He would have rolled her eyes if he had the time. Her laughter was derisive and probably in regard to him saying she could keep her panties on. Sure, it had been flippant to just say that out loud, but he had meant it with the sincerity and the severity the situation itself required. It hadnât been a joke to him, although now he saw where she had thought it might have been. Even so, she tried to kick him and he couldnât really blame her at all. He was a stranger to her. And strangers, anymoreâŚcouldnât be trusted blindly.
Just by examining the wound he could tell it had been closed before. He couldnât tell how sheâd ripped it open but she had; perhaps it was the way she pushed on, walking on it without giving it breaks, or perhaps it had been in a fight with someone orâŚsomething. Whatever the cause he knew it would take a while to get her back on her feet, theoretically and actually, even after he mended it. âAlright⌠Take a deep breath if ya can, darlinâ⌠Iâm startinââŚâ He had cleaned his hands with alcohol from his bag, threaded the needle and splashing the same alcohol over her wound. It stung, he knew that from experience. But she never made a sound and that was more than he could ask. She was tougher than she put on, and that was saying something.
He was done before long. He was adept at it. Heâd done this a thousand times, in his daily life at work andâŚsometimes at home for himself, for his sisters, for other people he knew. She didnât speak until it was all over. His eyes found hers in the dim light of the lantern heâd lit inside his spacious tent. He was thankful now that heâd gotten the more expensive tent for a small family that had been for sale at the local sporting goods store.
âMy name is Michael, Michael Monroe.â He began, sure she meant that as to who he was in a less physical sense. More like who he was when no one was looking⌠âWhy I do this and everything else is all tied up in who I am. I used to be an EMT. I was a healer. I took care of people when they couldnât take care of themselves, in their worst moments, at their worst. I know it canât always be like that now, but I try to when I can. Keeping a little bit of humanity alive, keeping my humanity alive. There has to be somewhere out there, someday if not right now, where thatâs not just a memory.â He smirks a bit, cleaning off his hands from her blood with alcohol soaked gauze. Her wound was covered in packing gauze and rolled gauze, taped in such a way that the stitched wound would still breathe. âSo, itâs nice to meet youâŚ?â He paused, as if to ask her name.
She was only half conscious to answer anything that he said to her, which he probably would have been able to tell. She normally wouldnât have let anyone call her darling after all. Not only did it freak her out in general but it was also just grossly wrong when used in reference to her. By the time he was done and answering her half-baked question, she was looking at him with exhausted, only partly open, in awe eyes.
Her body was humming in that way it did when something horrible had happened to it and youâre brain shut down because it just plain couldnât deal with it. Long throat worked, the slender column sucking in and out as she tried to swallow, trying to remain in some kind of control, even if it was just making her tongue and throat work. Her dark eyebrows drew together as he explained himself, his and his ability to help her, his reasoning for not letting her die, which honestly probably would have been his smartest move. Mainly because that humanity he talked about had never really existed. Not that she could argue with him the way she was laying with what he had just done for her. It was way more human than anything she had seen in a long timeâŚ.if ever. Â
âK-Keera.â She stammered her own name when she tried to make her voice work for the first time. It felt alien and so out of place on her tongue, both from trying not to scream while he stitched her up and from not saying it for so long. Her eyes closed as she felt a wave of dizziness pass over her but she couldnât let herself pass out in his company. Even if it didnât matter much. Either way he was the one in complete control in this situation.  âMichael The EMT. I dont have anything to give you for doing this.â She gritted out, looking up at the top of the tent as if it would give her some Clarity.
âKeera.â He repeated her name like an oath, smiling soft at the end. âItâs been a pleasure tâmake yer âquaintance then.â He turns down the lantern until itâs barely lit, the flame inside dancing so very weakly. âDonâ⌠Donâ worry âbout it. Didnâ do this tâget anythinââŚâ His large hands that had been stained with her blood only moments before, waved that off like it didnât matter. âJust glad I could⌠Been a while since I could help somebodyâŚâ
The silence fell in around them as the light barely illuminated anyone or anything inside the tent. The night sounds in the woods around them, outside the barriers of the tent material filtered in; owls hooted softly in the trees and hurried scurrying in the underbrush as small critters ran to a safe place trying to evade the undead shuffling about. The walking dead were more active at night, so he rarely slept well; he preferred to stay to himself and stay quiet at night like this but, it looked like tonight he might not sleep at all.
âListen, try not tâmove âround too much âer make a lot oâ tâdo⌠Just rest. We can talk moreân the morninâ. Yer safe tânight⌠I promise.â

Just Our Luck || Alex & Michael
There was no doubt in Michaelâs heart that stopping right now put more and more time and miles between him and his sisters. They could already be too late, and heâd never know it; it was all a matter of how one looked at thingsâŚ
âMâjust worried âbout my girls, sâallâŚâ He shakes his head to dispel the thoughts they might be suffering right this very moment. Images conjured of broken bones and bleeding open wounds⌠âBut theyâre tough anâ I know they must have made it tâbe tâgether in the same place. Did I tell ya Katie was off in California? I donâ know what for⌠Probably tâbe an artist âer somethinââŚâ He looked over at her as they pulled off and she said she had to pee.
