Better Pray For Hell Not Hallelujah
rydell-clarkeâ:
Something ominous was hanging in the air.
It was something that Rydell could feel but couldnât explain, a heaviness that stuck to her like a thin sheen of sweat. Perhaps it was the animal instincts that lay down beneath the surface, the wolf prowling around inside echoing in her head that something was wrong; fight or flight of the inner canine rising up like bile. There was a darkness that threatened her senses, her mind.
Her mind hadnât been the clearest of late. Alcohol filled most of her days and nights; the desire to ignore a connection she had never asked for with a person whom could never (would never) understand her making her anxious and uneasy. It would have been so easy to chalk it all up to that. But instincts told her otherwise. (So much of life in that town was based on instincts.)
It was those instincts that led her to the woods; the pounding of the wolfâs heart heavy in her head, feel moving automatically as though led by some unseen force. Be quiet, the wolf seemed to whisper. Quiet as the sunrise; quiet as the dead. Hush, hush, hush.
And so she was quiet; and so she was careful, moving through the trees like a shadow, feet moving instinctively until she could gaze upon a clearing, too far into the trees to see from the road; a hidden hideaway from the world. A place for secrets; a place where evil seemed to hang in the air and seep into the pores.
There stood two men, two locals. The faces were a haze of recognition without name, the type of locals that gave them all a bad name. Too low-class redneck; too bigoted for a town like theirs. Perhaps that was why her brain wouldnât- or couldnât- bring up their names but those faces? Oh those faces filled her with trepidation, the wolf growling deep within the depths of her soul.
And they were whispering- or perhaps they were muffled by the sound of her own heart, she couldnât be sure. All she knew for sure was that the wolf had told her that something was wrong. And her wolf was rarely wrong.
Slowly the alpha began making her way towards them. Quiet, careful, calculated. Their voices still a dim sound while her heart seemed to be loud enough to summon the dead or frighten animals away. And it was when she was just feet away, still mostly hidden by the trees that she saw it, what her wolf had been sensing- a small black cat, azure eyes wide in one of the menâs arms- a buck knife in his other hand. âYour turn,â he almost dared his friend. âI canât always do it.â The blade was held out; the rising sun reflected off of the sharp edge, an inverted pentagram carved deeply into the hilt.
The wolf growled again. Loud, feral.
âI have a better idea.â The animal growl made her almost unable to recognize the voice as her own even as her feet brought her out from around the trees. âHow about you be the helpless animal this time?â
She didnât even feel her hand shift, claws springing forth. Normally it hurt- or at least stung. This time it felt like nothing at all.
In the manâs hands the cat hissed, its own claws digging into the fleshy part of its captorâs hand. The unarmed man mumbled out an undignified âshitâ and took off running- or he tried, his fear making him clumsy, uncoordinated. His feet tangled up in one of the tree roots and sent him flying forward, head hitting against the trunk with a sickening cracking sound. But he was still breathing; but he would still live.
The other man glanced at his friend briefly, the cat all but forgotten as he released it to the ground. The feline took off, a streak of black dashing off into the underbrush. And the wolf pounced, faster than the man could turn back around.
Still mostly human Rydell tackled the man to the ground, the blade falling from his hand and slicing open his palm. Canine eyes looking down at him, head cocked to the side. âDonât like when the animals can fight back?â She still couldnât really recognize her own voice though she knew the words came from her, could feel them rolling off of her tongue.
A clawed hand reached out and snatched the blade back up before he could grab it once more; the tip ended up pressed against his abdomen. âHow does it feel to be the helpless one?â The tip sliced open the skin; somewhere in the back of her mind she thought she heard him scream though the smell of blood was almost overwhelming her senses.
But then she heard it- the sound of someone else coming. Not the other man- his smell was still lingering. No, someone else entirely. Dropping the blade Rydell almost could have clucked her tongue in disappointment. âGuess itâs your lucky day.â A predatory smile; a gripping of his neck. It took one swift motion for her to slam the back of his head into the ground and knock him out like his friend.
And then she was up, running further into the woods, heart beat pounding in her ears because there was someone else in the woods. And the wolf wasnât ready to encounter anyone else.
