Kade rocked his chair back on two legs and planted his feet on the desk, patently bored. His continuing education video droned on and on about elementary safety checks which, while important, wasnāt something that a seasoned fire fighter like himself particularly needed a refresher on. Especially when he and Heatwave spent a week every school year drilling the exact same information into the heads of excitable elementary school children. At least their presentation had way more entertainment valueā¦.
āSheesh, this guy could give Mayor Luskey a run for his money, how long is this video?ā Kade had just started to reach for the computer mouse when a loud honk from outside startled him. Picking himself and his chair up off the floor, the fire fighter stalked to the window and leaned out to see an ambulance parked in the driveway below.
āHey! What gives??? Shouldnāt you be over at the hospital or something?ā
"The technology for such avatars have come a long way Ezra. The Rescue Bots were in hibernation sleep while in their ship for an amount of time I rather not disclose without permission." Rob notes, "I've already given the updated avatar version to Heatwave and I trust that he will ask for copies for the others if he feels they require them."
When Ezra sets the bowl of soup near Rob he smiles and picks up the bowl. "I am but a Cybertronian medic in a human avatar Ezra. I do not have the capability to make such a intricate device like this. Though I did have a hands on experience with working on transformation cogs when I was younger." he notes.
He'll pick up the spoon in the bowl and dip it into the soup. He brings it up to his lips and takes a sip. A soft hum. "What is this?" he asks curiously.
āTheyāve shared the story of how they came to be here with Frankie and myself⦠Drifting for millions of years without even realizing it at first must have been quite a shockā¦ā
Doc Greene shook his head as he brought his own sandwich and bowl of soup to the table. āWorking with the very device that allows one to transform sounds⦠nerve wracking, quite honestly, though I imagine you must have gained an extraordinary amount of knowledge in the process.ā
The scientist dipped the corner of his grilled cheese into his soup bowl and took a bite, swallowing the combo with a quiet hum of satisfaction before turning his focus to Robustusās question. āItās called soup. Usually itās a vegetable, or combination of vegetables, that have been liquified, but some varieties add noodles, pieces of meat, or chopped up pieces of the veggies themselves⦠or all three, to add a bit of texture to it. This particular soup is tomato, though, botanically speaking, the tomato is actually considered a fruit, but in culinary circles itās called a vegetable because of itās savory natureāā
āDoc, he asked about the soup, he didnāt ask for a crash course in tomato science.ā Kade was at the stove again, ladling yet another serving of soup for himself. āā¦. Whatās a transformation cog?ā
A soft ah at hearing the Rescue Bots had shared some of their history. He takes another sip of his soup, letting it sit on his tongue for a bit before swallowing. It was like having a warmed energon with different flavoring.
"It was a test of the know how of the team of mechs we gathered together to work upon cogs and alter them. Because of our work the triple changers became a thing. Heatwave is an example of a quadchanger." Rob explains, "We went through a little trial and error with non-functional cogs and worked up to ones inside a living mech or femme."
A little nod to the explanation of soup, "It has a pleasant tang to it that I appreciate." a smile at Kade, "I got my answer as to what type of soup, which has been answered. I do appreciate a scientific reply though."
He takes another sip of soup before he replies to Kade's question, "The transformation cog is what enables Cybertronians to change between our modes. Typically root modes are bipedal though there are instances of quadrupedal as well. then there is the secondary mode, typically a vehicle of some sort. There are of course non-vehicular as well. For example, a quadrupedal with a cassette mode. There's several of those about in both Autobot and Decepticon armies."
Doc Greene listened thoughtfully as Robustus explained how heād gotten into working with transformation cogs. āA sound way of going about things. Were you able to maintain contact with the recipients to see how things held up over the years?ā
Kade, meanwhile, was in over his head. Heād never really been interested in the scientific world and long explanations with big words usually resulted in complete lack of comprehension on his part.
āSoooo transformation cog equals transforming, got it.ā
At least heād paid attention to Robās first sentence.
Tipping the last of the soup from the pot into his bowl, Kade frowned at the empty sandwich platter before getting up to start opening cabinets.
