« Emmy, no, where do we put the sock ? » Marco, kneeling in front of the bed where his daughter was sitting and playing with her sock, putting her hand in.
« I don't know, daddy. » She caressed his cheek with the sock and he snorted in amusement. That girl was playing him like a puppet and the worst of it was that he loved every second. She was so alike her mother and sometimes not. She was alike him and sometimes not. The fact that a being with the amount of three years into existence had such a personality was a source of awe for him. He had been sure you could mold your kids into the person you wanted them to be but he could now see that every child was born with their own set of flaws and qualities and Emma Melody was her own person.
And he loved every single cell of her.
« Well, let's see. The hand sure does fit. » He commented, taking her hand into his. « But it's really difficult to hold hands with the sock on. Do you think it's where it goes ? » Emmy, who knew very well where socks went, giggled and shook her head. She knew she had enrolled her father into her game and she was already excited about it. « Okay, then let's take it off. » He decided, slipping the sock off her fingers. He sat down on the ground, feeling his old bones more than ever. It was time to take his medicines soon. His scars were painful on rainy day and he lived in fucking London. « Where else could we try ? »
His red headed daughter pointed her nose and playing the game, he tried to put the sock on. « It's not holding well, I don't think it goes on the nose. » Emmy showed him the elbow and the sock would not fit, neither on her ear, neither on her knee and certainly not on top of her head.
« I have an idea. » He said quietly. He took his daughter's naked foot and slipped the sock on before shaking it a bit. « It's holding pretty well. I think we did it ! » He raised his hand and out of habit, she clapped it with her own with an excited giggle.
He got up, his body unfolding ungratefully, and stretched a bit as Emmy jumped down the bed and fled into the main room they used as living-dining-room, probably looking for her mother. He was a tall man and the tiny-ness of the child clenched his heart again. She was ridiculously small and he was expected to let her go to school ? His whole being seemed to reject the idea as the wave of anxiety caught the breathe in his throat. He knew he was being irrational. School was good, Emmy was definitely ready for it, even more than that, she wanted to go. He swallowed his own uneasiness and stepped out of the girl's bedroom, heading to the kitchen.
He found the medicine waiting for him on the counter with a cup of coffee, a quiet sign of love from the other girl in his life. She was a master at silent I love yous and it sat comfortably in a place no one would ever see.
He gulped down the pills with a mouthful of coffee, barely wincing anymore. Their flat was small so he could hear Emmy and Anna chatting. Becoming a mother had done has much changed to her than becoming a father had done to him.
« Daddy ! » His child screamed, running full speed towards him, waving her favorite plushie, which was a red bunny, offered by no one else but bloody Isaac. She bumped into his legs, hugged them and laughed. Before he could even put down his cup to return the hug, she was already running into her bedroom to, without a doubt, create more havoc.
Anna appeared from the bathroom, glanced inside their child's room and came to him in the kitchen. He stared at her, taking in everthing she was and here was another person he loved every cell of.