And so despite her hatred of hiding the woman ducked behind a patch of trees even as the animal in her decided to rest once more; even as she stripped off her bloody shirt and tossed it away.
She had never been intending to kill the men- at least she was almost completely sure of that.
Arizona always scheduled his shifting for the evenings since he preferred to sleep as a wolf anyway, it was just convenient and the cool night air did him good. Even shifted, he was scrawny and unassuming - the glint of his teeth and the sharpness of his claws the only thing that marked him as the dangerous predator he was.
It was easy for him to go unnoticed on his evening strolls in the woods, something he was grateful for as he often took the time to recharge from the day. As an introvert, being around people for too long pushed him to irritation and exhaustion, but embracing his wild side had all of that fizzling away.Â
He heard them before he saw them, loud footfalls and the low hum of voices standing out like a neon sign in the quiet of the forest. Stupid humans. He assumed it was a group of high schoolers up to general teenage mischief until he smelled the blood.Â
Blood!
The voices became more frantic and the smell of fear overwhelmed everything but the blood, stopping the werewolf in his tracks and setting his hair on end. Arizona shouldâve headed back, he usually wouldâve, but there was something that drove him forward. Slinking through the shadows, he followed his nose, the scent of fear and pain getting stronger and stronger until it was the only thing he could recognize. It was overwhelming, so much so that he almost missed the smell of werewolf.Â
An alpha. One he recognized, too.Â
He couldnât remember who, exactly, the scent belonged to, but he was certain heâd met them before. The same force that nudged him before pushed him forward still, his nose leading him closer and closer to the scene of the crime. What the hell had happened here?Â
Was that cat?
gabrielgreymarkâ:
Gabriel offered him a small smile feeling a bit bad that Arizona seemed so uncomfortable. âYou never need to apologize to me Arizona. Itâs completely fine and I understand.â He didnât but he knew better than to push. It took a lot out of him to ask Arizona for dates in the first place and he was starting to get scared that he was pushing too far. He never said yes and the continual asking couldnât be helping him in getting Arizona to like him. He was hard to crack and Gabriel wasnât sure if he ever really would get him to open up more.Â
âWhat book are you reading?â He hadnât gotten to get a good look at the book that Arizona had been holding. He had been too distracted by how good the younger man looked that day. He was always so cute Gabriel just wanted to gush over him. Not that he ever actually would though he couldnât imagine how much that would freak Arizona out. âWell as long as youâre okay with my company I suppose Iâm not doing too horribly.â He wasnât fully convinced that Arizona actually did enjoy his company but as long as he said he did he was willing to believe him.Â
Running his fingers along the spine of his hardback, Arizona wished - not for the first time - that he could convince himself to take the risk. It was obvious that Gabriel felt some kind of guilt for asking and that made the whole thing even harder. Truth be told, he liked the attention, he liked the fact that someone so fun and attractive thought him interesting enough to take out, and even though it also made him feel a bit squirmy and uncomfortable, that was nowhere near the overlying emotion. If he were a braver person, heâd have said yes in a heartbeat, but he wasnât. Â
Books, right. Those were easier.Â
âOh, uh, âScientific Writing and Communicationsâ by Angelika Hoffman.â He replied, reading the title of the book with a little laugh. It wasnât everyoneâs cup of tea, and it certainly wasnât typical pleasure reading, but it was useful and the author wasnât dull enough to put him to sleep. âItâs...exactly what it sounds like, but less torturous. Itâs partially for school and partially for me, so thatâs all the more reason to finish.âÂ
Arizona really didnât want to pick it up again at this point, heâd lost his rhythm and Gabriel was much more interesting than Angelika Hoffman with her end-of-chapter exercises and manuscript outlines. He gave excellent book summaries and when they got to talking about mutual favorites, the werewolf could easily allow himself to relax. âWhat about you? Assuming you, too, are not reading Angelikaâs guide to manuscripts.âÂ
davisxainsleyâ:
He couldnât stop the huge grin from forming when the other opened the door, seeing Jules. âHey! Itâs really no problem! I mean, I was only like⊠Two blocks or so away soâŠâ He chuckled as he entered the home. âHey sweet princess? How are you?! Whoâs my favorite little girl?â He grinned wider as he watched the dog wag her little tail and hop up and rest her front paws on his thigh. âHey sweet beanâŠÂ â He cooed, moving to gently take her paws in his hand, pulling her up just a little so he could kiss the top of her head, receiving a shit load of licks as he did. âAlright, so, task at hand. Lemme see it, Zona!â He giggled, moving to the couch to take a seat, chuckling as Jules hopped up and laid right across his lap like a seat belt. âGuess I have a pup belt now, huh?â
Pausing momentarily to watch Davis and Jules, amusement and affection making him feel all warm and fuzzy, he joined the two of them on the couch and booting up his computer. âI guess you do. Iâm surprised you got off so easy, this morning she was determined to lick my face as much as she possibly could,â he commented, scratching at Julesâ head while he waited for everything to load. Arizona really needed to buy a new computer one of these days, his old Dell laptop was finicky and sometimes went days without actually working before returning to normal.
