I feel like ppl who ship them do so for the dark content, not because they want them to get married and have kiddies... I’ve read some very well executed glimmer prime fics with hurt/ non-con elements, which have left me feeling both intrigued and disgusted. Fiction is a way to explore different concepts in a safe environment and im always interested to see what ppl come up, no matter how messed up the character relationships are. It does not mean the authors and readers want to do/ have these things done to them.

sometimes I keep thinking of how much potential c*tradora had as a relationship?? not as an endgame ship, but as a layered, complex relationship that still caused a lot of damage to both adora and catra (obviously not ignoring that catra was actually abusive to adora)? like, they did this in the season 3 finale and it was such a cathartic moment for adora to finally stand up for herself… but no, they completely discarded it so they could reward catra - and even then, they still did catra dirty because she has no other reason to grow without adora serving as an emotional crutch to her.

yeah, this comes from someone who rooted for the endgame kiss at first; but as someone who used to be a lot like catra in the past, realizing that she didn’t actually grow past her obsession with adora and didn’t face real consequences is unrealistic and unfair to her character development. I supported a redemption for her from the very beginning, and now I recognize how damaging it is to her (and tbh every other character was also done dirty, especially adora)

When I pulled up Netflix to watch season 5, I was expecting a season in which Catra faced consequences, did real soul-searching, and made good faith efforts to atone for her vicious acts. I neither knew nor cared if Catradora would be endgame, but I was hoping that Catra could at least relinquish her obsession with Adora and reach some kind of detente with her. Catra deserved that character development, and Adora deserved peace.

Nope. No organic consequences, no introspection, no moral growth, no atonement, no evolving past her obsession. Just a forced romance that erased the prior character development and themes of the series, and writing that artificially bent everything toward the creator’s pet.

doesn’t excuse the abuse apologism though. media still affects reality - heck, we all talk about representation in cartoons! - and SPOP should be criticized for the way it glosses over catra’s abuse in season 5 so she can have her happy ending.

the show actually did a great job in portraying parental abuse with shadow weaver, and how it builds catra’s and adora’s character arcs. they WERE doing a great job showing that adora didn’t owe catra anything. adora, scorpia and many other characters realized catra was willing to hurt others to get what she wanted - and none of them could “save” catra, nor were they obliged to. considering SPOP is targeted at children and teens, this is a very important message for them, especially those dealing with abusive/toxic relationships at such a young age!

but nope. in the final season, SPOP pulls the “she’s terrible to you because she loves you” card with catradora, and all the other characters instantly forgive catra without any consequences. not only is this inconsistent writing - essentially ruining all the complexity of catra’s character -, this is a huge step back to a once powerful message, and it still reinforces toxic values in our society - especially in the LGBT+ community, where abusive relationships are unfortunately very common as well.