āGot any saltines or anything, Doc?ā
"I have kept in touch with them via comms for the most part. I'm planning on visiting them in the future since most of them live on Earth now. Three of them are at the same base. Would be a bit of drive from Griffon Rock though. I might try convincing them to come here." Rob's avatar mentions.
He'll look over at Kade, "Yes, exactly." he replies with a smile. He'll work on a bit more of his soup as he watches the man search the cabinets for more food. A soft chuckle escapes him.
"Now Kade don't eat the entirety of the man's food supply, he has two growing children feed." he points out.
āWonderful. If they come to Griffin Rock, I would love to meet them⦠but only if they have the time or inclination to socialize with humans, I know not all Cybertronians are keen on the idea.ā Doc Greene glanced over at Kade with an indulgent smile. āThird cabinet on your left, but open it slowly, Dither likes to reorganize things and, for some reason, he has a tendency to stock groceries in the most haphazard way possible.ā
āAnd I have a growing me to feed.ā Kade opened the cabinet that Doc had indicated, quickly catching a jar of jelly and a few cans of tuna as they rolled off the shelf. He winced as a plastic jar of peanut butter slipped through his fingers and clattered noisily against the floor. āI think your shelves could stand a little leveling out, Doc⦠and Dither could stand a tune up. I mean, who stacks cans and jars on their sides like that?ā
Kade dumped his armload of canned goods on the countertop and retrieved the crackers he was after.
āBut speaking of children, is this visit happening before or after you and Heatwave have your ki- I mean your sparkling?ā
ājust a casual visitā
Someone beat my muse up. SendĀ ājust a casual visitā for my muse to show up at your museās door in this state.
Shit. This was not supposed to happen. This type of stuff was acceptable back on their home planet, but drunken bar fights in secret warehouse bars on Earth? And with his partner in his condition? Kup had fragged up.
It was late, and Heatwave was probably fraught with worry that the Gunny hadn't come home right after shift change. But the stress of becoming a Sire, the stress of a new job he didn't really like, and the forced partnership between him and Kade had driven the old bot to bad habits.
It was the middle of the night, and Kade was off duty. Luckily with him not being at the firehouse, there was a chance that his temporary human counterpart would be home. And so, in his altmode, the old jalopy parks in front of his garage - laying down on the horn to rouse him from his slumber.
Front windshield was bashed, front fender cracked, and back bumper hanging. Old rust bucket looked a mess - worse than usual. Turning off his engine, the headlights flicker off as he waits. The two weren't the best of friends, but Kup was in a desperate situation and in need of help.
Startled awake by the sound of a truck horn right outside, Kade groggily pushed himself out of bed and pushed his window open.
āDo you have any idea what tiā Kup?ā
The bright security light mounted over the garageās bay door spotlighted the state the old pickup was in. Wordlessly, Kade pulled his head back and shut his bedroom window. Toeing on a pair of slippers, he ran to the garage and hit the button for the automatic door.
As the garage door noisily rolled upward, Kade gestured Kup forward into the vacant bay. āWhat the hell happened to you?ā
With it being so late at night, no one would notice the transformation if he did it outside, right? Hastily returning into his root-mode, Kup is sprawling himself across the expanse of Kade's garage.
"Ah fragged up Kade..." Kup murmurs drunkenly before he's hiccuping up at the overhead light. "Ah let it get to me. All tha stress. If ya think Ah look bad, ya should see tha other mech. Blew out both his front tires."
He pauses a moment as he takes a shaky vent.
"This ain't tha kinda bot he should be with Kade... Ah ain't good enough. He deserves better. And now Ah can't even go back to tha hangar lookin' like this?
So... we got off right? And Ah was still pissed about that last call. So instead o' goin' back ta base, Ah went and got a few drinks. Push came ta shove and ended up gettin' in a fight and gettin' thrown out. So now here Ah am. Be honest... how bad is it?"
A short little snort escaped at the whole āyou should see the other guyā bit. No one ever did get to see him.