Finally accessing Google Docs, he pulled up the rough draft of his article and tilted the screen toward Davis since Jules had decided to claim the manâs lap for her own. She was lucky Arizona loved her so much or heâd have kicked her out of the living room so the two of them could get this article done before he had a mental breakdown. âIs this good? I can move closer if you still canât see.âÂ
 gabrielgreymarkâ:
Gabriel instantly noticed that Arizona moved away from him and though it stung a bit he took the hint and gave him some more space moving to the other side of the couch. He was openly flirty with the younger man but he didnât want him to feel pressured. At the end of the day if he wasnât interested he wasnât interested. Soulmate bond or not it wasnât like Gabriel could force him to be receptive of his advances. âHmm avoiding my invitation for a date once again Arizona. You would think I would take the hint by now but I guess Iâm a slow learner.âÂ
Turning his attention to his own book that he had brought with him he opened it to the page he had been on. Julian would no doubt be by soon offering them all kinds of tea and cookies. He liked the blonde but sometimes he was envious of how close he seemed to be to Arizona. âAre you enjoying your day. I hope Iâm not bothering you too much.â
It was hard to miss Gabrielâs reaction to his attempt at putting space between them - the man had moved to the other side of the couch, after all - and Arizona couldnât help but feel guilty for that. It wasnât his intention to literally drive him away, he just wanted to maintain some of his dignity and keep himself from turning tomato red because of the closeness. It was stupid, the fact that he couldnât even sit next to the man without blushing like a Middle Schooler, but there was nothing he could do to stop it short of physically avoiding Gabriel for the rest of his life and he didnât like that idea one bit. âHeh, Iâm sorry about that. If it werenât the most cliche thing in the entire universe Iâd say âitâs not you, itâs me.âÂ
It was. Him. He couldnât bring himself to accept the offer no matter how tempting it was simply because of the risk. Arizona didnât see himself as dating material - he was obsessive when it came to controlling his life and he expected the worst of every situation until there was proof otherwise, not the kind of person anyone wanted to pursue a relationship with. It sucked, but he wasnât about to ruin a perfectly good friendship on a whim just because he felt drawn to Gabriel like heâd never felt drawn to anyone before.Â
Glancing at the title of Gabrielâs book with casual curiosity, his own lay ignored for the time being. âYeah, Iâd say so. Itâs been pretty good so far. I donât have a crazy amount of work to do so I get to catch up on some reading Iâve been meaning to do.â He shrugged, shaking his head even before Gabriel had finished his sentence. âNo, of course not. I may not accept your dinner offers, but that doesnât mean I donât like your company.âÂ

It took a little longer than expected since Davis decided to walk to the other manâs house (seeing as it was a nice day and he wasnât too far from the other). He gently knocked on the door three times, his little signature knock as he stood back, hearing the click clack of Julesâ nails on the floor before hearing the dog let out a loud boof, making him giggle a little. He braced for impact once the door began to open.
