the   cat   hunkers   down   when   caleb   approaches,   then   lifts   her   head   a   bit,   sniffing   the   air.   caleb   and   him   interact   enough   that   he   has   a   few   items   that   carry   the   human's   scent, and she's grown familiar with it.

Caleb offers a soft smile to the shy white feline, he too understands how difficult it can be to grow out of one's own mistrusting ways and that it is not a linear path to realizing there is safety in those around you. Perhaps that was why he had always connected to cats, and why one would be good for Essek, as it seemed the dunamancer was going through a similar journey.

Letting out a groan as he stands back up does the wizard try to hide what could have been an obvious grimace from the sharp pain that shot up his back. Age had not been kind to him, especially coupled with a few adventuring injuries that had not fully healed from their time in Aeor. Unfortunately he didn't bounce back from things as easily as Caleb had in his twenties, though that was a thought for another time.

But Thjazi's choices had torn his family apart. Aranessa's husband taking the stand had put a target on her back. Julien had been so relieved when she decided not to join him in the foolish quest. He felt just as much anger when his father did join it.

The stupidest thing is that Julien believed his father would be proud of him; seeing him in action on the battlefield, taking a stand for what he believes in even in opposition from his own family. But he had never seen his father so resigned in his disappointment. It had only fueled his anger further.

None of those emotions were ever directed at Aranessa and Thjazi's children. He doesn't want his complicated feelings of anger at both their fathers and his joy about Thjazi's impending doom to sour their views on him. So instead he has been focusing on his job. Scouring the horizon for any threats he knows there won't be.

When Cal addresses him he turns his attention to him. An amused eyebrow raises at his words. " Not a bad idea. But I fear it might be too distracting. " He jokes back. His next words catch him off guard though. Had it really been that obvious?

Callowyn had always had complicated towards his former brother-in-law ever since the Falconer's Rebellion, and with the trial quickly approaching those messy thoughts had been forcefully dragged to the forefront of his mind to the point where it had been hard to avoid. Julien's question was a fair one, though the youngest Lord of House Royce couldn't place the tone or intention behind the inquiry in question it didn't mean that it was any less valid.

"Scared would imply that I currently care about his well-being." The words leaving his mouth felt callous and cold, so unlike the man he normally had been. Cal tried to see the best in people, Thjazi was standing up for what he believed in and yes there was something noble in that, but how could think fondly of him when that same man was responsible for many of the deaths of their knights and abandoning his elder sister?

A deep exhale leaves him as eyes stare out at the gardens of his home, one he may have lost if the rebels had been successful. Torn between the plights of the common folks and the protective instinct of his own family does Cal know he'd always choose the survival of House Royce over all else.

the flora and fauna, her companions over the last twenty minutes, are muted in color. it is as if they can feel the pain that has welled up inside of her and shrink back against it. the lady would too, if she could, pull herself back from the tempest that storms within and escape to some happier place. but she is the lady of a sundered house. she cannot escape her duty.

aranessa does not stir as callowyn sits beside her, frame ridged, hands clasped tightly in her lap. her brother seems flustered, she notes, but cannot bring herself to make a witty remark or fuss over the crumpled state of his tunic. she listens to him stumble over words, at his attempt at gallantry, at trying to make space for her and what she feels on this dark day. but when mentions passing him a message, aranessa interupt.

Plenty of words flit through Callowyn's mind on what he would call Thjazi Fang, none of them would dare pass his lips in his sister's presence though. Liar, traitor, bastard. It was hard for the young lord to find any warmth in his heart for the man who had hurt his sister, a deep simmering anger that lurked beneath a mask of his usual kind and gentle demeanor. His own inner turmoil surrounding Thjazi was a jumbled mess of thoughts and emotions that the younger refused to say as it would only cause further distress to her.

"The moment he decided to hurt you it became my wound too, I will not let you go through this alone." Sage green eyes look down at their joined hands, Aranessa's carefully placed on top of his own to still his fidgeting. Soft but determined does Cal's gaze return to meet her own, a hint of a grin on his face as he steels his resolve.

Though there were a little more than nine years of age between the two siblings, Cal could not help the deeply rooted protective instinct that gripped him at the thought of the pain inflicted upon her. Long gone were the days where he would hide behind his older sister for protection, the youngest lord of House Royce was now a veteran of war and an accomplished sorcerer who now had to be strong for someone who had always done so for him.

"We will stand together then, tomorrow both Sundered Houses and rebels alike will see that House Royce stands united." Steadfast loyalty and a fierce love for his family was always what drove him, and even after the hardships they had faced Cal refused to waver in the eyes of all of those who would judge them at the trial.

“Can I sign your cast?”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were hurt?”
