"Whitney: Were school dances popular?

Grandma: Well when I was in high school they started having, what we they called. Sock hops. It was records or the radio it would usually be at like a women’s club and it would be on a Saturday from like 7-10 and you’d just go in and dance in our sock. You would do the twist or the mashed potato or the jitter bug and that was fun."

"Whitney: What about hair styles?

Grandma: Well that’s changed a lot, well back then we would use bobby pins to curl our hair or we would get perms and I got a perm twice a year, then they came out with these brush curlers and you sleep in those. I kept my hair short, as I got older I had long hair, wore it in a French twist with all the curls on top, and later on I got it cut and started wearing it shorter and through the years it’s just gotten shorter and shorter, and back than they would have clips that had pearls on it and give decoration to your hair. People would put flowers in their hair and stuff like that."

"Whitney: Did you do any activities during school?

Grandma: I bowled,

Whitney: Did you all have a uniform for that?

Grandma: no… we just wore...

Whitney: You bowled in skirts?

Grandma: yeah we bowled in skirts, we did that once a week after school."
