summer was coming to an end. the air in midgar had began to chill, and despite your best efforts to keep the cold out of your apartment it had still managed to sneak it's way in.
usually on a day like this, you would be cuddled up in bed with your boyfriend. but unfortunately, he'd been away on a mission for two weeks already.
he tried his best to update you when possible, but it still wasn't quite as much as you'd like. you knew he was busy though, and tried not to pester him too much about it
you plopped down on the couch, letting out a sigh as your eyes traveled over your apartment. you were bored. and cold. so with not much else to do on a day like this and nothing planned you decided to curl up on the couch for a nap.
you kicked off your slippers, cacooning yourself in blankets as you settled in. sooner than expected, you'd slipped into a peaceful rest with only the quiet noise of the rain on the windows in the background
Â
you couldn't tell how much time had passed. you startled awake feeling a hand in your hair. your eyes shot open, only for a steadying voice to cut through your momentary fear
“relax. it's only me.” sephiroth muttered. having apparently slipped in the front door while you slept. he was still in uniform, only missing his sword “you were sleeping so soundly, I almost feel bad for waking you.”
“you're home?” you stammered, trying to push yourself up onto your elbows. his free hand came to your chest, easing you back down. at some point while you slept, he'd maneuvered you so your head was on his lap
“I am. the mission was cut short because of the rain.” he said softly, brushing the hair out of your face. his serpentine eyes lingered on your face for a long moment until he spoke again “I came home as soon as I could. there was little else on my mind except you.”
his hand slid around to your back, pulling you up just a bit. he leaned down his hair falling around his face as he brought his lips to your forehead. he kissed the warm skin there, then your temple and cheek.
“sephiroth.” you murmured, chiding him half heartedly “I'm a mess right now. I haven't brushed my hair or-” you began to protest, only for him to cut you off
“I've been away for two weeks. if you think I care about something as trivial as that you're sorely mistaken” he muttered, planting another kiss to the tip of your nose “I missed you. so so much.” he added, his voice taking a desperate edge you rarely heard from him. it instantly evaporated any sort of insecurity or hesitation you had in mind.
“come. let's get you to bed. it's not good to sleep on the couch like this” his arms slid under you, hoisting you up from the couch. you bristled from the cold air, snuggling closer to your lover
“you should have called. I would've made you something to eat, or at least greeted you at the door.” you muttered into his neck
he let out a slight huff, the closest thing to a laugh most would hear from him. one of his hands ran up and down your back soothingly as he pushed open the door to your shared bedroom with his hip.
“I'm very capable of taking care of myself.” he reassured, planting another kiss on the top of your head before he laid you down on the bed. “i’ll be back in just a minute”
you watched admiringly as he stripped out of his uniform, laying the leather garment on the back of a nearby chair to be cleaned later.
he disappeared into the bathroom for a short while. you let yourself settle into the familiar comfort of your bed while you waited.
when he returned his hair was still damp, and instead of his uniform he work a pair of sweats that hung low on his hips. he didn't reach for a shirt, which made you internally rejoice.
he slid into bed next to you, slipping under the covers. his chest pressed against your back as he curled his large frame around you. he pressed the lightest of kisses to the top of your head, inhaling the scent of your hair.
“you're always so warm.” he said gruffly, his arm slipping around your waist to tug you closer. you twisted in his arms, enough to see his pretty face. his cheeks warmed under your gaze, the faint pink flush barely visible in the low light of your bedroom
your gaze softened as you took him in. he looked tired, which was expected after such a long mission.
“you should sleep.” you whispered, pressing a kiss to his jaw. his arm tightened around you and despite clearing wanting to do more, he relented with a small sigh
“I know.” he replied, pulling the blanket tighter around the both of you “but… don't make any plans for the morning.” he added, his voice a heated promise.
a small giggle escaped you. and after you settled your head against his chest the two of you slipped into a peaceful rest with the promise of a fun morning at the forefront of your mind.
