¡Arepa! ¡Arepa!
Meal: Dinner at Caracas Arepa Bar
Season: Spring
Why: Met up with friends and headed to my neighborhood sports bar, Mulholland's to watch the NBA playoffs but we didn't want bar food.
Mood: It was a pleasant 72 degrees so we wanted a place with open windows and an inexpensive price tag.
What I drank: I was in the mood for a beer and since it's local, and delicious, I ordered the Brooklyn Summer Ale. It came with a shot of rum for only $1 more. It wasn't just any rum but Venezuelan white rum, which by the countries law, must be aged for at least two years. It was a smooth chug.
What I ate: We ordered chips and guacamole to start. Sitting at the end of the bar we observed the fry guy cooking up fresh banana chips. They were served in a handsome basket and still warm when they were put in front of us. For dinner I ordered my fave, La Mulata. An arepa with black beans, jalapenos, grilled red peppers and white cheese.
My dessert: A shot, courtesy of the bartender, prepared with Venezuelan rum, jasmine bitters, agave, and lime.
Cost: $22 with tip
Final Thoughts: The bartender was attentive, friendly, and not over-bearing. The food was hot and fresh. The beer was cold and the shots were poured with love. Overall, it was tasty, quick, and cheap. I have and wil continue to go back!
