how do you feel about bad endings?
im a sucker for bad endings. i find it extremely cathartic and it stays in my mind for way longer than happy endings, imagining how the characters could've been happier and heal but unfortunately they just couldnt reach it. because it stays for so much longer in my head, it also ends up making me think about the story's message for longer and uncover things i would've never thought about again if the story had a happy ending.
but i know lots of people DESPISE bad endings. the worst they'll accept is bittersweet, but bad endings are unacceptable. some people even count is as a writing error.
i do not count as a writing error and i do think, even tho everyone's entiteled to personal taste, saying your ending should be satisfying in the way that it should be happy and the characters should be reworded is just wrong. but i wanted to know just how unpopular bad endings are between tumblr writers and hitsukarin fans.
how do you feel about bad endings? do you enjoy them? do they make you feel like the whole story was not worth it? be as angry or passionate as you need, i need to understand how will my writing style be faced by the audience
Tips for Writing Trauma!
i love you all and i need you to stop writing trauma as a single breakdown scene in the rain after which the character is Healed and Ready to Love Again. that is NOT trauma :(
⊹ Trauma doesn't announce itself. it shows up as your character suddenly not being able to eat a specific food, or going very quiet in a loud room, or laughing at the wrong moment because their nervous system decided that was the appropriate response. it's mundane and weird and it makes no sense from the outside. the dramatic flashback sequence is the least realistic part. the most realistic part is your character suddenly needing to leave a grocery store for a reason they can't articulate.
⊹ The body keeps score and it keeps it in the strangest places. a particular smell. the quality of light at a certain time of day. a tone of voice that sounds like someone who hurt them. your traumatised character doesn't think "this reminds me of the bad thing." their heart rate spikes and they don't know why. they feel wrong and they can't locate the feeling. they're irritable for three days and only later, if ever, do they make the connection. write the disconnection. it's more honest.
⊹ trauma also does not make people universally sympathetic and wise. it makes some people controlling. some people funny at inappropriate times. some people very good in a crisis and completely unable to handle a normal day. some people are generously kind to strangers and absolutely terrible to people they love. trauma shapes behaviour in contradictory, inconvenient ways that don't resolve into a lesson. your traumatised character can be difficult to like. that's not a flaw in the writing. that's the WRITING.
⊹ Healing is not linear and it is not a destination. your character does not get better and stay better. they have a good month and then something small undoes two years of progress and they have to start again with slightly more tools than before. that's the actual shape of it. the spiral, not the arc. the scene where they finally open up and cry is not the end. it might not even be progress. sometimes it just means they were tired that night.
Ways to write Slow Burn Romance!!
┈୨୧┈ Give them reasons they CAN'T be together that aren't just manufactured drama. Not miscommunication. Not love triangles. Not arbitrary "I push people away" trauma with no real exploration. Give them REAL obstacles: they're on opposite sides of a conflict, timing is wrong, there are actual consequences to being together, they have incompatible life goals, there's a power imbalance they need to resolve first. The obstacles should be meaningful and require actual character growth to overcome, not just a conversation.
┈୨୧┈ Make the friendship foundation SO STRONG that readers ship them before the romance even starts. They should genuinely LIKE each other. They should have inside jokes. They should seek each other out just to hang out. They should trust each other. They should have fun together. When the romantic feelings start developing, it should feel like "oh no, I don't want to ruin this friendship" because the friendship is genuinely valuable. Readers should be able to believe they'd still choose to be in each other's lives even if romance never happened.
┈୨୧┈ Let the tension BUILD in layers over time. First they notice each other. Then they start seeking excuses to be near each other. Then they start getting jealous. Then they start having Moments. Then they start thinking about each other constantly. Then comes the almost-kisses. Then the accidental intimacy. Then the barely-hidden feelings. Each phase should have time to breathe before moving to the next level. Slow burn means SLOW - readers should be desperate for them to get together LONG before they actually do.
┈୨୧┈ Show how they change each other gradually. He starts smiling more because of her. She becomes braver because he believes in her. They adopt each other's habits and phrases. They start to see the world differently because of the other person's influence. Slow burn is about showing two people gradually becoming essential to each other's lives. They should be woven into each other's character development, not separate from it.
┈୨୧┈ Make the payoff WORTH the wait. After chapters or books of tension, the moment they finally get together should be EARNED and SATISFYING. A CONVERSATION where they're finally honest. A moment where they choose each other despite the obstacles. A confession that feels like a dam breaking. The first kiss should feel like the conclusion of a long journey and the beginning of something new. Readers have been waiting for this, so make it count. Make it feel like YES, THIS WAS WORTH IT.