@werewolfarizonaâ
Arizonaâs apartment was quiet, almost eerily so now that Jules had calmed down enough to lie by the couch at her ownerâs side, and the werewolf continued to stare at his unfinished piece of writing with a mixture of dissatisfaction and resignment. Heâd been agonizing over the two thousand word column for the majority of the week without much to show for it and at this point, he was desperate enough to bug his friends for a little help. Of course, they were wonderful people so they seemed more than happy to do so, but that didnât change the fact that he felt kinda bad for disturbing them with a less than pleasent task.Â
Jules jumped up from her spot on the floor even before there was a knock at the door, barking in excitement, her tail wagging a thousand miles a minute and her solid form hurtling toward the door. Snorting in amusement, he closed his computer and trailed after her with much less vigor, his too-long sweatpants catching on his toes as he walked. Grabbing Jules by the collar, he unlocked and opened the door, greeting Davis with a smile. âHey! Thanks again for coming on such short notice, I really appreciate the second opinion. Here - come on in.âÂ
Shuffling out of the doorway, dragging Jules along with him careful to ensure he wasnât causing her any discomfort, he gestured for Davis to enter the apartment. Zona was proud of his home, it was extraordinarily neat and yet remained fairly welcoming - not quick clinical in its cleanliness. He kept things similarly to how they were when his mother was still alive, it made him feel like he was doing something to keep her memory alive and kept him from going overboard with his need to control life.Â
I drank coffee and read old books and waited for the year to end.

Text | Arizona & Davis
Davis: Of course! It's not a problem at all! And hey, I like helping people out the best I can, even though it's not really my type of work haha!
Davis: You say that like I mind, Zona!
Arizona: I have an obligation to warn you about what you're getting yourself into by coming over today. Besides I haven't had a chance to walk Jules today - my schedules all messed up and I'm having a hard time putting it back together - so her energy is kind of my fault.
Arizona: Thanks again.
Text | Arizona & Davis
Davis: I'd love to actually!!
Davis: I'll be over in like, ten minutes!
Arizona: Really? Sweet, thank you so much! I know it's not the most riveting material, but I'm stressing about this and it's really eating into my schedule.
Arizona: Forewarning, Jules is in an excitable mood today.
Text | Arizona & Davis
Arizona: Hey! I was wondering if you'd look over my newest column piece for me before it has to be published? I'm concerned about the flow.
Arizona: And about whether or not the whole thing makes any sense in the first place. The family bonding topic really through me for a loop.

gabrielgreymarkâ:
For months Gabriel had been running into Arizona at the little bookstore in town. Their conversations had started innocently enough. Trading books they had liked back and forth. The more he got to know the man the more he became certain he was his soulmate. It hadnât been an instant thing but he knew it without a doubt now and that was the only reason he had the boldness to flirt so shamelessly with him. He truly felt that he would be with him one day. He just had to get Arizona to realize they belonged together. He was at the bookstore again that day and it wasnât hard to spot Arizona curled up on the little couch with a book. A small grin came to his lips as he moved to take a seat next to him maybe sitting a little closer than he strictly had to. âHey there handsome. When are you going to finally agree to go to dinner with me?â
@werewolfarizona
Arizona loved Julianâs bookstore almost as much as Julian himself, which was a lot considering he viewed the man as one of his best friends. It was cozy, homely in a way his apartment wasnât and filled with just the right amount of background noise for reading. It was also the only place he was bound to run into Gabriel - a professor of Astrology a few years his senior. Zona had no idea why, but there was just something about him that made him want to spend as much time as possible in his presence. It was odd, especially since he wasnât much more than an acquaintance at that point. Hell - he didnât even know the manâs last name. He tried not to dwell on it too long, chalking it up to some kind of weird crush and moving on, but heâd never been good at letting things go.Â
Speak of the devil, just as Arizona had settled into a comfortable ball on the couch farthest away from the bookshelves, he was joined by none other than Gabriel himself. The man was suddenly so close he could feel the heat radiating off him and that feeling - the pull - hit him full force all at once.Â
His ears heating up in response to the unexpected closeness, he shut his book, offering Gabriel a smile and scooting closer to the arm of the couch to give them both more room. Times like these made him thankful he was so small. âHey, Gabe. Nice to see you, too,â he greeted, his smile widening almost imperceptibly, eyes darting to his hands before returning to Gabrielâs handsome face.Â
