Simple sites
I'm often asked to create help someone create a “simple” website.
Simple as a word is pretty loaded. But I have an opinion so I've made this template open source.
Fast, customisable, responsive, search & social optimised, and host it for free.

Thoughts on maintaining focus, by Paul Jarvis
Try treating work as if you’re driving: 1. Don’t allow distractions. 2. Keep your eyes on the task at hand. 3. If you can’t focus, take a break.
Thank you Chrome v73. 👏👏
For the font and colour alone this is wonderful but all other info is welcome too.

Focus is a matter of deciding what things you’re not going to do.

In this episode, Adam talks to James Clear about why goal setting isn't enough, why you should focus on building habits instead, and how to build habits that you'll actually stick with.

The health of a business boils down to process and cashflow. For both of these you need quality data, agility and continuous improvement.
Me
I predict that sometime soon small businesses will be commission bespoke web apps in the same manner as bespoke websites. What's missing is the interface and a cost effective development cycle. The pieces are there though and the time is nigh

~ A very useful guide that lays out terms & expectations for shipping. ~ The practicalities, costs, admin and hassle involved in a business shipping goods is no small thing. ~ E-commerce has set the precedent that shipping should be fast & free but for some businesses who don't do this at scale it's a bad model. ~ This guide explicitly shows where the responsibility, cost & insurance lays between the supplier & the buyer.

Contrast ratios
The colour of text compared to its background colour should contrast enough to be easily legible. This is important for accessibility in any visual design.
Accessibility is not a concern for a subset of visitors – it includes everyone and that’s not an ethical obligation either, it’s a practical one. Everyone wants to easily read the web and that’s regardless of whether their eyesight is less than perfect or if they’re using their mobile outside on bright, sunny day.
For far too long I knew my website’s colours weren’t distinct enough but now I’ve finally done something about it. Chrome’s Dev Tools give you a nice curve showing that colours with good and bad ratios. These colours aren’t my ideal in terms of visual brand, but they are closer to an ideal for everyone who might look at my site.
HTTPS (Secure)
Pretty pleased to have achieved a green padlock on my site. There was definitely some head scratching and swearing along the way so I'll publish my workflow sometime soon.

Wikipedia
Technical debt is a concept in software development that reflects the implied cost of additional rework caused by choosing an easy solution now instead of using a better approach that would take longer.
Creating technical debt in this way is fine, it’s an expected result of building at pace. We took a strategic decision to prioritise delivery in order to give the best immediate value to the taxpayer, knowing we would incur tech debt.

Sandi Metz on how OOD (objected-oriented design) and agile development simplify design requirements, promote communication and lead to better, faster, more cost-effective software.
The Agile Bargain: "We're all in it together. Customers decide what a product should do, and makers decide how long those things will take." (paraphrased)

The Discipline of Do Easy (D.E.), by William S. Burroughs and Gus van Sant
D.E. is a way of doing. D.E. simply means doing whatever you do in the easiest most relaxed way you can manage, which is also the quickest and most efficient way, as you will find as you advance in D.E. You can start right now tidying up your flat, moving furniture or books, washing dishes, making tea, sorting papers. Don’t fumble, jerk, grab an object. Drop cool possessive fingers onto it, like a gentle old cop making a soft arrest.
