and realizing that it feels like EXACTLY what the movie was going for, if the writing had been prioritized over the visuals. a clumsy marriage is tried by a new psychiatric practice that involves staying in a place that's odd, cold, familiar but uncanny, almost puppet-like, with memories of people that come and go and shift, an almost-reality that sucks you in and makes you forget when and where you are...
the backrooms movie is obviously heavily inspired by things like Everywhere at the End of Time, art about memories that get distorted to hell and back. but it doesn't tap into grief in the same way and i feel like that's extremely missed out potential. i guess that's a fault of needing to be a horror movie with slasher tropes but daaammmn. what's so interesting and unsettling about Presence is that the memories of people act like they're alive, but out of the corner of the main character's eye she can tell they're not there. theyre totally ephemeral, but also warm and physically present, and impossible not to treat as if they were people you already have a connection with. BUT, this really leans into grief, instead of leaning away from it like in Backrooms.
the other thing i realized about that movie during Presence is that IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.... i feel like if the characters were fleshed out just a LITTLE MORE that it would've been a genuinely GOOD movie instead of one with really impressive sets and camera shots that leaves you with nothing new!! i was so confused that they barely showed anything about Clark and his wife or Mary and her mom-- on the other hand, Presence takes a good chunk of time to set up who the main couple are, what kind of people they are, and a bit of their shared experiences-- AND even in the exposition they change!
is that supposed to be a backrooms-type story decision, that the characters are almost nothing but blips in time who have experienced a single prominent life event??? i get that the movie is more about the place than the people but they could've lent into THAT more too? why bother following the perspective of a main character if you're only gonna gloss over their relationships and motives ? anyway isn't it more fun to really dig into who these people are and WHY the setting affects them?

Pedestrian traffic lights
Ooooh, we have a bunch of really fancy pedestrian traffic lights in Germany! I need to share:
Starting off with the difference between formerly Eastern German traffic lights (upper images) and formerly Western German traffic lights (lower images):
The city of Erfurt had some additions, like an umbrella or a heart:
Same sex love in Marburg (upper image) and Frankfurt (lower image):
Traffic light lady in Bremen:
Karl Marx light in Trier:
Face of Friedrich Engels in Wuppertal:
Elvis in Friedberg (Hessen):
A sparrow (for the Golden Sparrow film awards) in Gera:
Winemaker in Bad Dürkenheim:
Mainzelmännchen (mascot of the public broadcasting service ZDF) in Mainz:
Otto Waalkes (German Comedian) in Emden:
Town musicians of Bremen in Bremen:
A miner in Pirmasens, Rheinland-Pfalz:
