no thoughts, just snail cat bed
Imagine showing up to work one day and people are like âjesus fucking christ thereâs a corpse in hereâ, herd you to the back room and everyone who sees you also agrees that there is now a dead body where you are sitting, with the appropriate amount of shock and disgust about it. You figure itâs some kind of a prank that theyâre pulling, but also the people that you know arenât into pranks, or arenât very good actors, are treating you like a corpse. They go weirdly back and forth between talking about you as if youâre not there, and politely asking you to stay still while they figure out who youâre supposed to call in case of a dead body randomly appearing.
Paramedics show up, study you thoroughly and agree that while they canât see any apparent sign of death, you are, indeed, dead, and ask you to climb aboard the ambulance. Youâre taken to the temporary corpse storage that hospitals have.
On the way there you ask them whether this kind of shit happens often, and while they wonât look at you, the paramedics agree that theyâve never had a talking corpse before, though they wonât question the fact that youâre moving on your own.
Youâre eventually led to a morgue, where youâre shown a slab to lay on, and at this point you donât really even question it, you just climb onto the Corpse Shelf and lay down, maybe have a little nap, with no idea whatâs going to happen next.
Then you wake up to someone walking into the morgue, who has the shit scared out of them when you move, and theyâre like âdude what the fuck, youâre not supposed to be here, this place is for storing dead bodiesâ and when youâre like âaw man sorry I thought I was a dead bodyâ they have no idea whether youâre joking and they donât care, youâre just chased out of there.
And you just kinda go home and take a shower, show up to work normally the next day and nobody questions it.
And basically thatâs probably how those ants feel when scientists spray them with the Pheromone That Dead Ants Smell Like, and just hang out at the dead-ant-pile until the smell wears off.
I was waiting to find out what social issue this was going to be a metaphor for, so that ending really punched me in the face.
Imagine if, instead of buying NFTs, those people "adopted" wild animals, zoo animals, or animals in rescue and rehabilitation and get to help great causes and conservation AND get cute photos and stuffed animals and updates about the animals they're supporting.
Imagine if all the money that went into mining cryptocurrency and buying NFTs went into general conservation efforts instead, if it was used to help our planet instead of destroy it more.
Exactly! Instead of an NFT linked to an ugly computer generated image or art stolen from someone else, you get a certificate with a photo of a polar bear and a cute stuffed polar bear to cuddle with, along with the knowledge that you're supporting efforts to protect arctic ecosystems and endangered animals :)
Everyone wins! Unlike with NFTs, where nobody wins.
Good news: World Wildlife Fund allows you to do exactly this! Thereâs a bunch of species to choose from and the plushies are adorable.
Majority of the big animal sanctuaries and wild life protection programs do this kind of adoption. You adopt a resident of the sanctuary/program and get photos, some goodies and news of the said animal to your email.
Here are a few:
Aussie Ark - Adopt a Tasmanian Devil, a Koala, an Easter Quoll, a Squirrel Glider or a Brush-Tailed Rock Wallaby. https://www.aussieark.org.au/adopt/
A Whale Museum - Adopt an orca, also for classroom adoptions for children https://whalemuseum.org/collections/adopt-an-orca
WDC - Adopt a whale-program https://adopt-us.whales.org/
Big Cat Sanctuary - Adopt a feline like a Tiger, a Black Jaguar, a Snow Leopard etc. The list on your right has all adoptable felines. https://thebigcatsanctuary.org/marketplace/
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee - Adopt an Elephant https://shop.elephants.com/product/43E6178/adopt-an-elephant
The Shark Trust - Adopt a Shark https://www.sharktrust.org/Pages/Category/adopt
World Animal Protection - Adopt a Bear https://www.worldanimalprotection.org.uk/get-involved/adopt-a-bear
You can find lots and lots of adoption options for a good cause just by googling âAdopt [animal]â if you wish to adopt a certain animal.
At least show us the bison!
The best update.

Letâs go o o o o o o o o o o
Itâs important to understand, the Satanic Temple is an activist group.
They donât worship Satan - they donât actually believe in Satan. They call themselves Satanists because Satan is the antagonist in Christian theology.