Kade moved in a slow circle as he looked Kup over. āBroken windshield, fender and back bumper damage⦠not as bad as it could be, I suppose. Iāve got spare parts aplenty, so no worries there, but⦠youāre gonna have to find a different way to work off stress.ā
The fire fighter went to his tool chest and started rummaging. āEver tried a rage room?ā
"Pffffft... why do ya think Ah drink so much, kid? It ain't 'cause it's good fer me." Kup retorts as he drunkenly feels around for his flask.
"Ever tried a rage room?"
"Frag's a rage room?" It seemed pretty self explanatory, but it didn't hurt to ask.
"Heatwave's gonna have mah helm. Ya think ya can cover fer me? Jus' tell him Ah came here and fell asleep after work?"
Kup...
"Nah, don't do that. Ah gotta own up to it. Ah deserve what Ah've got comin'."
Kade laid a few tools out on a wheeled table and came back to Kupās side.
āLike I said, you need a different coping mechanism. A couple of drinks is fine, but how is passing out drunk supposed to help you or Heatwave?ā
āLemme at that fender, Iāll mend that crack then work on the bumper⦠A rage room is basically a place where they give you a choice of weapon and a room full of junk that you can smash to pieces until you feel better.ā
Hearing the first half of Kupās request, the fire fighter paused for a moment with a screwdriver suspended in midair. He was about to grab a mallet and give his temporary partner another dent to worry about, until Kup changed his mind.
Letting out a breath he hadnāt been aware he was holding, Kade continued working.
āYou guys should talk anyway, I mean really talk. Tell him youāre worried about parenthood⦠Hell, tell him how much Iām stressing you out⦠He wonāt dump you for being honest with him.ā

The flight from Manhattan to the sleepy coastal town of Griffon Rock was just shy of an hour. Just enough time to get situated, enjoy a beverage, and land. She hadn't originally planned on heading there for the holidays, but with her brother coming home from deployment as a surprise for his boyfriend, she had to be there. How long had it been since she'd seen Colt? Well certainly not since he'd met and fallen in love with Hunter. Talk about a crazy whirlwind romance! She was happy for the Gunny, and excited to finally meet up with him and his new beaux.
Tossing her pink carry-on into the back of the Tesla, she was soon en-route to the quaint downtown area to check in to the little bed and breakfast. A cozy little spot that made New York feel millions of miles away. No hustle and bustle, no constant horns honking or sirens wailing. She could get used to this. She spent the afternoon exploring, enjoying the sights and shops, and even had a bite to eat at the pizzeria. It was all going great, until the car was out of charge. She hadn't seen a single EV charging station the entire time - wondering why in the world the rental company would offer that type of vehicle in an incompatible market?
The vehicle slowed, then crawled, then stopped. Battery was dead as a door nail. Raking her manicured hand down her face, the blonde sighed as she climbed out of the vehicle - frowning that she was only about 2 miles away from the inn. Pulling put her phone to call for assistance, she hadn't noticed that it too had died.
"Well now, fer tha love of..."
The wind was picking up - a winter storm looming off the coast threatened to kick in. Stuck outside in a winter weather advisory certainly was the last thing she had on her bingo card for today. She'd passed a firestation just a few blocks back, maybe they could at least help her charge her phone?
Why had she worn heels? She could navigate the runway with ease in her sky high Christian Louboutins, but not exactly sidewalks. She stuck out like a sore thumb at best. And by the time she finally approached the station, her petite feet were screaming.
So now what? Did she just go inside? Did she look in the garage? Did they have an office? How did this all work? With the clouds building and threatening snow, she decided it best to just walk into the open garage and hope for the best.
"Hello?"
āThat does sound good. Okay, my turn.ā
Kade closed his eyes and ran a finger down the menu, eventually stopping on a dish called The Cajun Combo Platter.
ā āA delectable variety of New Orleansā finest cuisine right at your fingertips.ā Ooo, perfect, thisāll be really easy to share.ā
Once they had placed their orders with the waiter, Kade gave Tess a warm smile. āSo, what exciting things does a glamorous model like yourself do for fun?
"Mmm. That does sound real good," Tess muses as her gaze drifts over to the shoreline. Even though it was chilly out and rather overcast with intermittent drizzle, it was warm and dry on the patio.
