DREAM is a mentoring program designed to expose girls ages 13-19 to careers in Fashion & Entertainment. JaSaun Buckner and Daisy Lewellyn created DREAM in 2005 and have held programs in New York, and Los Angeles.
According to Deadline Hollywood, it’s been recently announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be played by a Black woman and we know who’s behind the inclusive decision. @monicaowusubreen is a decorated television veteran who has wrote and produced for shows like Charmed, Fringe, and Midnight, Texas. Most recently, Owusu-Breen has worked with BTVS creator, @josswhedonofficial, on @agentsofshield. We can’t wait to see what Monica does with Buffy and beyond! Keep living the #DREAM!

Wisdom Wednesday: BET Exec. Michele Thornton-Ghee on Investing In Yourself
Michele Thornton-Ghee is the author of “Stratechic: Life & Career Winning Strategies for Women” & “Stratechic 2.0: Her Plan, Her Power, Her Purpose”. She is also the Senior Vice President of Media Sales at BET Her where she manages over millions of dollars in revenue for the company. She’s the winner of several awards including the ADCOLOR Change Agent Award, the Black Girl Magic Award from Ohio State University and most recently, the Multichannel News 2018 Woman to Watch honor.
A woman of her accolades wasn’t built overnight, it took guts, goals, and investments.
“You cannot blossom into the person you are meant to become if you fail to invest in personal development,” she wrote. “People often confuse ‘investing in yourself’ as purchasing a new suit, designing a new logo, creating a website or even a new hairstyle! However, the true investment comes from securing a Life Coach, attending a Public Speaking course, reading books, attending an industry-related conference etc. and taking time out of the day to perfect your craft.” The ‘Stratechic’ expert encourages us to invest in ourselves so we can become who we were meant to be.

Sylvia Rhone, President of Epic Records, Ethiopia Habtemariam, President of Motown Records, & Juliette Jones, Executive Vice President of Urban Promotions at Atlantic Records, have been identified by Billboard Magazine, and their peers, as the most powerful women in the music entertainment industry.
In their cover stories and interview for the magazine, the Holy Music Trinity offer their advice on pushing yourself to learn more, accepting new challenges, overcoming obstacles, and so many more gems for the career inspired dreamers!

Sylvia Rhone on facing gender and racial bias when she first started at Elektra Entertainment:
“There were many in the music community who questioned my ability as an African-American and a woman to run a label. The notion existed that I would negatively change the culture of the company and convert it into an urban label.
Juliette Jones reflects on her first promotions job interview:
“It was 1994... the male senior executive who would be her boss presented her with an off-color scenario. What would she do if a radio-programmer asked her to perform oral sex on him to get a record played?
“I said I’d been taught that all is fair in love and promotion,” recalls the frank-talking Jones. “So if that’s what we have to do to get records played, then I’ll be in line -- right after the men. And he said, ‘You’re going to do great at this job.'”
Ethiopia Habtemariam on the importance of diversity in leadership roles:
“It’s on [music executives] to be vocal and active in creating opportunities,” she says. “Real initiatives need to be put in place. If the people working on a project don’t look like the people you’re trying to touch with your records, there’s a problem.”
Juliette Jones on gender bias in the entertainment industry:
“Consistently in my career, when I’m with artists, I’ve been harassed because it’s assumed the woman is a groupie,” says Jones. “Ten men with no credentials will walk ahead of me, but security will stop me. ‘Oh, that’s right,’” she says, laughing. “‘I’m here to try to sleep with Young Thug.’”
On how Sylvia Rhone found her passion:
“...Rhone, a Wharton School graduate, entered an international management program at Banker’s Trust that would have put her on the executive trajectory. Then, one day, she decided to wear pants to work. “They told me to go home and change” into a skirt, says Rhone. “I never went back.
Instead, she bet on a dream she had harbored since college, when “play big sister” Suzanne de Passe (their mothers were friends) took Rhone and six of her friends to a concert headlined by a group de Passe was managing: The Jackson 5. “I watched her working,” says Rhone, “and something clicked.”
Ethiopia Habtemariam on silencing the critics:
“I heard people say, ‘Oh, she got the job just because she’s a black woman and they’re just trying to cover their asses,’” she says. “OK, cool. Even if that was the case, it’s on me. What am I going to do to make an impact and assure that other people get these kinds of opportunities in the future? Plus, I love proving people wrong.”
Juliette Jones on how she learned to keep up as a woman in a male-dominated industry:
As a woman, “if you complained, you were going to be out,” she remembers. “I knew a woman who was blackballed for almost 10 years for complaining. So I just did the best I could.”
Sylvia Rhone on confidence in the industry:
“As a woman, you have to come from a position of confidence,” she says. “There’s a certain gift that women have in their management style that’s more inclusive than a male counterpart’s. One of the keys is to always be your best self. There’s no secret formula to it. You just have to understand that you’re managing a team of people, whether it’s two or 100, that is far more important than you.”

