Why it’s such an esfp song: This is a good song about the duality of the esfp. Most people forget that their secondary function is Fi. they struggle with a lot of darkness and strong personal emotions. and they cope, usually, with risk-taking.

Isfp: Jenny

Most isfp lyric: “Hi-diddle-dee-dee, goddamn! The pirate’s life for me!”

Why it’s such an isfp song: combining unrivaled cuteness “hi-diddle-dee-dee” with unparalleled badassery-pirates!- is the isfp trademark. Also motorcycles are pretty isfp.

Istp: Going to Georgia

Most istp quote“ The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you, and that you’re standing in the doorway.”

Why it’s an istp song: this is the ultimate istp love ballad right here folks. an istp would absolutely drive, buzzing with adrenaline and carrying a fucking weapon for some reason, hundreds of miles to get to the one they love. And also the above quote is precisely the kind of awkward, unpoetic, and utterly adorable way an istp would describe being in love.

Estp: See America Right

Most Estp quote: “My love is like a cyclone in a swamp, and the weather’s getting warmer”

Why it’s such an estp song: Dating an estp would be exactly the same as dating a tornado and also they are the type most likely to be really drunk on public transport.

Isfj: Love, Love, Love

Why it’s such an isfp song: Isfps are made of love. They want to find something, or someone, to love in life, and then love it with all of their being. They contribute more raw, pure love into the world than maybe any other type.

Why it’s an intp song: This is a good song about specifically the kind of emotionalisolation which is common to intps. Their inner world, though more wondrous than most people could imaginable, is labyrinthian. Within their palace of Ti, the intps are comfortable in themselves, but they often have trouble rendering their world in terms others will understand, often creating the exact kind of frustrated alienation which this song expresses.

Entp: High Hawk Season

Why It’s an entp song: So, as we all know, entps are brilliant, shiny alien creatures whichare only amusing themselves on earth temporarily-experimenting, seeing what they can do with this weird little mud ball. One day they will one day be tractor beamed back up to their home planet of Ne. This song appeals to the literally “out of this world” quality of the entp. Plus, entps are really into quirky, weird, innovative stuff, and this song is so much all of of those things.

Enfp: The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton

The most enfp lyric: “When you punish a person for dreaming his dream, don’t expect him to thank or forgive you. The best ever death metal band out of Denton will in time both outpace and outlive you.”

Why it’s such an enfp song: Enfps are the type Most Likely to Have a High School Band. They are prone to authority problems and grand artistic ambitions. And, like Jeff and Cyrus, though the more cynical of us might mock the enfps or try to bring them closer to earth, they’ll get the last laugh and the most fun.

Infp: Riches and Wonders

Why it’s an infp song: This song appeals to the sense of longing which permeates the whole life of the infp. The sense of longing, the sense of seeking a beauty just out of reach. Also this is the only Mountain Goats song that makes me cry literally every damn time I hear it, so I think that kind of crippling bittersweetness applies to infps as well.

Intj: Answering the Phone

Why it’s an intj song: This is like, the anthem of the embittered intj. I think it really shows the kind of two poles the intj struggles with: being really tough, and being really misunderstood.

Entj: Prowl Great Cain

Why it’s an entj song: Here we see an Entj doing what they do best, dredging up their inferior Fi to pick the scab of something they did in the past. But you wouldn’t know it fromthe outside- because the Entj presses onward, as the song says, guilty but not ashamed.Entjs are ambitious, and the ambitious all too often have to make tough decisions withthe potential to haunt them forever.