Leaning back in the seat, she notes that there aren't any other patrons outside. "Would ya mind if Ah hit mah vape? Bad habit, Ah know."
Retrieving the little pink device from her purse she sets it on the table to await his answer. If he says no, she can certainly put it away or excuse herself to another locale.
"So, what exciting things does a glamorous model like yourself do for fun?"
"Glamorous?" She smiles before twirling a blonde strand around her fingers. "Ah don't know that Ah'd call mahself glamorous, but Ah love ta do all kinds o' things. S' funny. There's city girl Tessa who loves gertin' glammed up, shoppin', spas, and goin' ta nightclubs. And then there's country girl Tess, who rocks a pair o' sweats, loves ridin' horses, and goin' ta dive bars with Colt."
She can't help but snicker at the stark contrasts in her own hobbies. It's almost like a double life!
"Yer turn. What does a handsome public servant like yerself do when he ain't out savin' tha town?"
Kade nodded with a small wave of his hand. āGo ahead, it wonāt bother me.ā
He paid attention as Tess enumerated her hobbies, some of which surprised him. āHard to imagine you in a dive bar, but I get it, they can be kinda fun. Thereās one at the far end of the docks across from the marina that throws a decent karaoke night twice a month.ā
Drinks were delivered, along with complementary Cajun chips and dip. After thanking the server, Kade thought about his own hobbies.
āWell, I like watching old school monster movies at the drive-in⦠browsing the shops in town, we have a lot of little boutique type places and an antique mall thatās always got stuff coming and going⦠I play crash ball for our city league⦠karaoke night at the bar⦠mechanical bull riding and video games at the arcade⦠and I like horseback riding too. Thereās a woman who gives lessons in the spring and summer, she also does trail riding after the snow melts on the lower mountain passesā¦. Maybe⦠I could take you some time?ā
With Kade's blessing, Tessa takes a few pulls from the little pink device before softly blowing the vapor away from her companion. She giggles about not exactly coming across as the type to enjoy dive bars, but truth be told, they were the most fun! Definitely some real characters there, that's for sure. Yet the drinks weren't overpriced, and never ever watered down.
"Ah'd definitely love ta hit that place up one o' these days, considerin' that Colt's moved here Ah won't be a stranger."
With the arrival of their drinks, Tessa is quick to take a sip - enjoying the delightful marriage of Prosecco and orange juice. Once this is finished however, she might opt for a local seasonal cider. Helping herself to a chip with crab dip, she listens intently to Kade sharing his hobbies.
"Y'all have a drive-in?? Ah ain't been ta one of those since Ah was knee high to a grasshopper!" Cue the internal cringe and facepalm. You could take the girl out of the country... "Ah mean, ain't been to one since Ah was little."
Smooth...
"Crash ball? Ain't never heard o' that... tell me more!"
This was so fun. And maybe if she played her cards right, she could talk Cade into going to that arcade before her flight back to the city.
"...and Ah'd love ta go trail ridin' with ya sometime. Ain't never really done those, Ah was pretty much stuck herdin' stray cattle since our collie was a dud."
āKnee high to a grasshopper?ā Kade smothered a laugh, āSorry, sorry, Iām not laughing at you, I promise. Itās just⦠you never hear fun stuff like that anymore⦠bees knees, catās pajamas, whatās shakinā bacon? See ya later alligator⦠Kind of a shame, really⦠And to answer your question, yes, we do have a drive in.ā
He took a sip of his drink, winced, and proceeded to stir in the contents of roughly a dozen sugar packets from the container on the table.
āWell, crash ball is kind of a mix between soccer and footballā¦..ā The fire fighter had just finished illustrating one of the gameās finer points using the salt and pepper shakers and a small Tabasco sauce bottle as visual aides, when a steaming plate of food was plunked down at his elbow.
āSorry to interrupt, but I do have other tables I need to get to.ā A harried looking waiter unloaded two small plates and a pair of bowls onto the table as well.
Kade blinked up at her with an apologetic smile and a sheepish āThank you.ā The woman laid Tessās plate on the table as well and with a quick āEnjoy your meal,ā hurried back indoors.
