12 of them have written two or fewer episodes

all but one of them have written two or fewer stories, with the only exception being jane baker, who exclusively cowrote with her husband pip baker and was always billed second (as pip and jane baker)

only 11 of them have written an episode without a male cowriter (2 of those wrote one episode together)

of the 5 women who have exclusively written with a male cowriter, 2 were billed first and 3 were billed second.

literally all three non-white women (actually they were all Black i believe) to write for the series only wrote one episode that was co-written by the white male showrunner (only one of them was billed first)

sja and class had 0 episodes written by women. to be fair to class, this is bc all 8 episodes were written by one guy, and there were plans to bring at least two women on just that i know of for s2 before it was cancelled. sja on the other hand has no excuse because there were 53 episodes (comprising 26 stories) and the titular character is literally a woman.

torchwood actually does better on its own, with 5 female writers writing 13 of the 41 total episodes (and only two of those being cowritten by men), but that's still only 32%.

“The Story and the Engine” was the SECOND EVER episode by a writer of color that wasn’t co-written by a white writer. We have yet to have ANY episodes solo credited to a woman of color. No writers of color were in the writers room at all until chibnall era.

I made this post about misogyny because it seemed to be the word of the day around here but The Problem is bigger than that. I love Doctor Who because it’s often about joyful renewal and change, and you can’t have a meaningful change to what this show is unless you allow someone outside of this specific fanboy auteur clique to take the reins.

I’ve written a lot about how Doctor Who is always in conversation with its fandom. (I wrote a thesis about this.) To me, Doctor Who is at its best when fans who have something new to say about it are given the authority to do so. That’s what made RTD1 special to me—a gay man reinvented the show to be more character-driven by using his expertise in making soap opera. S1 is one of my favorite nuwho seasons for a reason. This is a type of author Doctor Who had never seen before.