““Honestly, it was hard for me to book [roles] as an early teen, because it just wasn’t inclusive then for mixed or ethnically ambiguous or black people, in general,” said Boe, whose father is Somali and mother is Norwegian. “There was nothing for that in the breakdown. They want to hire you in a family, and there were no mixed-race families on TV at that time. I would be sent out for Hispanic roles, but I don’t look Hispanic. I’d be sent for black roles, but I’m too white, and I’m too white to be black. They’d even send me on Asian roles.”

#DREAMNYC: Positive Affirmations & Why You Need to Take Them Seriously
“Watch your thoughts for they become words, watch your words for they become actions, watch your actions for they become habits, watch your habits for they become character, watch your character it becomes your destiny.”
Even if you haven’t typed ‘INSPIRATIONAL/MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES’ during a Google Image or Pinterest search, someone you know and trust has told you this same idea in a 1000 different ways.
To think that the thoughts you have right now can shape your destiny seems a little dramatic at first, but there are loads of articles, podcasts, YouTube videos, movies, AND studies which all point to one conclusion: POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS ARE THE WAVE!
How often has your mother quizzically postulated the question, “Why cry over spilled milk?” Why not acknowledge, “Yes, the milk has spilled!” and, if there is more milk in the fridge, go get another glass? If there isn’t any more milk in the fridge, I can assure you more won’t fall into your glass after you’ve cursed yourself for being, “so [insert all of the various names you may call yourself after spilling the last bit of milk everywhere]”. People who are true to their affirmation practice forgive themselves and find something else to drink.
According to a 2015 Huffington Post article, researchers split 282 people into three separate role-playing experiments. “The study discovered that those assigned high-power roles, such as job recruiters or salespeople, tended to succeed under pressure compared to their low-power counterparts playing roles like job candidates and consumers.”
In a final experiment, participants were told the exercise would be an assessment of their negotiating skills. Researchers found that when the low-power players recited or wrote down encouraging self-affirmations about their abilities, it seemed to reduce the power gap between the two positions.
What do these personality and social psychology studies mean for you? It means that when you remind yourself of who you truly are, what you’re truly capable of, all backed up by things you have accomplished in the past, your mind, body, and spirit feed into that energy. “Your body directs itself towards the things you direct it towards. It works off of affirmations in the now and can shift in an instant,” according to a Thrive Global article on the subject. “We tend to utilize mind intelligence to guide our lives and discount the remarkable capacity for the body to lead us to successful connections with other people, places, and opportunities.”
By this definition, the power of our words can truly reshape our destinies in the here and Now. The next time you wake up in the morning, I challenge you to become cognizant of what you say and do. How do you feel? Then I want you to take action. Instead of reaching for your phone or labeling yourself as a morning grouch, say, “Today is going to be a great day. I can feel it now.” And AFFIRM IT. Declare that day as a great one and be rooted in the truth and power of that declaration.

The air inside of an airplane at regular altitudes is not good for our skin. Carrying sheet masks with you on the plane recharges your skin with moisture. My favorites are the Dr Jart+ Water Replenishment Sheet Masks. These are great for putting that moisture right back where it belongs. Use one right at the beginning of your flight and then once again at the end.
Keep your Eyes Shut!
Sleeping on planes, no matter what class you are in, is difficult! Eye masks make a huge difference when you need to keep your eyes closed and get some rest. Other passengers around you have their televisions on and keep the airplane windows open. Prevent eye strain with these really comfy ones from the EvasEmporium Etsy store!