Peering through the windows to the indoor area, Kade let out a low whistle at the crowd. āForgot how popular this place is, good thing we got here when we did.ā
He unwrapped his silverware and tucked the napkin onto his lap. āSo, cattle herding huh? We talking pasture to pasture, or full on ācross the wildernessā cattle drive type stuff? Either way itās an impressive feat to keep a herd together.ā

heās soooo proud of himself i know it
@cardbotxshuffle (Blue Cop) (Hello!) "Don't be alarmed-!"
For a group that Optimus claimed to be hiding, the Prime certainly enjoyed dumping random bots on their doorstep.
Kade gazed speculatively at the new mech, there was no Decepticon symbol present, but he couldnāt see an Autobot one either, he looked a little like Chase.
āIām not, Iāve been around Cybertronians for years now. Did Optimus send you?ā
The Star Guardian pauses. The human wasn't alarmed......?
Cybertronians. Optimus. Did he mean Optimus Prime.....? Names and figures he's heard of but knew only a little about, honestly.
"Ah....no. He did not. And I am not a Cybertronian. I am a Metal Cardbot."
He explains slowly, making sure his tone is friendly and calm.
"I am Blue Cop."
āOh⦠No idea what a Metal Cardbot is, but as long as youāre not here to take over the planet, itās nice to meet you.ā
Kade held out a hand. āIām Kade Burns, but you can call me Kade. What brings you to Earth?ā
"Nice to meet you, Kade. And no, my intention is for humans and Cardbots to live in harmony.....And Cybertronians too, it seems, since they are here as well."
He carefully 'shakes hands' with Kade holding one of his digits and moving his hand up and down a few times.
"It's a bit of a long story but.....I and my kind come from the planet Machina, which was destroyed in a large explosion. Many of us Cardbots escaped the destruction and were sent across the cosmos....with many of us landing here on Earth. And now we are doing our best to make lives here, and have made friends with humans along the way...."
He starts, actively deciding how many details to share all at once so as not to overwhelm Kade. Though, if the guy had already his own dealings with alien robots from space, he could probably handle it all....probably.
"Many Cardbots have made a home in the city of Motown, but others live across the planet. Both known and unknown to us. It is the mission of myself and my human partner Jun to find all of the Cardbots on planet and ensure they do not mean any harm...."
Kade nodded thoughtfully.
āSounds pretty familiar⦠except the planet exploding thing⦠Cybertron was made uninhabitable by millions of years of war, everyone left the planet in search of energy sources and energon, some of them ended up here and made friends, some want to conquer the planetā¦.. Your entire planet exploded? How does that even happen?ā
He would nod when Kade mentioned the infamous Cybertronian war. It's reach spanning across countless sectors of space. Untold worlds....including Earth, it seemed.
What were the chances.....?
"No one is truly sure, unfortunately. Deus Machina, the mother computer and ruler of our planet, did not give an explanation. Only that the planet's destruction was imminent...and the countless Cardbots that could, escaped to the far cosmos."
āHuh. Seems pretty weird to have a whole planet go from ājust fineā to āabout to explodeā in just a fewā¦.ā
Kade paused as he remembered Optimus and Bumblebee telling him and the others about Unicron⦠and about Megatron almost terraforming the earth.
āActually, I take it back, weāve been on the verge of planetary destruction a few times without most people being any the wiser.ā
He clapped his hands together and rubbed them. āSo, I know what brought you to earth, but, any reason youāre on this island specifically? I mean, can Cardbots sense each other or anything mystical like that?ā

āWell, I like watching old school monster movies at the drive-in⦠browsing the shops in town, we have a lot of little boutique type places and an antique mall thatās always got stuff coming and going⦠I play crash ball for our city league⦠karaoke night at the bar⦠mechanical bull riding and video games at the arcade⦠and I like horseback riding too. Thereās a woman who gives lessons in the spring and summer, she also does trail riding after the snow melts on the lower mountain passesā¦. Maybe⦠I could take you some time?ā
Was that so hard?

Rob's human avatar remains still as requested until Trex declares it is done with the scan. He listens to what Kade has to say and the reply. A smile reaches his eyes, making them crinkle at the slightly wrinkled edges.
