Morning After Pill for HIV

ACTUALLY THERE IS.

There’s a FDA approved daily medication called Truvada, or the PrEP treatment, that is 92-99% effective in preventing the contraction of HIV.

To clarify, this is not one pill. It’s a course of treatment for 28-30 days depending on your provider, works best if started within 4 hours of exposure, but you have four days to start, and needs to be completed, which is the difficult part due to side effects. Various drug combinations are offered, all with similar prophylactic effectiveness, and care must be taken to avoid reexposure during the course of treatment and the following window period (12 weeks after exposure in some places, 12 weeks after PEP completion ie 16 weeks after exposure in others, ask your care provider). The test done after the window period is the outcome of PEP. Some places will still recommend further testing up to a year afterwards.

The side effects SUCK. I want everyone to be aware that it really can be brutal to your health, but it sometimes is the best solution. However, be aware that you WILL be miserable. Expect vomiting, exhaustion, diarrhea—I’d compare it to the worst flu you ever had. It’s also quite expensive, if your insurance doesn’t cover things like this.