They are actively trying to promote the separation of church and state, and prevent the US from becoming a theocracy. And their method is genius: theyâre fighting religion with religion.
Essentially, they go up against religious-based legislation by petitioning for their own religion to also be represented, since separation of church and state means all religions must be equally represented by the government, or none are. If only one is, then itâs getting special privileges and thatâs not allowed.
just came up with a really good 4 word cooking horror story but idk if you guys are ready for it

there is a tendency with history, i think, because we're so far removed from it, to kind of forget that all of the people were people
a child 10,000 years ago left a handprint on a wall. they were fingerpainting. a viking climbs up a rock just to carve the words "this is very high" 10ft off the ground. somebody centuries... milennia... ago burned their dinner so thoroughly that they buried the ruined pot in the backyard rather than attempt to clean it. shakespeare got drunk and wrote dick jokes. tutankhamun was a little boy who liked ducks more than anything. a roman carves his name into a monument in another country saying "i was here". a prisoner, centuries ago, in the tower of london scratches lines into the wall as a tally marking the days. a medieval monk scrawls in the margins bemoaning the boredom of his work.
every human being across history has said "i was here. i lived. i loved. i made something. i laughed. i cried. please do not forget me"
most of us are not important enough that we will be remembered by name for more than a few decades. we are not kings or queens or great military leaders or innovators or influential artists, musicians, authors.
but all of us, every one, has a deep primal need to persist. we leave handprints on the wall, scratch our names into stones, carve initials into a tree, mark our growth as children on a wall, bury little time capsules. write in the margins of a book. hide notes behind the wallpaper.
reaching out into the future to some unknown human long after we're gone to say
"hello, you. i was here, once"
here i re-wrote it as a poem to fit your tag
Somewhere far away from me And impossibly long ago, now A mother holds her child up high To leave a handprint on the wall
A man I will never meet Climbs a rock for fun He writes a message on the stone And he says âthis is very highâ
Somebody, once Cooked a meal and burned it Took the pot to the land outside their house And buried the evidence
An Egyptian king Thousands of years before my birth Wore a shirt embroidered with little ducks And kept it, lovingly, in a chest
In a prison cell within a tower A man stretches out through centuries And marks off the days of his sentence As lines on the wall
A long-forgotten monk Labours over a manuscript by candlelight And writes in the margins He is bored, and he has a hangover
They leave pieces of themselves behind And they say
âI was here I was here please do not forget me I was alive and I loved and I got sick I had a favourite animal I was here. Do you love me? I love youâ
Yes, I do. I hold your life between my hands And I see it, and I love you
I scratch my name into a rock On a tree, I carve my initials And the initials of someone I love So very much
I bury a box in my garden And I write in the margins I reach into the future To somebody I do not know
A stranger who will never know me
âHello, youâ I say âI was here, once. I loved and I got sick and I had a favourite colour
Do not forget about me, please I love youâ
[image description: a screenshot of tumblr tags.
"Poetry. Not really but I don't have a better tag and I'm obsessed with this." end id]
#op i'm *this* close to printing the poem and putting it on my wall
please do! i wrote it for you, stranger i will never meet
and if you print it then maybe somebody finds it, somewhere, in the back of a drawer in 100 years and hold it in their hands and love me as i love them
do not forget about me, please
May I use your poem as a writing prompt please? I will credit it and link back to you. Itâs SO ANGSTY Iâm gonna cry
of course!
it's beautiful i love it thank you

Every cat I have known would immediately climb up through the hole and start stealing everybodyâs food.
Crime porthole
this was designed by cats
Just get one of these and put them over the whole, you can have cat and food protection.
You imprison miette. You put her under the glass like the cheese. Jail for mother for hundreds of years.
