dating apps had always been a weird thing for stella; she'd all but considered deleting tinder entirely when she realized how different her wants when it came to love and dating were from so many of the people she met through the apps. maybe it was the romantic in her, but part of her always knew that she wanted something more than surface level. but every so often, there was a little glimmer, someone that stuck out and made her hold onto the app just a little longer. nolan had held conversation well, showed interest, and conveniently lived just downstairs, and on top of it all actually wanted to make a plan to hang out, so of course she'd agreed. maybe she wasn't sure exactly what to make of it, but it would be fun at least.
"you are real!" stella called out, a grin on her face as she bounded down the stairs from the fifth floor to the fourth, stopping her strides once she stood in front of nolan. not that she'd necessarily doubted him for a second, but for all she knew, the subtle taps against her floor earlier that day were purely her imagination. "i made a list of some of my favorite spots around town," she held up her phone. "i don't think those are haunted, but it's at least a great way to see palmview, if that works?"
nolan had been waiting just outside his loft with two iced matchas sweating in the late afternoon heat, one tucked into each hand while he absentmindedly watched the stairwell. the second he spotted stella making her way down from the fifth floor, a grin spread across his face like it had been waiting on her arrival. she was even prettier in person, soft and radiant all in one. "there you are," he laughed, stepping forward to offer her one of the drinks. "i figured if a matcha is something you like then i could give it a try, it only felt right since today is about exploring new things." he lifted his own cup in a tiny toast. "to our date filled day."
he couldn't help but laugh when she declared that he was, in fact, real. "very much so." his shoulders bounced with another chuckle before his gaze flickered to the list on her phone. "you made a list?" there was something genuinely charmed in the way he said it. "that's brilliant." he smiled to himself for a second before taking a sip of his drink and giving an approving nod. he wouldn't have minded getting lost with her either. "that works perfectly fine with me." casually, he reached over with his free hand, his fingers finding hers naturally, like it was the easiest thing in the world.
a crooked smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze and nodded toward the stairs leading down. "you ready for the grand tour?" he asked. "fair warning, it's not that long. everything is really on the first floor, but we could easily just exit out after. outside of here, where did you want to hit up first?"

"honey, i'm home!!" stella called out, rather unceremoniously, as she pushed open the front door to reverie's place. stella didn't remember when she got to this point with rev, the comfort in just being able to let herself in, but in her mind, they were far past it. long gone were the polite knocks or asking permission to enter. nowadays stella and rev had granted each other standing permission to stop by whenever the other wanted (within reason, of course, especially as they aged into adulthood). she'd never grown up with siblings, not in the biological sense, so having rev around had always been one of stella's favorite blessings.
"i come bearing gifts," she continued talking as she pulled items out of the tote bag she'd brought in; chocolate (as promised), a bottle of their go-to wine (not mentioned but stella never showed up without it at this point), plus the gifts she'd bought for both reverie and mimi from her trip to disney. once the snacks were laid out with the plushies, stella beamed, collapsing onto the couch with a sigh, happily allowing the small dog to jump on top of her. "now do you forgive me for not taking you with me?"
"mmmfph." the response came from somewhere near the living room floor, where reverie was lying face down across the rug like she'd simply melted there and decided getting back up sounded like tomorrow's problem. one arm was stretched toward the coffee table, the other tucked beneath her head, mimi stationed loyally beside her as though standing guard over the world's saddest potato. at the mention of gifts, though, reverie lifted her head just enough to peer over in stella's direction, blinking once before her gaze landed on the little collection she'd begun unpacking. "...you really did get gifts," she murmured, sounding faintly impressed. with all the enthusiasm of someone peeling themselves out of a blanket cocoon, she pushed herself off the floor and shuffled over to the couch instead, flopping down beside her best friend. the second she spotted the stitch plush, however, her entire expression softened. "aww, stells!" she breathed, scooping him into her arms. "look at him. he's so cute." she hugged the plush a little tighter than was probably necessary before leaning over to wrap stella in a quick little bear hug. "yes, all is forgiven," she declared with a solemn nod. "but i want to come next time."
