Fake It Til You Make It, or Pick Up Lines for a Bruised Lover:
Let’s pretend that we’re friends. Let’s pretend that we’ve been friends for nearly “X” years. Yes! It’s already been “X” years! OK, Friend. Let’s pretend that I’m endlessly desirable; come closer, closer, and closer, Face 2 Face with the End of the Road. Let’s pretend that it’s an affair, erotic, excessive, and consuming, but without those suffocating tentacles of mutual obliteration and effacement. Let’s pretend that we’ll never become bedfellows with the Powers that B. Let’s pretend that an encounter with difference might deteriorate the Obdurate Self, and birth a kaleidoscopic bodypolitic, an ethic around the intimate, and that an encounter with sameness will often take us no further than the boundary of flesh, Thin Skin of a Body.
Let’s pretend that I’m not sitting on a curb smoking cigarettes while I wait for the Couple to finish eating a meagre slice of cake. No Vacancy at the Table for Two. Had I not been invited to be Parasite to the Couple, I’d be elsewhere; I might still be sitting on a curb smoking cigarettes, but I wouldn’t be the One who Waits.
Let’s pretend that we’re able to rest, fuck, disagree, refuse, roughhouse, weep, laugh, and laugh, and laugh, here, together. Let’s pretend that we mustn’t go the distance. Let’s pretend that we needn’t make home at the wicked end of liberal capitalism. Let’s pretend that we’re able to opt out of the overwhelmingly exuberant imperative to happiness. Let’s pretend that we’re able to disavow the imperative without disavowing the object of the imperative. Let’s pretend that an unevenness in this particular present has been pressed flat, bad objects turned to dust, no longer unbearable. “But, Friend. Why banish an unevenness, if such an unevenness, variegated folds in flesh, has produced a pleasurable closeness?” Well, let’s pretend that an unevenness isn’t the precondition for subjective difference and that the political will carry on after such flesh is free of wrinkles. Let’s pretend that we’ve leapfrogged over the hurdle of dis/identification; irreconcilable differences be damned, let’s pretend otherwise.
