FONT decisions have been weighing heavily on me as my FH and I decide on our wedding invitation style. There are so many and for some reason he and I can't quickly agree on one we both LOVE. That, however, is not the driver of my anger over fonts today. This is:

Paraphrased note forwarded from my manager to my team:

All, the CEO has expressed his frustration that presentations he is receiving from our team have been in different fonts. Effective immediately all presentations should be in Calibri font.

Deep breaths...

Honestly, I think this is a fine request, but does it have to be so imperative. Can't the request say..."hey guys it would be great if all of the presentations you are providing me came in the same font. Can you work on transitioning to this over the next quarter". Ahhh, micromanagement.

CHEAP people are so confusing to me. I get being cost-conscious, especially now that I've decided to take a sabbatical from my 8-8, 6 day a week job. But, cheap I don't get. I've found that cheap people are often people who also act entitled (another pet peeve of mine). I think it may be a defense mechanism to mask their inability to have power over any other part of their lives.

Example: I was reading a recent yelp review about a restaurant. The woman gave them a bad review because there was lipstick on her martini glass, which the waiter also thought was disgusting and brought her a new drink. Why the bad review then? Because she didn't get a free drink!! Why does that make any sense? She got a clean glass and a new drink. The restaurant still has to pay for the alcohol and the bartender and the waiter...

COOKING is actually fun and relaxing for me if I have all the ingredients, the right pots and pans, the right utensils, my oven works properly, I can time everything right, I don't have to handle much raw meat, the recipe does not include a tomatillo (long story), I do not have to let anything sit for 2-10 hours before hand and it comes out tasting great!

Needless to say, dinner does not often get made by me in my household. I actually get anxious when my loving fiancee asks me the simple question, "What do you want for dinner my love?" I literally want to run to the bedroom, hide under the covers and roll up into a ball. I think it's a combination of the fact that I am well aware the combination of items I listed above will not magically appear before me and that what i actually want for dinner every night is pizza (apparently not a sustainable nutritional model according to some doctors...whatever!). Luckily I've found this great new website that I'm hoping will solve all of my problems. Wish me luck!!

LOGISTICS of scheduling meetings with more than 2 people is painful, but when you have to ask others for a favor it is even worse. I just scheduled a bi-weekly meeting with 10+ people and the conference room I picked is booked for 2 months from now. So, I check to see who has it booked and realize it's a "placeholder" and nobody has been invited to it yet. I reach out to the person who set the meeting up asking him for a favor to move his time or location and he response back with a curt, I need it that day. Which, generally I'd just be gracious and try to fix things on my side...but today I am not feeling gracious. I'm going to try to use reason: The date is in 8 weeks; He has not invited anyone to the meeting yet; He could find an alternate location. But honestly, I have to be realistic, if he didn't get it the first time he probably won't get it now. For full disclosure here is our conversation:

ME: I just booked a recurring meeting for a bi-weekly cross-functional Finance/Product/CIO discussion and my conference room did not accept because it looks like the room is on “hold” in August. Do you need it for the specific time slot you chose? If not, could you re-book your holding meeting so I can have the room during that time for my group meeting. Thanks!!

USELESS CO-WORKER: I need the room on August 21st

ME:Understand, but since I have a bi-weekly recurring meeting with 12 people that will be starting on 7/10 and you don’t appear to have any invitees to your meeting yet I was hoping you could find another location or time slot instead of me having to move my meeting for 1 week 2 months from now.

SCREAMING is still apparently an acceptable method of communication for some people, namely my boss. I guess he’s never been on a conference call before where there is a time delay and people sometimes talk over each other. My way to deal with it is to laugh and either take the floor or give the floor. His method is to apparently is to make everyone on the phone & in the room feel uncomfortable. I gave him a stare down, apologized to the rest of the group, said my piece and then shut the f up for the rest of the meeting. He did go on to tell me that it was only the 5th time he’s had to raise his voice in a meeting during his time at the Company. I’m not sure if it was an apology, but if a 10 second misunderstanding about who is talking is the kind of thing he needs to raise his voice about he has some serious control (or other) issues.

WASTING my time with a manager who likes to "script" everything out weeks before going in to meetings. I told him today that we should focus on what we're doing & why we're doing it, not what it's going to look like at the meeting. He nods his head and tells me how right I am, brilliant even, and then he gets out his friggin' graph paper and starts drawing it out. Sir, I need you to look at me and have a conversation with me and make sure we're on the same page. I do not need you to dump your brain onto a piece of paper while mumbling incomprehensible words and then apologizing every 2 minutes for doing so.

