Chord is three chaps from Birmingham making indie pop that they say sounds like a blend of Massive Attack and New Order. Consider that because it could be your indie pop dreams come true and then – only then – have a listen to the really quite beautiful “Someone”. Opening like an outtake from Massive Attack‘s “Teardrop” and seguing into a wash of lush pop-era Cocteau Twins, there is also a delicious layer of indie pop as spearheaded by the likes of Athlete. Life Support Machine is very indicative of their sound, exhibiting passionately soaring vocal melodies against thematically textured production, wrapped up in a soulful lyrical display of emotional vulnerability. It's a nice blend of interweaving electronics and acoustics. Supported by a pulsing beat and a thought-provoking melancholic rhythm line, the single is truly "the sound that love makes." With infectious lyrics and a general feel-good vibe, this song couldn't be more referential to the Britpop elements that the guys cite as sonically influential. The song dynamically builds into a developing electro outro, that is simply to die for. Life Support Machine is a fantastic addition to the ranging CHORD discography, fitting nicely between the darker atmospheric electronics and the delicately yearning alternative love-songs.