Steal from everything you love. watched a movie and thought "wow that scene hit different"? figure out why and use it. read a book where the banter made you kick your feet? study it. saw a tiktok that made you Feel Things? that's research. keep a notes app full of random lines you'll never use. screenshot tumblr posts at 4am for "inspiration." your influences should be obvious and chaotic. remix everything. that's not theft that's apprenticeship.
🍖 How to Build a Culture Without Just Inventing Spices and Necklaces
(a worldbuilding roast. with love.)
So. You’re building a fantasy world, and you’ve just invented: → Three types of ceremonial jewelry → A spice that tastes like cinnamon if it were bitter and cursed → A holiday where everyone wears gold and screams at dawn
Cute. But that’s not culture. That’s aesthetics.
And if your worldbuilding is all outfits, dances, and spice blends with vaguely mystical names, your story’s probably going to feel like a cosplay convention held inside a Pinterest board.
Here’s how to fix that—aka: how to build a real, functioning culture that shapes your story, not just its vibes.
─────── ✦ ───────
🔗 Culture Is Built on Power, Not Just Style
Ask yourself: → Who’s in charge, and why? → Who has land? Who doesn’t? → What’s considered taboo, sacred, or punishable by death?
Culture is shaped by who gets to make the rules and who gets crushed by them. That’s where things like religion, family structure, class divisions, gender roles, and social expectations actually come from.
Start there. Not at the embroidery.
─────── ✦ ───────
2.🪓 Culture Comes From Conflict
Did this society evolve peacefully? Was it colonized? Did it colonize? Was it rebuilt after a war? Is it still in one?
→ What was destroyed and mythologized? → What do the survivors still whisper about? → What do children get taught in school that’s… suspiciously sanitized?
No culture is neutral. Every tradition has a history, and that history should taste like blood, loss, or propaganda.
─────── ✦ ───────
3.🧠 Belief Systems > Customs Lists
Sure, rituals and holidays are cool. But what do people believe about: → Death? → Love? → Time? → The natural world? → Justice?
Example: A society that believes time is cyclical vs. one that sees time as linear will approach everything—from prison sentences to grief—completely differently.
You don’t need to invent 80 gods. You need to know what those gods mean to the people who pray to them.
─────── ✦ ───────
4.🫀 Culture Controls Behavior (Quietly)
Culture shows up in: → What people apologize for → What insults cut deepest → What people are embarrassed about → What’s praised publicly vs. what’s hidden privately
For instance: → A culture obsessed with stoicism won’t say “I love you.” They’ll say “Have you eaten?” → A culture built on legacy might prioritize ancestor veneration, archival writing, name inheritance.
This stuff? Way more immersive than giving everyone matching earrings.
─────── ✦ ───────
5. 🏠 Culture = Daily Life, Not Just Festivals
Sure, your MC might attend a funeral where people paint their faces blue. But what about: → Breakfast routines? → How people greet each other on the street? → Who cooks, and who eats first? → What’s considered “clean” or “proper”? → How is parenting handled? Divorce?
Culture is what happens between plot points. It should shape your character’s assumptions, language, fears, and habits—whether or not a festival is going on.
─────── ✦ ───────
6. 💬 Let Your Characters Disagree With Their Own Culture
A culture isn’t a monolith.
Even in deeply traditional societies, people: → Rebel → Question → Break rules → Misinterpret laws → Mock sacred things → Act hypocritically → Weaponize or resist what’s expected
Let your characters wrestle with the culture around them. That’s where realism (and tension) lives.
─────── ✦ ───────
7.🧼 Beware the “Pretty = Good” Trap
Worldbuilding gets boring fast when: → The protagonist’s homeland is beautiful and pure → The enemy’s culture is dark and “barbaric” → Every detail just reinforces who the reader should like
You can—and should—challenge the aesthetic hierarchy. → Let ugly things be beloved. → Let beautiful things be corrupt. → Let your MC romanticize their culture and then get disillusioned by it later.
─────── ✦ ───────
📍 TL;DR (but like, spicy): → Culture is not food and jewelry. → Culture is power, fear, memory, contradiction. → Stop inventing spices until you know who starved last winter. → Let your world feel lived in, not curated.
The best cultural worldbuilding doesn’t look like a list. It feels like a system. A pressure. A presence your characters can’t escape—even if they try.
