“You tease…”

“You love that about me. It keeps you on your toes.”

“By all means, love. Please continue.”

“Oh but you said that flattery gets me nowhere. Maybe I should give up?”

“Flattery will get you nowhere, but please, continue.”

“You haven’t even heard the best of my flattery.”

“Tybalt ate my bloody slippers!” He growled, holding the shredded footwear in one hand and a very guilty hell-pup under his other arm. “All the bones and guts he can nibble on and play with, and he chooses my slippers.”

“He has excellent taste,” Lilith said from her place on the bed. Juliet looked up at the sound of Tybalt squirming. She gave a small growl, reprimanding him as Lilith laughed at the situation. “Maybe he’s gotten sick of the taste of sycophants and cowards?”

“Oh, come on! That’s hardly fair!”

He sighed, defeated. “You, always, my love. She was good when she was, but I think you and I both know that my interests have shifted and my tastes have matured since then.”

“Do you remember that night in the crossroads. You became a better man that night.”

“Oh, come on! That’s hardly fair!”

“I have never claimed to be fair. What’s the answer?”

He gave her a look; something soft and meaningful and meant only for her and saved for only the private moments between them. His hand raised and stretched out to her in an invitation.  “I wouldn’t dream of it, love.”

“Good. I need my King.”

The last thing he wanted at that moment was another fight.

“Don’t make me doubt it.” It seemed like a command, but it was more of a plea, in her own Lilith-y way.

His brows furrowed, taken aback by her question. “Nothing’s changed!” Crowley’s shoulders squared reflexively, gearing for what raised voices between them usually meant.

“Then say it to me. Three little words that you’ve said before. Prove me wrong.” She kept her voice level, calm for the moment. So far things were civil between them, but she braced herself for a sudden change.

He faltered for a moment. His mouth moving with vague noises that sounded like the beginnings of failed sentences before he pursed his lips and sighed, with an almost pleading expression that begged her not to make him do it.

She was never one to make things easy for him. Some of their largest fights were due to their stubborn nature and their inability to back down. She crossed her arms, “When did it change?”

“Look me in the eye and say it.”