ftkiaanâ:
Kiaan had been told countless times that he needed to get out more. His assistant at work, his younger sister who had a much more interesting social life and countless others. People who liked to have a say in his life despite him never asking for advice. And yet, here he was, listening to them by sitting at the bar with a drink in his hand.Â
His mouth hanging open just slightly in shock at the sight of just how carried away people got in places like this. The affects of alcohol really lead to people having all sorts of âfunâ. He blinked a few times when he realised he was being spoken to. âSorry. Huh? Polar bear? Males are generally around 450kg but a female can weigh around 250kg. These are just generalisation though.â
Well, it certainly wasnât the answer heâd been expecting, but it wasnât the worst response he couldâve gotten. Not by a long shot. It did, however, make him realize just how ineffective it was to use ice breakers...ever...in a situation with real people. There were so many variables and Arizona just made things harder by introducing cheesy grade school conversation starters into the adult world.Â
He really needed to get better at this if he ever wanted to write for a respected scientific journal.Â
âYeah...thatâs...yep. Thereâs a second part to that introduction about their weight being âenough to break the iceâ but Iâm just gonna skip that because itâs stupid in hindsight. Iâm Arizona, and I specifically researched the average weight of polar bears for that ice breaker. Why did you?âÂ

casswilscnâ:
Cass beamed when he called her wonderful, her entire face lighting up. âWell shoot, we can fix that easily! All you have to do is give me a chance!â She just knew she could win him over - had to win him over - if she had half a chance. After all, everything inside of her was telling her they were meant to be together. Fate certainly couldnât be wrong.
Dragging the man along behind her, Cass led the way to the dance floor of the bar, spinning around and throwing her arms over his shoulders. âYeah, dancing! Câmon, you canât tell me youâve never danced before. Everyone dances, even if they only keep it at home,â she added with a wink. ââSides, youâre dancing with me this time, so thatâs gotta count for something!â With that she started swaying in time with the music, adding in a shake of her hips here or there.
Resigning himself to letting her drag him around however she pleased, he dodged two couples on the way to the dance floor, relieved to find that the crowd was fairly sparse. It meant there were fewer people he could potentially injure with his horrific dancing. Arizona may have been short and scrawny, but he could do some damage where uncoordinated flailing was involved.Â
His hands came to rest on her waist as the werewolf begrudgingly joined Cass in swaying to the beat. She wasnât wrong in her statement that âeveryone dancesâ, Zona was guilty of a little dancing here and there when he turned on music to clean his apartment to. Granted, it mostly consisted of head bobbing and coordinating his movements to the rhythm, but it was still dancing. âYou have a point there. Just...be on the lookout, Iâve been known to accidentally step on feet.âÂ
It was kind of fun, actually, letting go. Still awkward and mildly uncomfortable since he didnât know her all that well, but fun. Cass may have been strange, but she was friendly and knew exactly what she wanted. It was refreshing, somehow, and he caught himself smiling once they really got into the swing of things.Â
julianwxdeâ:
Julian had made himself busy by baking up some peanut butter and oat dog treats for Jules and some cookies for Arizona. He wanted to show his appreciation for his friend going to get him food. He had been having a lot of trouble leaving his store that day so he didnât think he could have successfully made the trip on his own.Â
When he heard them come into the store and Arizona call out for him he jumped just a bit from fright. He hadnât forgotten that they were coming he just hadnât remembered in that moment. He had just taken everything out of the oven and set them on the cooling racks. Moving through the store he found them quickly. âHi Arizona. Thanks for coming over. Iâm so sorry that you got yelled at because of me. Are you okay?â
âHey, Itâs okay. No apologies necessary. Iâm fine and, in the end, whatâs a little embarrassment for a friend? Here - enjoy.â He smiled, holding out the to-go container of salad and croutons with one hand, Jules leash wrapped securely around the other. In actuality, the yelling had scared the crap out of Arizona and heâd left the diner feeling small and stupid. He hated making mistakes of any kind, especially in public, but the flush of embarrassment had disappeared on his walk over and he considered the ordeal worth it if Julian was happy. The witch did so much for his friends, provided a level of love and affection that was almost unheard of, and he wanted nothing more than to repay a little of that kindness with some of his own.Â