Infj: Palmcorder Yajna

Why it’s an infj song: infjs struggle with a lot of existential angst about their purpose in the narrative of the world, and are plagued by a constant feeling of yearning for some greater role to fill, which is a lot of what this song is about. They are also apt to see symbols and omens in life and their past, even in mundane things, and they can dwell on the meaning of dreams and the subconscious.

per their entry on wckrspgt.com, Live performances brought John Darnielle into the mix to add his drumming prowess and vocals to the beautiful harmonies that made Chicken Damage an exciting stage act. Stopped prematurely in 1994 with several songs unreleased.

while revisiting them the other day, i found this rly cool version of furniture store— this masterful reimagining of furniture huschle’s original track is the same arrangement that the mountain goats play live, which gave rise to the fateful legend of the tuttlingen warriors, which gave rise to a name for a small community of mountain goats fans here !! the second part of the song, however, is not a part of this arrangement, as it is a selection from this goddamn brady bunch song 

There’s only one comment about this song on songmeanings. It reads “there’s definitely more to this song than the lyrics might immediately indicate. no idea what it’s really about, though.” I’m here to tell you what it’s really about. 

Based on the the first verse and chorus you might think this is your standard run of the mill kinda funny/jokey old tmg song. Then the second verse immediately turns that thought on it’s head with very somber lyrics.

and then the cold sorrow gripped me by the throat and then i felt the colder sadness taking hold

So what is this song actually about? What do delicious pastries have to do with cold sorrow and sadness?  This song is about a diabetic who bought and ate a sugary pastry and soon realized that they were going into a diabetic coma. The narrator does not have any insulin left and can’t go out to get more or to a hospital because they are in the middle of a snowstorm, as described in the song’s final verse. To support this theory we can look at the stark difference between the first and final two verses. The lyrics in the first verse describe the narrator taking actions, “I eased it out and I brought it home”. The last two verses contain no action words at all. In the second verse the narrator describes how he’s feeling and in the final verse the narrator is simply stating what they see. The transition between taking actions and just witnessing their surroundings is likely because the narrator is losing consciousness as the ketones build up in their blood.

Now let’s examine the chorus. The first chorus reads:

why don’t you try some I already had some myself is that the most delicious thing you ever tasted in your life is that the most delicious thing you ever tasted in your life

The second chorus has one small difference in the lyrics. The second line is replaced with a repetition of the first. I believe the chorus describes the circumstances leading up to purchasing and eating the pastry. I believe the first chorus occurs before the narrator realizes they are going into a diabetic coma and the lyrics may be the words a friend of the narrator said to them to convince them to buy the sugar filled deathtrap. Perhaps the narrator had a bite of his friend’s and decided to buy one to eat at home.

Let’s look at the second verse again. The first line “ and then the cold sorrow gripped me by the throat ” describes the shortness of breath that commonly occurs before going into a diabetic coma. This is when the narrator realizes they are about to go into a diabetic coma and then feels “the colder sadness taking hold” when they realize they are out of insulin and will likely die. The third line of this verse “I knew I had to have it for my own” is the narrator blaming themself for buying their own pastry after tasting a bite of someone else’s. 

The the song then goes into the second chorus where the narrator looks back at the events that led to this situation. Assuming my my belief that chorus is the words of the narrator’s friend (or even perhaps someone who works at the bakery, simply trying to make a sale) is correct, the repetition of the first line could be the narrator shifting the blame of themself to this person. The first two lines also sound very bitter or mocking when they are sung, which is worth noting as it suggests that the narrator regrets that those words were said.

Now the final verse:

and then I saw the snow against the window and then i saw the snow hit the window and then I saw the snow brush against the window and then I saw the snow again

This verse shows the final thing the narrator sees before he fully loses consciousness. The building up of the snow described in this verse not only serves as a reason to the listener as why the narrator couldn’t go out and get insulin, but also to parallel the build up in the narrator’s own metabolism. When this verse finishes you’re almost expecting a third chorus to be sung afterwards but there isn’t which further supports the theory that the narrator passed out and eventually died.

“I am no botanist, and do not know what kind of tree a sunset tree is“  -  The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler

I created this (gathered this? compiled this?) as a Christmas gift for my sister. I thought I might share it here as well. Technically still a work in progress. If you think I fucked up and totally chose the wrong version of This Year or whatever, feel free to shoot me a message.

