Which works great, except the Damian Alfred ends up with is 15 years old not qualified to be a parent. He does, however, have a new appreciation for how freaked out his own father must have been when first presented with a strange kid calling themselves his son.

Damian does the DNA test, and Alfred really is his son. From another universe, of course, but still his son. It's a very weird thing to think about, because Damian is 15 and a virgin and should not have to think about children any time soon.

Alfred clings to him regardless. The kid is distraught about being sent away and what may be happening in his own universe, but his father told him he'll be safe with Damian, so he sticks close to him regardless of Bruce's and Dick's attempts to separate them for a bit for Damian's sake.

Weirdly, the only person that can coax Alfred away from Damian is Jon (who heard what was going on and of course needed to see Damian's son for himself). Alfred just runs up to him immediately and hugs him while crying, leaving all of them confused.

Bruce understood now, he understood what he had to do to make his children tolerate him. It was simple statistics and facts, if he just never spoke again there would be no need for any arguments. He would never say the wrong thing, he would never be able to talk back. It was the perfect plan. He began to stop talking. He faded into backgrounds and shadows. And it worked! Everyone was so happy, everyone was in his home, everyone wasn’t yelling at him. Even when some days it was hard, like the days he wanted to just talk about his troubles, but that’s selfish because his children have enough burdens.

It’s also hard on the days when he wants to comfort them, but before he even can someone else does. Life is going good for Bruce, even though it’s hard to breathe some days and he feels sadder than usual but it’s fine because his babies are happy and that’s all that matters. Until Diana brings it up. She asks him if he’s ok, he just texts her over the phone that his throat is sore but he’s fine. She skeptical but leaves it at that. Bruce smiles softly, because yes this is the way it must be.

Until he wakes up in agony. He can’t move. He can’t move. He thinks he’s dying. And for once in a while the Batman is terrified. He can’t open his eyes and he can’t even twitch his fingers. His breath is ragged and fast. He wants to call out but remembers that he’s not meant to talk. That him not talking is improving his family’s life. Sure he’s in pain but he’ll be fine. He just needs to wait a bit. If he’s quiet everything will work out

*1 hour later*

He’s terrified. He doesn’t understand. He can’t move. He thinks he’s dying, he’s going to die alone. He knew this would happen, b-but he thought he’d have more time. The time ticks by tauntingly. He cries, the only movement that his body is producing is tremors as he cries. He made his babies happy, so his tears slow and so ever slowly his mouth turns upwards into a smile. Because he realises, his death will allow his family to move on form the poison that he is. His death is not something to mourn but instead be celebrated. He allows his body to go boneless and he stops fighting he allows the pain to continue to ripple over him in his final moments

Dick is worried, he hasn’t seen Bruce this Keith and it’s late, he wants to talk to him about plans, or just talk, for some reason he cannot remember the last time he and Bruce talked. Jason is leaning on a bench across from him tapping his fingers, he’s wracking his brain over something Diana mentioned, she said Bruce seemed off and quiet. Both dick and Jason expressed their worries offhandedly to one another earlier that morning in case they sounded crazy to one another, and they’d tried to brush his behaviour off as soothing minor. Apparently the others had over heard their conversation.

Damian spoke. “ I believe you are both correct and something is wrong with father, shall we all go and wake him up?” Damian questioned, his voice quiet, he had been worried about his father for days. He missed his father, because Bruce had stopped talking to him and he felt like a part of him was missing.