Bastard observation dome
best part of my job is tricking the seeds
we have a lot of cereals (rye, barely, wheat, etc) coming in right now that are the kind that get planted in the fall and germinate in the spring and to get them to sprout we just put them in a refrigerator for five days and then put them in an incubator that turns a light on for 8 hours a day for another week and theyâre like ahhh at last spring has comeâŚ. twas a long and brutal winterâŚâŚ at last the sun returns to the fields of yore

man, I have very little sympathy for people whoâre like âI gotta let them play in traffic, my cat WAILS and acts MISERABLE unless I let them outside!âÂ
because likeâŚâŚâŚ.so does mine? at a certain point each day Grim decides she wants out, and until that happens she a) follows me about SCREAMING, and b) sits atop whatever Iâm doing and bites my hands. this is not an exageration
wanna know what I do? I take her out. either supervised in my backyard or on leash in the front
she naps in the sunlight, eats copious amounts of grass, rolls in dirt, and murders butterflies. after 15-30 minutes (equivalent to the time youâd spend on a neighbourhood dog walk) I take Grim back in, and she happily sleeps/plays/cuddles indoors for the remainder of the day
itâs legitimately low-effort
the UK literally had so many pet cats killed by cars and dismembered by wildlife between 2014 â 2018Â that the country thought there was a cat serial killer on the loose. Â
and that wasnât the first time, either â the EXACT same situation played out in the UK in 1990 because so many pet cats were dying in âsafe neighbourhoodsâ
you want more information on your âcultureâ? cats kill 55 million birds per year in the UK.
do you understand the significance of that? the average background extinction rate is 1 per million species year, and cats have caused SIXTY-THREE extinctions of small animals in the last century. weâre currently in the midst of a mass-extinction crisis occurring at a speed we havenât seen on this planet beforeâŚâŚlike, Iove your cat, love your planet, or get the fuck off my post.
I ended up having a really interesting conversation with some people at the bus stop today. They were getting out of some sort of âclean and soberâ meeting and had starting saying how they were so bored because they didnât have anything to do, and had to stay at home because all their old friends would pull them back. So I said something like, âSo this is the time to do all the stuff your parents told you they didnât have money/time for!â âWhatcha mean?â âYou know, like when you were five and you REALLY wanted to have that toy or do that thing and you were like, âPlease mom please I gotta have this I gotta go do thisâ and they went âHell no you think Iâm paying for that do you want to goddamn EAT?â â And this light went on in their eyes. The lady is going to go check thrift stores for an Easybake Oven and I told her about Wilton cake decorating classes. The dude is going to Griffith Park and ride horses, because, âI always wanted to be a cowboy, and you canât drink when youâre on a horse âcause youâll fucking die!â Fuck it. This is what being an adult is. Sure itâs bills and work and relationships, but damn it, itâs also time to do the things you LIKE. I signed up for a free class/lecture on Water Gardens. Iâm going. Itâs time.
Jill. Jill you are wonderful.
no joke, this is such an important aspect of overcoming trauma. I mean the trauma of abusive parents, the trauma of broke ass parents who got toxic because of it, the trauma of capitalism. Like fuck it. Go to Wrestlemania. Build a shit ton of terrariums.
I took a stained glass class during the pandemic and now I have a hummingbird hanging in my kitchen window. And this year Iâm finally getting chickens!!
This is literally why I have my Sailor Moon thermos.
it doesnât even have to be the trauma of bad parents. It can be the everyday human pain of âI lost my favorite toy when I was 12 and never found it again.â It can be the parents who loved you and fully sympathized with your desire to have the thing, but honey, we just donât have the money right now. It can be the fact that you no longer live with your brother whoâs highly allergic to dogs, so you can finally have the dog you always wanted that you always understood why you couldnât get, and you accepted it, but it was still painful. It can be the Atari games or Nintendo games or Sega games that donât exist anymore that you played in your childhood.
As Iâve gotten older Iâve realized â you donât have to be suffering some great trauma, something unusual and particularly damaging, to feel pain. You donât have to have lost your entire home in a hurricane to have lost something you truly valued and miss a lot. You donât have to have had toxic parents to have been denied some things you wanted because they just didnât have the money, or the resources, or the health.
Time is pain. Loss and disappointment are part of human existence. But you donât have to try to justify why your specific loss or disappointment is especially bad to admit that it hurts and do something to rectify that hurt in some small way.
Good advice