settling back into the cushions with stitch tucked securely against her side, reverie watched mimi happily soak up the attention with a smile that, while small, was genuine. "thank you for coming, stelly belly." she reached immediately for the chocolate before her eyes drifted to the bottle of wine sitting on the table. "want to share a glass with me? or..." she considered it for all of half a second. "...we could be really classy and drink straight from the bottle." the corners of her mouth twitched upward as she nudged stella gently with her shoulder. "also, i need updates. all of them. how's the marriage coming along? did disney treat you nice? did you cry? i feel like disney makes people cry." she paused, glancing down at the plush in her lap before back at stella as she popped a piece of chocolate in her mouth. "and before you ask...yes, i have been lying on my floor for at least twenty minutes. it felt appropriate."
with: theo ( @mxdnxghtvellxchor ) where: scoreboard
her fingertips drummed a quiet rhythm against the steering wheel as she sat parked in the scoreboard's lot, watching people come and go through the front doors. she'd been there for the better part of fifteen minutes, cycling through emotions faster than she could name them. nervous was the easiest one to identify. theo had always had a way of making her nervous, though there was fear tucked somewhere beneath it, but every time she tried to put her finger on exactly what she was afraid of, it slipped away before she could catch it. maybe it was the uncertainty of seeing someone who had once been woven so naturally into her days. maybe it was wondering if too much time had passed. maybe it was neither of those things at all.
she finally let out a slow breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding and climbed from the car before she could talk herself into another lap around the parking lot. the familiar buzz of conversation wrapped around her the moment she stepped inside. she offered the bartender a warm smile as she claimed a stool near the end of the bar, thanking them when they offered a menu for her to look over. she was almost always early. it gave her a chance to settle into places before they became busy, to people-watch, to wonder where everyone had been before they walked through the door. she absentmindedly traced little circles into the condensation of the water the bartender had set down, glancing toward the entrance every few moments without really meaning to.
then the door opened, and there he was. without thinking, her face broke into an easy smile, the knot she'd been carrying around all afternoon loosening almost instantly. funny how that worked. "hey!" she greeted the moment he was close enough, slipping off the stool long enough to pull him into a quick, familiar hug before settling back into her seat. "look at you! you look great, theo." she meant it, he seemed happy. "so…tell me something good. i don't really care what it is. i just wanna hear one good thing that's happened to you recently."

Kieran had been talking a lot of confidence for someone who had absolutely no business doing so. "I'm just saying," She announced, spinning a hot pink bowling ball in her hands like she was moments away from competing in a professional tournament, "I've seen enough bowling movies to know this is at least eighty percent mindset."
The ball slipped ever so slightly in her grip, but she caught it before it hit the floor. "...That didn't happen." With all the confidence she could muster, the petite young woman stepped up to the lane with a dramatic breath, and sent the ball rolling.
It immediately veered left: Hard. Thunk - straight into the gutter. Silence followed as she stared after it for a moment, all before slowly turning back toward the seating area. "I'd like to formally blame the lane." She pointed a finger towards it, accusingly. "It had bad vibes." A laugh escaped her as she grabbed another ball from the rack, shaking her head at herself. "Alright, redemption round. Nobody look at me."
She waited approximately half a second before glancing over at the nearest person anyway. "...You looked, didn't you?" A crooked grin spread across her face. "Be honest; was it as tragic as it felt, or do I still have enough dignity left to finish this game?"
nolan had been half watching the scoreboard and half attempting to convince the claw machine across the arcade section that today was finally going to be his day when kieran's running commentary stole his attention instead. by the time she declared bowling to be "eighty percent mindset," he was already grinning into the neck of his soda bottle. "that sounds made up," he called over with a laugh, "but i really want to believe you." he watched the hot pink ball take an immediate detour into the gutter, his mouth pressing into a line as he fought a losing battle against the smile tugging at the corners of it. when she accused the lane of having bad vibes, he nodded with exaggerated seriousness. "honestly? i've been suspicious of lane seven all day. looks shifty."