Now go. Build something real. (You can add spices later.)

karin's path hurts deeply too!!
hitsugaya had it tough, im not trying to compare. but karin's path is also very interesting once you imagine bleach from the kurosaki family's perspective.
first, the kids lose their mother. the anime states karin never cried even once after her mom died, she felt like she needed to be strong for her siblings and not to worry her father. she wanted to keep everyone's spirits up even when herself was grieving.
then, at the age of, idk, twelve? her brother goes missing. the grief of a missing loved one is very different from the grief of someone who has died, many would say is somehow worse. because the pain for the deads is stable. there's nothing you can do, it stays the same everyday. you'll never forget them, you'll always mourn them. but if you have no expectation of change, eventually you'll get used to that feeling.
the pain of a missing person is not stable at all. it's a constant and never ending anxiety, wondering if there will be any news, if there's something more you could be doing to find them. you have no idea if they're safe, if they're in pain, if they're somewhere being abused. you worry about them constantly, and you worry that any day might be their last. you can't get used to something unstable. it doesn't start to get better until enough time passes that you can be almost certain they're really gone.
the first time we watch Karin cry in the anime (aside for when she was overwhelmed with the memories of that kid soul trapped in a bird in the early seasons) is when she asks Toshiro about her brother. this can definitely be connected to her grief for her mother and the anxiety of possibly losing the strongest pillar of her family for a second time, just when the wounds from the first time were finally starting to heal.
i love hitsukarin because their paths teach the opposite lesson.
karin's path is filled with deep love and devastating, fatal loss. it teaches that love is unsafe and threatening, not because people mean harm, but because people are fragile. to love someone is to agreed in grieving them.
toshiro's path, on the other hand, is filled with rejection, failure, sacrifice, fear and betrayal. it doesnt teach that he was born unable to love, but that he was, somehow, born unfit to carry someone else's love. he is allowed to love, but only at a distance. to allow someone to love him is to sign up for an agreement he knows he was born with no ways to fulfill.
love, to Karin, is a curse that is ultimately doomed to end the same way regardless of anybody's wishes. love to hitsugaya is like thin glass that his hands are too unsteady to hold.
They’re waiting for the hollows 🤭

how is hitsugaya's path so overlooked?
it has SO MUCH material for angst
he grew up being despised by every person in his neighbourhood except for his sister and his grandma. he was dispised to the point that even shopkeepers would refuse to give his change directly on his hands because they were disgusted and didn't want to touch him.
he had no interest in the shinigami academy and refused to leave home when recruited by Rangiku because he wanted to stay and live taking care of his grandma, only to find out that his very presence is what was making her sick, only reinforcing that the neighbours were right to avoid him like a plague.
he made his first real friend in life at the Shinigami Academy, a friend for whom he was willing to give up on graduating as a Shinigami, only to be betrayed by him and forced to watch him die. from then on, he forever wielded the sword that, had things gone the way he wished, would've belonged to his friend.
he had to fight his own sister (the first person who cared about him and, for a long time, the only one) because her capitain left behind a phostumous letter, instructing her to murder him. from his perspective, even someone who grew up with him and loved him as much as Hinamori was able to believe he could be dangerous.
later on, he stabs his sister and watches her bleed out in his arms, barely surviving by a hair.
everything that happened to Toshiro throughout his lifetime only reinforced the first message the world gave him: he is dangerous to the ones he love, and no matter his good intentions, he is undeserving of belonging, as his presence inevitably brings pain no matter if he's trying to be something good.
i NEED a fanfiction that explores the impacts of this learning history. this repeated pattern of being allowed to love every once in a life time -> trying to protect this loved one -> becoming the reason why they suffer.
i NEED a fanfiction that explores what it means to grow up with so little human warmth, to be physically avoided by everyone except than his family.
i need Karin to be the first to willingly offer him a warm, heartfelt and sincere hug and i need him to shiver when it happens. i need him to fear nothing but love, because love was the only place in his life where his strenght never guaranteed safety.
im asexual, my smut is suffering. i need people crying and tearing at their faces under the weight of their own emotions.
Karin also has a lot of angst material (her brother going missing just when she was recovered from her mothers death, and the fact that the anime states that she never cried again after Masaki died but she cried while asking toshiro if he knew where was ichigo) but thats for another day
right before the thousand year blood war—karin just wants him to come back to her alive thank you em and abby for always making hitsukarin content <3 its about time i joined the bandwagon
