Putnam Park is one of three Continental Army campsites established by George Washington during the Winter of 1778 to 1779 that combined caused Redding’s population to swell more than triple in size by January 1779; making Redding one of Connecticut’s most highly populated towns at the time and creating significant duress for the local population. Two young soldiers were executed on the same day off what is now known as Gallows Hill Road; one hung as a spy, the other shot for desertion.