he made a great show of squeezing his eyes shut the second she announced nobody was allowed to look, even lifting one hand to shield them for good measure. "...okay," he said, "i'm definitely not looking." a beat passed before one eye cracked open almost immediately. "ah, damn." he sighed dramatically. "you caught me." his shoulders bounced with another quiet laugh as he leaned back in his chair. "if it makes you feel any better, it wasn't tragic." he tilted his head, pretending to think it over. "it was...cinematically unfortunate. like the kind of thing that'd get replayed in slow motion with emotional piano music."
finally, he pushed himself to his feet and wandered over to the ball return, rubbing his palms together like he was about to put on a masterclass. "alright," he announced, flashing her a crooked grin. "watch a pro." he took careful aim, sent the ball rolling...and watched it make a beeline for the gutter with absolutely no intention of correcting itself. he stared after it for a beat before slowly turning back toward her, completely unfazed. "what?" he asked, lifting both hands innocently. "i said watch a pro. i never said i was one." the laugh that escaped him came easily as he wandered back over to her side, bumping her shoulder lightly with his own. “y'know, at this rate, whoever actually manages to hit the pins first gets to pick where we eat afterward. sound fair?”

LOCATION: the beach, early morning FOR: open!
THERE HAD BEEN A time when the idea of getting out of bed too early felt like a struggle, like there were weights attached to her body. and yet, as time moved forward, time really did heal certain wounds. not all of them, but it was a start -- as her therapist would say. she started taking beach runs the more she got used to her prosthetic, knowing to stay closer to the packed sand closer to the water -- but on this particular day, the sunrise was just so striking. it had been distracting to stay on her path but she had done it. and yet, the woman found herself seated on a towel nearby the ramp leading one back to the land. " didn't expect t'see you out here this early. " vida eventually speaks. her gaze doesn't appear angry, no. in fact, it's more surprise than anything -- considering she usually finds herself in calm, quiet isolation. the woman takes a swig from her water bottle before she speaks once more. " i just finished my run, if y'wanted to be alone. "
"what, and miss out on quality company?" he teased, tipping the cup in her direction. "i think i'd have to be pretty committed to solitude for that. contrary to popular belief, ma'am, i am not." his eyes briefly followed the towel she'd settled onto before landing back on her, soft with genuine curiosity. "how'd the run treat you?" he asked, leaning against the railing. "i've been trying to convince myself i came out here to be productive or something, but honestly..." he glanced back toward the horizon with a quiet laugh. “i saw the sky changing colors, grabbed a coffee, and damn near almost forgot i have to go to work in a bit.”

usually, it was only when summer was approaching that people signed up for the gym or fitness classes in droves, but even now, well into the season, jericho still found new sign ups for his dance classes in his inbox. mostly salsa. that had always been his bread and butter growing up, and what had once been a beloved hobby, and a way to meet new people, had become his job. not a career, but a way to keep doing something he loved while earning enough to get by. that was all jericho had ever wanted out of life: never to be stuck in a dead end nine to five office job, but to spend his days enjoying the things he loved.
the morning class had long since finished, its students filtering out into the day’s sunshine, a part of him twinging with jealousy. he was the type of person who thrived in the sun, someone who could spend hours beneath it, soaking up every ray. he was a summer baby, and it showed, especially when it came to the beach. there were twenty minutes before his next class, and while he waited, he couldn’t help but daydream about how he’d spend his upcoming break, probably heading down to the beach after stopping by sunset tacos.
mid daydream, his bubble burst at the sound of the dance studio door creaking open. “class doesn’t start for another twenty minutes. i hope that’s okay…” turning, he came to a stop, his hands settling on his hips. “i didn’t expect to see you here.”
