dehumanization as horror is great and all but what about humanization as horror. Being forced into a role that was not made for you. Being forced to fulfill expectations that you can never achieve. Being made to exist in a society that so cruelly expects you to act in a way that is against your nature.
Just once I'd like to exit the woods and for someone to see me and scream "JESUS CHRIST WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?!" as they visibly weigh whether they should run. Is that so much to ask?
we've collected twenty prompts to inspire reflection upon different aspects of animal identity that investigate how it relates to and interacts with other ideas of selfhood and existence. these prompts are flexible, and we encourage you to explore them in more abstract ways than just question-and-answer. jot down your thoughts on a prompt and then compose a poem in response to it. write a creative nonfiction piece or draw something that communicates how you feel to engage with your creative side. have fun with it!
the questions following each prompt are meant to provide a way into interpreting them, but are not the end-all-be-all of a prompt. there are no rules and no set order, just pick what resonates with you and have fun writing or creating art about what being animal means to you.
breathing - what does your body map look/feel like? what does it mean to be alive, to be an animal?
stillness - time stops and you feel yourself for what you truly are. what do you see and feel?
belief (spiritual / religious / philosophical) - does being animal relate to any spiritual, religious, or philosophical beliefs you have?
childhood - many of us report being animal from the very beginning. what were some of these experiences? did events in childhood further shape your being animal?
thunderstorm - the natural world is often especially important to those who are animal. write about a natural phenomenon that moves you in a way nothing else does.
predator / prey - are you traditionally classified as a predator or prey animal, or does your identity span both? why does one or the other feel right for you?
daylight - how do the sun and the waking world influence your identity?
night - how do the moon and world at night influence your identity?
biome - many of us have hearthomes all over the world and across different times. do you have one? have you been there? how do you know that this is where you truly belong?
weighty - what do you think has the strongest influence on your perception of self? is this something you can control? why is it so important to you?
love - what do you love about being animal? have you or would you like to forge close bonds with others like you? what makes being animal such a unique experience, and one that's worth having?
balance - being animal usually involves delicately balancing human life alongside it. how do you achieve this? do you think you've nailed it, or are there other methods you could try?
healing - has being animal helped you recover from past stress or trauma? does it make you feel safe? how has being animal improved your life?
patience / impatience - write about something you're waiting for.
discovery - we're always growing and changing, and thus always discovering something new about ourselves. take a moment to consider anything new you've learnt or are learning about yourself recently, and write how you feel about it.
a story - write your life story, as accurately or inaccurately as you want. try to fill a page. this could be creative nonfiction, a bulleted timeline, or a metaphorical creation myth for yourself. just have fun with it
softness - how has being animal made you see the world differently/has it taught you something? do you find it easier to relate to the land and fellow creatures? why or why not?
courage - we've all faced difficult things throughout our lives. describe a challenge you faced, and what it took to overcome it.
leaping - what is something you'd like to change about yourself? this could range from wanting to escape old patterns of behaviour to pursuing HRT. create a realistic plan for yourself to achieve such a change.
presence - you are here and you are alive. what are you thankful for in this world?

I truly did forget how the heatwave and seasonal changes directly affect my coyote nature and overall alterhumanity. Feeling incredibly coyote these days, I can feel my limbs so strongly it's deeply unreal.
I also feel pretty draconic funny enough- guess the koyanthropic shifter aspect still makes itself known
There's not nearly enough talk about hearttypes, so we wanted to to get conversations rolling by making a collaborative zine about it!
Otherhearted describes a person who has a strong fundamental connection to a species or character which impacts their core sense of self. This is most commonly described in terms of identifying with a being as opposed to identifying as one, although this is not always the case. - Otherkin Wiki
This zine will be a collection of artwork, writing and more all about being otherhearted. Whatever that means to you - both fiction and nonfiction pieces would be accepted. If you got something you wanna express about hearttypes, we'd love to hear it!

Both fiction and nonfiction pieces are accepted. As long as what you have in mind fits the theme, it’ll probably be a-ok.

Members of systems are welcome to submit individually or collectively. Please let us know your preference when it comes to attribution.
Once the deadline has passed, these submissions will be put into the zine and it will be posted on itch.io as a free PDF.
Submissions are due by November 15, 2026.
Submission Guidelines
Each individual may submit up to 3 works to be featured in From Within Our Hearts. Comics and multi-image works count as one piece. Individuals within a system may each submit up to 3 works. All work must be your own! Anyone caught plagiarizing or submitting AI-generated work will be barred from entering any future zines from us.
Written submissions and multi-part art entries should not exceed 10 pages. Please keep in mind the zine’s pages will be 8.5 x 11 and entries will be scaled accordingly to fit that size. We request all art submissions to be sent in either .jpg or .png file formats.
For stories that use multiple different fonts, we will do our best to preserve the general "feel" of your piece but cannot guarantee we will be able to use the exact fonts or sizes due to restrictions in what fonts we have access to, readability and overarching zine style.

Q: Where will the zine be hosted? What will it cost?
A: The zine will be hosted digitally on our itch.io and will be free to download.
Q: Is there a cap on total submissions to be included?
A: There is none, as long as the file doesn’t start getting too big for our computer we’ll do our best! If there are an unprecedented amount of submissions, we may have to delay the release. In the event that happens, we would communicate that through updates on our tumblr.
Q: Can I update my submission after it’s been submitted?
A: Yes you may, as long as it’s done before the submission deadline.
Q: Can I rescind my submission?
A: Yes you may, as long as it’s done before the submission deadline. This is because once we begin work on the zine, having to remove content mid-way through would throw off the formatting of everything else after. Please take this into account before submitting.
Q: Will this zine allow +18 entries?
A: No, nothing 18+ will be accepted.
Q: Can I submit already completed/published works?
A: Absolutely! It’s ok to submit past work that has been posted to your social media or website. Our only stipulation is that it cannot have been previously featured in another zine. This helps us keep each of our zines unique and distinct from others.
Q: What is your timeline for the project?
A: Our submission deadline is November 15, 2026. Our goal is to have the zine live by the end of the year. If something unforeseen happens and we are unable to make that deadline, we will post an update about it on our tumblr.

Questioning fox these days, can't really explain it too well but on and off, I get these intense moments where I genuinely feel a connection to foxes to the point where I feel shifts. It's not unusual for me to get cameo shifts of various creatures, however, the fox has been sticking with me more than usual
It sorta makes sense in a way, wayyyy back then, I connected hard with the fox. I was a fox at one point, but it changed for me to be a coyote, however, I guess I still have some fox since it's been making such a comeback?
It's a weird feeling to have a part of you come back so suddenly and then just stay. It's been like this for a while but I'm still questioning more or less. Either I'm intensely fox-hearted or I'm also a fox