"I've not had the chance to see if this avatar can taste. I'd be willing to try out a beverage at least." he remarks as he follows alongside Kade. His robot form left behind as his focus is on the avatar he inhabits.
āDoc and Boulder have been working on advanced avatars for the bots for a while now, thereās a bunch of high tech science-y stuff involved in itā¦ā
Doc Greene met them at the door with a chuckle. āA rather simplistic description of the process, but I suppose itās accurate in itās own way.ā He held out a hand to Robustus. āEzra Greene, but my friends call me āDoc.āā
Kade was sniffing the air hopefully and made quick introductions. āRobustus, Doc Greene, Doc Greene, Robustusā¦. Do I smell grilled cheese???ā
A slightly surprised look crosses the avatar's face at what Kade just said about working on the Bots technology. "I'm honestly surprised to hear that Kade." Robustus relates.
He turns his attention to Doc Greene and accepts the other man's hand. His grip is carefully measured and his flesh feels warm as it should. Physical holomatter technology has come a long way since it was first made that was for sure.
"As Kade said my full name is Robustus, but you may address me as Rob." he intones with a smile, "He seems distracted by food at the moment, but we were hoping you could help with something for Kade's demonstration to the school children for fire safety." a significant look towards the younger man, "Like a clear enclosure that's easy to carry around by one individual."
Ezra chuckled as Kade breezed past him with single minded purpose and listened closely while Robustus filled him in on their original mission.
āNot surprising. Kadeās focus is perpetually on filling his stomach. Please, come in.ā He lapsed into a thoughtful silence as he led the medic toward the kitchen. Kade was already there, helping himself to a stack of grilled cheese sandwiches, a big bowl of tomato soup, and pickles.
āI believe I can manage that quite simply, any other specifications?ā
Kade finally managed to join the conversation with a huge swallow. ā⦠Yeah, itād have to be heat resistant. Iām planning on containing a burning candle with it to show what happens when you deprive a fire of oxygen, I donāt want the thing shatteringā¦.ā
Doc Greene nodded, making a note on the tablet heād retrieved from his pocket. Politely, he turned to Robustus. āSince weāre having lunch, did you need some energon?ā He gazed at the avatar thoughtfully for a moment longer before asking, ādoes your avatar allow you to give the illusion of earth food consumption?ā
A chuckle from Rob's avatar at the mention of Kade focusing on eating. "I've noticed that as well." he notes in good humor as he follows Ezra to the kitchen where Kade is digging into a meal already.
"What he said plus an easy way to access the enclosure. Make it fool proof and possibly shatter proof just in case. No need to expose any children to glass shards if we can help it." Rob notes with a smile.
He considers the questions a moment then replies, "I recently had a intake of energon so I'm fine there. The avatar can simulate many things like breathing, eating, and drinking. It can even convert the food to energy if needed, otherwise its rendered into a substance we can rid of easily."
Doc Greene added a few more notes to his tablet before transferring the data to his workstation for easy reference once he actually got started on the project.
Setting a sandwich and two pickles on a plate, the scientist brought them to the table before going to the stove and carefully ladling out a bowl of soup. āFascinating. I constructed a hologram projector for Blades so he could attend an off-island event disguised as a human, I had no idea you bots already possessed the ability to produce such lifelike avatars.ā
He placed his bowl on the table and looked excitedly at Robustus. āOr is this something that youāve become capable of through your own means?ā

Kade frowned and hoisted himself out of bed to lean on the windowsill. āLast week. I forgot I stashed āem in Heatwaveās glove compartment⦠Why?ā
That is gross. High Tide nearly purged in his own intake, his expression being more contorted now.
āIām no expert in human food... But Iām almost certain these donuts went bad.ā He held onto a glazed donut with the tip of his digits and slightly squeezed one, and even then it was hard and a bit too dusty. āThat aināt no normal texture for any organic food. Might be a good idea to trash it.ā
Kade rolled his eyes skyward. āUgh, Fiiine⦠Youāre worse about leftover food than Heatwave.ā
āBut on the bright side, we can stop for donuts tomorrow!ā