ARGHHH. How do these people become Sr. Directors? I am getting dummer evry day I spend hear!!!

But, 1 more year and I get a free candy dish...so I got that going for me. Some more interesting awards...

APPARENTLY the company I work for has reached the size where it's acceptable to have executive assistants carry on a full conversations, via email of course, on behalf of their [executive] bosses. This seems wildly inefficient given the fact that they most often do not have the ability to respond to questions on the subject matter being discussed. Here is what a recent conversation looked like:

EA: My executive wants to know what the purpose of the meeting on Thursday is.

ME: There is an agenda in the meeting invite and the purpose will be to discuss that. If your executive wants to talk about it further I'd be happy to set up some time before the meeting.

2 days later...

EA:Thank you. [no response to my offer to request further discussion]

3 days later...

EA: My executive is going to be 20 minutes late for the 30 minute meeting you scheduled.

2 days later...

EA: Did you get the message that my executive is going to be late to your meeting.

ME: Yes, Thank you.

Um, hi...executive...why don't you and I just talk for 2 minutes about the thing and then we can all get on the same page. Good lord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COFFEE spill official tracking, Day 1. This morning I had to stay home to let some plumbers in and I made myself a pot of coffee. When the plumbers were done I had some coffee left so I pulled down a re-usable, plastic to-go coffee mug and filled it up. It took approximately 1 minute to get from my door to the car at which point I spilled coffee on the driver's seat, the steering wheel and my pants.

I'm telling you...every day. And, this time it wasn't even a disposable coffee cup. Here's the culprit. I have the green one.

EVERYDAY I am confronted with the early morning question of will I have coffee all over me before I get to the office or won't I? No matter what I try, I almost always end up with coffee all over my arm, coat or foot. Seriously, about 90% of the time it ends up somewhere outside of the cup and on me before I get the 50 ft. from the SBUX to my office building. Ridiculous! And I'm not talking no iced coffee...this is as hot as you can get, black coffee.

You may think "Why don't you just get a travel mug and have the nice Barista fill that up? It would solve all your problems and I think you get a little discount too." Of course I've thought of that, which is why I have 3 travel mugs at my desk. One of which I knocked over and spilled old muddy coffee sludge all over my desk just the other day. I love you environment, but I can't keep up with your needs. I just need these guys from Canada to figure this lid thing out and all will be well with the coffee world.

I'M STARVING but have no time to decide what I want to eat so I get to the sandwich shop and say...I want that thing with hummus on it. Apparently there are 2 sandwiches with hummus on them.

There's this one:

Mediterranean Chicken Panini grilled marinated chicken breast with hummus, red onion, roasted red pepper and lemon vinaigrette on focaccia

And there's this one:

Hummus and Vegetable Wrap lettuce, roasted eggplant, hummus, feta, tomatoes and red peppers

I meant the 1st one and got the 2nd one. I had 2 bites but the cold, slimy eggplant mush completely turned me off. I tried pulling it out, but it was a disaster. So i will remain hungry for the rest of the day. I should probably close my office door since I'm kind of a horrible person when I'm hungry!

EMAIL does not require a stop by/phone call follow-up within 2 seconds of sending the email. If that is the new "normal" then I've completely missed the boat on the point of this form of communication. I think it should work as follows (which means this is the right way):

Email when you are sending communication to multiple people or want feedback on the record from someone.

Call when you want to discuss an issue, have a topic that needs explanation that can't be done via email or don't have a strong relationship with the other party so you want to start establishing one.

Stop by when you are up & about & my door is open.

Call or Stop by post email sending if you sent the email purely to cover the "multiple people" aspect and really need to discuss one-on-one.

If I like you I don't really care how you communicate with me...just be ready to deal with my attitude if the people I don't like have just emailed me, then called me and then stopped by all to ask the same question that doesn't need to get answered immediately.

Phew...that was a long one!!!

I HATE being late. In my mind, arriving one minute after the agreed-upon arrival time is late. It's not that I always think the party I'm meeting is going to be upset or annoyed if I'm late, it's just that the complete idea of it leaves me riddled with anxiety. The problem is that I'm also very impatient so since I hate being late, which ends up causing me to usually get places early, I end up having to wait for other people ALOT! I need to find a way to break this vicious cycle!!!

AMBIGUITY in emails can lead to confusion, frustration & anger! It's just work, it's just work, it's just work....deep breaths.

In the web"page" I found in my image search, the author says that there is more risk & ambiguity in having a corporate job than being an entrepreneur. He might have something...except the company he started in 2009 doesn't exist anymore so who knows.
