i made a post a while back talking about the lack of parents in Soul Eater, and in that i had a realization that Black☆Star and Tsubaki have very similar backstories conceptually and i would like to explore that more in this post.
both of them come from families that are very infamous for their line of work: the Nakatsukasa clan having their special multi-form weapons, and the Star clan being ruthless assassins. their respective families have their own reputation, though those reputations have wildly different connotations. they are both the only ones that can continue on their family name, they carry the burden of decades of their family's legacy, and yet they are both defying those legacies in a way.
Black☆Star's meant to be a ruthless assassin, someone who is willing to do anything for any sum of money, and someone who will do anything for power. even though Black☆Star's whole thing is he's trying to surpass god and whatnot, he is abandoning the "i will do it by any means necessary" thing. also, he's admittedly a shitty assassin for a while (not fighter, he's obviously extremely strong, i mean SPECIFICALLY the act of being a sneaky, silent assassin). he's doing things his own way, he's not going to be told what to do, and he's going to do it as loudly as he sees fit.
Tsubaki was seemingly crushed underneath the weight of her bloodline's legacy. her own identity problems stem from the fact that she feels that she has no defining characteristics and that she is lending herself and her powers out to others. that's what she is "meant" to do as the member of the Nakatsukasa family with multi-weapon form ability. she feels like she must put herself to the side to better serve her meister and be a better weapon.
their partnership almost feels sacrilegious: the "heir," so to speak, of the Nakatsukasa abilities with the last remaining member of the killer Star clan. their families are seemingly on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to honor and morality (at least from what family history we're given), and yet they work extremely well together. Black☆Star even masters the form of the shadow sword, which literally claimed many many lives that tried to master it before him.
by being partners, they are defying the paths that were set out for them by the simple act of choosing each other. they also pretty much affirm the parts about themselves that they're trying to prove to the world. thinking about when they first meet and partner up, Tsubaki fully listens to Black☆Star's whole deal, and Black☆Star talks to her out of respect, not because she's part of the Nakatsukasa clan. they saw each other as people, not their family histories.
i like the idea that someday, somewhere down the line, someone encounters them while they're on a mission. the person doesn't know what they're up against, but they recognize Black☆Star's tattoo and they're like "oh man, Star clan, i thought all of those guys were dead. guess i'm in for a rough ride." and then they see him wielding Tsubaki, watching her change form, probably using the shadow sword, and then they're really like "okay wtf did i just get myself into" because they know the history of these two families, but they don't know Black☆Star and Tsubaki, and they don't know what they're capable of together because there's never been a partnership quite like theirs.

inspired by my own thoughts LOL one of the questions on the Soul Eater ask board that's been passed around asked which of your favorite characters would you turn into a villian (or something like that) and so i ran w/ that a while ago and haven't stopped thinking about it. scenario is that after Crona's put on Lord Death's list, Maka leaves the Spartoi to defend Crona and try to help them before the others can get to them (i got into the idea a bit more here)
also, this was one of the WIPs i mentioned that got deleted in The Incident. i luckily was able to be scrappy and resourceful and bring this piece back from the dead, but my sketches for tomorrow also got deleted so i Most Likely won't have anything to post tomorrow even though i love that prompt </3

fun fact, i accidentally deleted like half of my Soul Eater art off on Procreate and this piece was included in what was lost 🫡 luckily i had already exported it onto my camera roll, but yeah this image is all that's left of it. my piece for day 6 was ALSO deleted and it wasn't finished, but life finds a way and i frankensteined it back to life