reverie paused just inside the doorway, one hand still resting on the handle as she looked around the studio like she'd somehow wandered into someone else's dream by accident. her gaze drifted over the polished floors, the mirrored walls, the speaker tucked into the corner before landing on him. there was something familiar about his face, enough that she tilted her head for a second, trying to place it. someone she'd passed on the boardwalk? maybe she'd made jam for him once. whatever it was floated away as quickly as it had arrived. "oh," she said simply, a grin tugging at the corner of her mouth. "well...surprise. i guess."
she let the door swing shut behind her and wandered a few steps farther inside, rocking absentmindedly on the balls of her feet as she peeked around the room with open curiosity. "what kind of dancing are you teaching?" she asked, like she'd just remembered why she'd walked in to begin with. "i'm not gonna lie, i was just bored. someone outside said, 'class is in here,' and i said, 'cool.'" she lifted both shoulders in an easy shrug. "and here i am." it was delivered with complete sincerity, as though that was the most reasonable chain of events imaginable.
her attention flicked back to him, studying him for another beat before offering an apologetic little smile. "i should probably admit i don't actually know how to dance. unless enthusiastic flailing counts, in which case i'm basically a professional." a soft laugh escaped her. "but i do think dancing seems like one of those things people should do more often. like climbing trees or eating watermelon outside."
who: june 🙵 open. @palmviewstarters where: heights community center when: flower arranging event thingy.
〝 howdy! 〞 she chirps as someone approaches the table beside hers, nearly dropping the handful of baby's breath she'd been fluffing. a warm smile spreads across her face before glancing toward the collection of flowers between them. 〝 i've decided every flower needs a personality. 〞 the librarian lowers her voice as though sharing an important secret. 〝 like .. these peonies are the hopeless romantics, right? i mean, there's no way they ain't. meanwhile lavender definitely writes poetry. she always gives me beret girl, you know? 〞 june pauses, tilting her head thoughtfully towards a spray of snapdragons. 〝 these ones .. them i'm still tryin' to figure out. 〞 soft laughter, a stem extended to the other. 〝 help me decide? i promise i'm only sorta emotionally invested. 〞
the corners of her mouth tugged upward as she inspected the snapdragons. "they're a little chaotic, but in a trustworthy way. like…if you called them at two in the morning, they'd absolutely answer. they'd just show up wearing mismatched shoes because they left the house too fast." she looked back at june with a bright little smile, immediately slipping into the bit as though flower personalities were an entirely normal afternoon discussion. "you're right about the peonies, though. they're hopeless romantics for sure. and lavender definitely owns a journal she pretends nobody's allowed to read, even though she secretly hopes someone asks about it." she looked back to the snapdragons, "so…" she hummed thoughtfully. "do you think they're giving the friend who's always five minutes late because they stopped to help a turtle cross the road or got distracted talking to somebody's grandma at the grocery store."

"wait, did you just say you've never seen 'when death becomes her'?" nat couldn't believe her ears, it was a classic. honestly, she couldn't blame the other. not everyone was as crazy about movies as she was, sometimes she had to remind herself. "honestly, it's a classic! i own a dvd copy, i'll so let you borrow it. it's a must watch!" she mused, trying to hide just how much she truly loved this movie and the message behind it. truthfully, she was hoping her ears were deciving her.
nolan had one foot planted on the ladder and the other braced against the rung beneath it, arms stretched above his head as he wrestled with a stubborn stage light. dang thing had been trying his nerves all day. through it all, though, nat's enthusiasm pulled a crooked grin onto his face. "you really like this movie, huh?" he chuckled, shooting her a playful wink before turning back to the light fixture, giving it another twist that finally earned a satisfying click. "what's it about?" he asked, dusting his hands together as if he'd won some great battle. nolan gave the light a stern look just in case it was getting funny ideas. "don't get me wrong, i'm still gonna watch it, but..." he laughs again as `he adjusted the beam toward the stage. "it's kinda nice hearing you talk about it."