âIs it alright if I let Jules wander for a bit or would you prefer she stayed with me? She wouldnât dare hurt a fly, but she may slobber all over the lower shelves,â the werewolf laughed, scratching his pitbull behind the ears now that his hands were free. She panted happily, her tail wagging with such vigor Arizona was afraid it might fly off.Â

âI knew it! I could tell as soon as you came out with it. You for sure planned to use it tonight. I love that.â She giggled a little, shaking her head. It was nice to see that their conversation had managed to put the other at ease already. That alone made her smile wider. âNow why would I turn down such an offer? Please! Iâd love to hear some of these facts. I have a couple but doubt theyâll be as good as yourâs.â Clara ordered drinks for the two of them before raising a brow. âFor example, did you know that Phobophobia is the fear of having a phobia? Ombrophobia is the fear of rain! I uh, I had an unhealthy obsession with learning about phobias when I was a kid. Made me think mine werenât so scary!â
âNo, I didnât. Iâve never really looked into them but phobias are pretty interesting. I donât blame you for wanting to learn more especially since it helped you cope with your own. Do you know the term for âfear of rustâ? Itâs probably my biggest irrational fear so Iâm curious,â he asked, leaning forward in his interest. Arizona loved learning about the things people were passionate about, even if they could be considered inconsequential in the long run. It was fun, learning new things, and the fact that he got to hear about it from a source that was so passionate about the topic made it even better. Thanking her for the drink, he mentally sifted through all the random bits of knowledge heâd collected over the years.Â
âOkay, just remember that you asked for this. Most of my facts are within the field of Entomology since Iâve been interested in insects my whole life, but Iâve got a few outliers to spice things up, too.â Taking a sip of his drink, Arizona wracked his brain for a good place to start. âHmm, did you know that beetles are the most biodiverse creatures known to man? There are about 340,000 different species which make up almost half all identified species of insect.âÂ
rydell-clarkeâ:
âYou really must not do the small talk thing much if you think Iâm decent at it.â It wasnât a judgment, surprisingly enough coming from her. Just a stone cold fact. Social interactions were hit or miss with her- mostly because she had a hard time knowing when to turn her sarcasm off. And if he thought she was good at small talk? It said a whole lot about his skills at it.
âDonât get me wrong- current events can be boring as shit,â she conceded with a slight shrug of her shoulders. There was no shame in admitting that slight flaw in her advice. âA lot of people donât give a shit about whatâs going on in the world. I know I donât keep up on the shit going down around the world. I have enough of my own drama, thank you.â Okay, mostly enough emotional trauma but same difference, right?
âSo, sticking to things about the town might be better,â she admitted though, shit, what was even interesting about the town? It was so mind numbingly boring there sometimes she wanted to scream but if they lived there? At least they could join the conversation. It was better than nothing. âAsking someone about themselves works a lot, too. Or just try âhi, Iâm Arizona- whatâs your name?â and it might work. Keeping things simple. Sometimes that is the best way to break the ice. Safer, too. And donât worry about the words thing. At least youâre polite. Iâm usually in bitch mode twenty-four hours a day. Shutting that off is a real struggle.â
âNot much, no. Not with people I donât already know well.â It was one of the main reasons he was making an effort to go out and talk to strangers, he tended to stay inside his comfort zone when he wasnât forced to do otherwise. It was time for a change, especially if he wanted to continue to write for his column and do it well. Arizona was well aware he wasnât the lead source on everything and anything, speaking to people with different experiences was crucial to the accuracy and effectiveness of the advice he gave. âBut - weâve managed to hold a conversation thus far, which I count as a success for the both of us.âÂ
The werewolf nodded along to her advice, filing it away for later. For someone who claimed to be bad at small talk, Rydell was full of advice that seemed both sound and grounded in experience. It was a contradiction he didnât quite understand. Perhaps it came from observation rather than participation? He could see that being a reason she knew so much yet put so little merit into her own skill.Â
âIâll keep it in mind. Thanks, by the way, for the constructive advice...and for not like laughing in my face or anything. if what you say is true and âbitch modeâ is your first instinct, the restraint is appreciated.â Arizona smiled, tentatively optimistic about the rest of his evening. He tended to prepare for the worst - a chronic pessimist and neurotic planner - but whether it was the booze or the unexpected company, things seemed to be looking up.Â
âCan I...interest you in a drink?âÂ