ik i've said it before, but i'm an English major!! i have a "writing emphasis" and i'm planning on pursuing a master's in creative writing after i graduate. after that, i hope to continue writing just about any and everything. i love fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, so that's what i mainly do, but i'd love to expand my horizons (a fun dream of mine would be to work as a writer for a video game one day). right now, i'm really digging magical realism
i love LEGOS!!!! i wish they weren't a million dollars!!!! i would be an unstoppable force if i had a supply of LEGO sets to do all the time. every day i yearn for the boutique hotel set that i probably will never get because it's so expensive
there's an embarrassing amount of movies, shows, and games that i've never partaken in!!! i'll admit i must be horrible to make small talk with for people without funky brains because i don't watch shows or movies in my free time, i watch multiple hour long video essays about things i've never heard of. there's a lot of shows and movies i simply refuse to ever watch that people think are cultural phenomena, there's a lot of others that i haven't seen and the fact that people tell me that they're good makes me somehow violently resistant to partaking in it (this is sort of a small one that's related; i love video games, but i rarely play them!!! i'm super bad at them and i usually play for story much more than gameplay, so it's easier for me to watch someone play them so i can absorb the game)

sorry for the insanely depressing edit. my friend on insta sent me this song and was like "this with moon Crona" and i became inconsolable. i had to spread the image to everyone else.
showing one of the wildest panels w/ foreshadowing i remembered while looking through the manga for one of my long posts
this happens during Medusa's fight with Justin (and then Tezca comes in) and this is right after Justin's like "oh, Tzeca, is that you?" and Tezca spouts this line about how a person's death is up to them and that he's just reflecting their lives up until now.
and Medusa just . . . SEES Crona when talking about how a person's death is a product of what they've done??? and all she says is, "Damn . . ."
like maybe i'm getting way too into it, but it is crazy to me that Medusa seemingly sees that because of her treatment of Crona she is going to die by them, and is just kinda like "fuck it, gotta go all the way i guess." there's no acknowledgement of this moment afterwards, Tezca and Justin fight and the next time we hear from Medusa she's telling Crona they did a good job during their fight with Black☆Star and Tsubaki. Medusa is just so casual about the fact that she's pushed a person so far that it will inevitably lead to her own death. she doesn't even try to amend anything or figure something else out after this. what's the point in amending your wrongs since there's no going back, i suppose.
fellas, is it gay to threaten to kill your crush's mom in exchange for information of their whereabouts???
i feel like this definitely counts. when your friends know how much you care about one person that they immediately react to hearing bad news about that person is "oh man, they're gonna cry." kinda gay imo.
also, Maka literally sends re-brainwashed Crona into a panic. by Black☆Star and Tsubaki just mentioning Maka to them, they literally lose it and it messes with the brainwashing, experimentation, whatever it is that Medusa did to them so that by the time they've killed Medusa they can at least pull some of Maka's significance in their life out of the depths of the madness. UGH!!!! devastating,,,,,,
Maka trying to pinpoint Crona's soul wavelength?? her first instinct is to look for them as she remembers them, not what they've become. i'm emotional

idk man, abandoning the order you fought for your whole life to make sure that you are able to spare and knock some sense into this person, who you know has been wrongfully manipulated??? these are kinda gay.

the head cradling, the reestablished connection, and once again, someone Maka is close to is like "yeah, Crona means a lot to Maka, so we've been making sure to keep believing in you too"
and would it truly be gay without tragedy??? without redemption and devotion and sacrifice??? without the lingering devastation that one has to live without the other for the rest of their life??? understanding that, while people may somewhat understand how they feel, they will never be able to share this specific experience with someone else??? the mourning, the memory, staring at a reminder every night of everything that happened and a promise that couldn't be kept while everyone moves on with their lives.
literally devastating. is it that poetic because that's because it's the way it was written and planned, or is it because i've become extremely attached to these characters??? that's up to interpretation (not really, i doubt Ohkubo would do what i wish this all meant)
now, happy anime things to make this nice at the end!!!!

these are arguably two of the gayest moments. i don't even have the words to explain how. Crona protecting Maka. the fact that Crona gave Maka that many flowers when the coffin was shown earlier, completely devoid of flowers. gay gay homosexual gay.

but first, gotta make sure you walk home your crush (but only if they need it of course)
then you notice they're down in the dumps (aka facing The Horrors)
only gay people go to cafes. everyone in this picture is GAY. (idek if they went to a cafe here they're just standing in front of it)
and then Maka spends and entire night stewing about how to approach them after witnessing their conversation with Eruka, then after that Crona disappears, Maka doesn't even see them again until they meet again in the church. it is time for pain.
