To be fair, it does come across narratively like they chose their new name and pronouns on the spot. Like, the idea of them being trans was setup and well foreshadowed; they just went from "hmm I was really unhappy back when I was a light faerie, I wonder why" to "actually I'm nonbinary" instantly.
I think having them have moments where they look uncomfortable being referred to as she/her or even start to say something to Tavi before backing out would've helped; maybe have Baelia mention that they "even thought of a few names [themself], but they probably wouldn't do anything anyway..." to imply they've been giving the idea thought.
(Of course, this is also a consequence of the plot having too many characters, which meant Baelia was sidelined until like, just recently.)
one thing that iâve noticed, in navigating the world as a genderqueer person with other queer people in my life, and in the reaction to the introduction of iridesia, is that some people actively take cues from others, and others need a bit more hand-holding. itâs not enough that all of the text refers to iridesia as they; some people just arenât primed to pay attention to that and need to be sat down and have it pointed out, because theyâre still making underlying assumptions (usually based on appearance, and thereâs enough to say about the idea of Properly Performing Androgyny to ââlook nonbinaryââ that im not going to get into it here)
itâs not inherently a bad thing; itâs not like the people who need it pointed out are going to ignore it! when i introduced my partner (who i referred to ahead of time exclusively with they/them) to some queer friends of mine, they still needed clarification. itâs simply not something everyone is going to pay attention to, and thatâs frustrating in its own way because it FEELS like it should be obvious if itâs something that you look for
to be sure, some of the reactions to iridesia are in bad faith and trying to disregard their identity, but i wonder how many people truly didnât pick up on it because there wasnât a scene where they came out and said âmy name is iridesia and my pronouns are they/themâ and they arenât being drawn with cropped hair and a flat chest