Many people believe this is a Christmas song, which is an easy mistake to make since it is on a compilation of Christmas songs and at first glance does seem to be about things that happen around Christmastime including being visited by a supposed Santa Claus or someone similar . What John Darnielle is actually doing in this song is using the Christian co-optation of the pagan ritual at solstice as a metaphor for an alien invasion. The narrator of this song is not in fact a stable boy, but an alien who has landed on Earth with his mother and they are waiting for their people to come to Earth to rescue them and/or colonize Earth. The aliens are disguised as humans and live on a secluded farm not only to minimize contact with other people but it also gives them an ample supply of the food that their alien bodies need to survive, straw. With this theory in mind let’s examine these lyrics verse by verse  and we will see clearly that this is just another Mountain Goats song about aliens and not really about Christmas at all.

Here come the times of changing tide Here come the days of light and grace Here come the hours of wordless wondrousness Light, light will fill this humble place

Sure that first line could be referencing the new year that’s just around the corner but do things really change around Christmas time/new years? No, things keep on keeping on like they always do. You know what would really bring about a changing of the tides? An alien invasion that would finally reunite the young alien narrator with his own species. The second line of this verse might be about all the Christmas lights and cheery attitudes that pop up this time of year but more likely is pertaining to the bright light that is commonly believed to emanate  from alien spacecrafts. The mention of grace here refers to the joy the narrator would feel finally meeting people of his home planet. Since the narrator is disguised as a human boy it is quite possible he was born on the ship or on Earth and has no connection besides his mother to his home planet so meeting his species would be graceful indeed. There are a lot of words that can be used to describe Christmas, but “wordless” is not one of them. Everyone seems to start talking about Christmas as soon as Thanksgiving is over and there are thousands of Christmas songs being played on the radio and elsewhere, as well as carolers who spew the words of these songs repeatedly. Hmm so what could this line mean, what would leave someone in wordless wondrousness? Oh yeah being stranded on a strange foreign planet for years and then finally being reunited with your own people with a possible chance to return to the planet that you’ve spent your whole life dreaming of. The light mentioned in the last line again refers to the bright bright lights of an alien ship and could also be a metaphor for the lifting of the dark cloud of loneliness and homesickness that has plagued the narrator ever since he could remember.

Now let’s look at the chorus.

When you come the stars will shine brighter than spun gold When you come the world will seem shiny and new My mom told me that someday someone like you would come to set things right Until you come I’ll keep this place ready for you

When the aliens first arrive their ships will look like extremely bright stars in the night sky which explains the first line. The world will seem shiny and new because the narrator knew his whole life that there was a whole planet and culture out there that he was missing out on and now he can finally be a part of it . The narrator’s mother knew their species would come for them eventually, or at least hoped it and shared these thoughts with her son.  The word “someday” in this chorus is what really convinces me this song is not about Christmas. Would you describe Christmas as something that will happen someday? That makes it seem like it’s a once in a lifetime event, not something that happens annually. So what is once in a lifetime event? You got it, aliens coming to rescue you from a life filled with the misery of not really knowing who you are or where you come from. Also if the “you” in this song is supposed to be Santa Claus would you say to your child “someone like Santa Claus will come”? Not likely. You’d just say “Santa Claus is coming.” The aliens coming back for the stable boy and his mother will be “setting things right”. The last line in the chorus seems to indicate that this alien invasion of earth is not a rescue mission but the beginning of a process to colonize Earth and suggests the narrator and his mother were sent to this planet in advance to gather information and get the lay of the land.

And now the last verse.

I saw them riding up the road And I swept and scrubbed the stable twice Filled it with golden yellow straw, sweet and clean I did my best to make things nice

Finally! The aliens have landed in a nearby field and are approaching the home of a boy who has been searching for them his entire life. The narrator is so excited that the day he’d been dreaming of for years has actually arrived and he makes sure the stable is as clean and welcoming as can be. The narrator describes the straw as sweet which human taste buds might disagree with. This suggests that straw is a key source of food for this alien species and that they find it scrumptious as well. This is why the young anxious alien filled the stable with straw, to provide his long sought after family with a feast they rightfully deserve after a journey that was surely long and arduous. 

Conclusion: This song has nothing to do with Christmas and the narrator did his best to make things nice. For the alien invasion and colonization of Earth.
