MINORS DNI/SHORT FLASHBACK TO N*CON/DEAD DOVE DO NOT EAT
Retired war hero Midoriya Izuku rubs his eyes, after another sleepless night of familiar dreams, paying attention to his best friend was taking all the energy he could muster.Ā
āAthena doesnāt want a hero,ā Iida snaps, taking his glasses off to pinch the bridge of his nose, āShe wants a gullible madman, whoād do anything for a shred of,ā he gestures wildly, āGreatness,ā he says finally, lifting his dark eyes to meet his friend. āI can tell by your face you arenāt listening to me.ā He says, more calmly.Ā
āWhat are heroes?ā Midoriya says, smiling guiltily, āIf not, at least a little mad?ā He stretched his broad tanned shoulders. āAnd maybe, this will bring me closer to the girl, the one Iāve been dreaming about?āĀ
āNo one,ā Iida says, standing, āHas ever returned from attempting to slay Medusa, and yet her singing continues to lure ships to the rocks, weāve lost an eighth of the fleet.ā He rakes his hand through his dark hair. āAnd the woman in your dreams will come to you of her own volition, if the gods see fit to send her to you.
āSomeone,ā Midoriya argues, āWill be the person to kill her, why not me? Athena has given me her blessing to seek out the beast.āĀ
āAthena has chosen many.ā Iida retorts. āMortals bleed, regardless of a godās favor, sometimes, I think a gods favor veritably assures it.ā Somewhere in the distance, thunder rolls and Iida waves a dismissive hand out the window. āTheyāre angry because Iām right.ā He paces to the window and looks out over the city, carved into the side of a mountain, Iidaās office overlooked the brightest white walls, down to a sparkling sea. āItās a clear day,ā he says, āYou can see her tower.āĀ
Midoriya follows his gaze out across the shimmering blue waters, and itās true, in the distant haze you can just make out the grey tower of stone.Ā
āDo you think the stories are true?ā He asks his friend, reaching out and touching Iidaās shoulder. āThat she was a common woman once, before being cursed?ā Iida sighs.Ā
āShe wasnāt a common woman.ā He adjusts his glasses, turning from the sea, āShe was a witch, like Circe.ā A cold breeze finds its way through the window. āIf she could, sheād turn every man to stone.ā He cleans his lense. āAt least, thatās what the stories say.āĀ
āWho tells the stories?ā The breeze in the room picks up Iidaās papers and scatters them to the floor.Ā