The truck finally stopped dead and Michael moved to put it in park. He engaged the parking brake just to make sure if someone tried to hope in and get it going immediately, theyâd be stymied by where and how to release the brake. If they were, indeed, staying the night here heâd have to think of a better way to ensure their vehicle would still be here in the morningâŚ
He was rolling up his window as she got done speaking. âMaybe, guess weâll see if anybodyâs home âer not.â He grinned just a bit, knowing that if there had been a living person inside theyâd have already met with resistance and an undead person inside meant immediate threat but none for meeting long term goals. âAlmost hope they have Kirkland brand, the way ya always ask if thereâs soft toilet paper wherever we goâŚâ He grins though, teasing her. âBut Iâll check for ya, donâ worry.â
Alex rolled her eyes as she shut the truckâs door quietly behind her. She met his eyes over the top of the truck and smirked. âYou would hope for that, asshole,â she teased. She stretched her body just enough for various parts of her to give a pop or a crack as she readjusted to being upright once again. She used to love taking road trips, but that all changed when life became a constant road trip.
She gripped the ax handle tightly in her left hand and headed toward the RV a couple yards away from the parked truck. âIf your sisters are anything like you, theyâre just as stubborn.â She glanced all around their surroundings, not wanting anything to surprise them as they tried to determine how safe the campsite was. âI donât hear anything moving around inside.â
She approached the door and reached to grab the handle. âReady?â Her head swiveled as she tried to meet his eyes to get his go ahead.
He couldnât help but chuckle when she joked back with him, calling him an asshole. He held up his hands in a defensive but open posture that read like he was sorry but what could he say. His eyes nearly sparkled with the playfulness that was still inherent in his being but not able to come out to play very often anymore.
Michael had his hand on his belt, as close to his knife without gripping the handle, just in case a normally friendly person were there who would strike out immediately in defense of their goods and their safe spot, and their lives. He nodded with the talk of his sisters, thanking Alex with a soft smile that said he appreciated the gesture she showed him, reassuring him like that. âMe neither.â He replied to the latter comment, in regard to the RV. âCanâ be too careful, though.â He nods once at her. He was ready.
âGo.â He told her. It was simple and to the point and yet the sound of it didnât carry like so many other words with more syllables. As soon as she popped the seal on the door with the handle, he regretted everything heâd just said. He hadnât been readyâŚ
The stench from inside that came pouring out like a thick blanket on the air was overwhelming. It hit him hard and it doubled him over. He coughed and retched for a full three minute beat, holding his hand to his mouth in order to subconsciously stem the need to vomit. âSweet JesusâŚâ He mumbled, still doubled over and not looking at anything but grass and dirt and his shoes.
Rid of the Pain || Charley and Michael
He waved it off that they were implied as any sort of trouble to him. âItâs no trouble, really. I do what I can for myself anâ Iâd just do the same for ya both.â His eyebrows were raised up higher on his forehead however, nodding quickly that he would still teach her whatever she had to know. âAnâ I donât expect ya tâbe dependent âer nothinâ. I know yaâll pull yer weight.â
Just then there was definitely the sound of a group of vehicles in the distance. He knew the sound of larger vehicles like trucks because of the rig he drove with his partner as a paramedic/EMT. Those were definitely trucks, economy style that could transport big loads when need be. Even before her behest of possibly getting off the road for a bit, Michael raised a hand up and put his index finger to his lips, making a shushing motion, the other hand waving them forward a bit, more toward him.
âI think thatâd be a good idea⌠Why donât yâall follow me, now? AlrightâŚ? Iâll get ya clear oâ whateverâs cominââŚâ He knew she heard it too. âCâmon now⌠We gotta get off the road. Follow me, ya hear?â He grabbed Charleyâs free hand and tugged, rushing to the side of the road into the tree line. âWeâll make it to the place Iâm held up in. We can. Just keep close and letâs keep quiet.â He looked down to the boy. âRight, Sammy? Weâll keep quiet and low. Itâll help mama out a lot, alright?â
Samâs eyes were wide, terror is written all over his face. He gripped her hand so tightly that his knuckles were bone white. He nodded at Michael and kept as close to his Mom as he could possibly get and still be able to walk.
Charleyâs heart was in her throat. She held her breath, knowing that they couldnât make any mistakes right now. Their very lives depended on making it to his place and out of immediate danger. She didnât dare utter a word of protest as he took her hand and she let herself be lead away from the highway.
Under any other circumstances, she wouldnât have ever followed a stranger into the woods, but something about him made her trust him almost immediately. Even with Sam. Her head turned, making sure that Sam was visibly okay. She knew he was still with her on account of the grip he had on her hand, but there was something about seeing him that made her relax. Even if it was only a little bit.
The sound got closer and closer even as they moved deeper into the woods and away from the road. She could only hope that if they found them that they were of the friendly variety. She tugged on Michaelâs hand to slow him up a bit. âNot so fast. His legs are not as long as ours,â she reminded him about Sam.
Michael moved fast. He didnât want to hazard that whatever ruckus there was on the street was going to see them and create a problem for them, take their stuff and leave them without anythingâŚor worse. And heâd seen worse; a small group of men had beaten and raped a few young ladies out on the highway just outside Atlanta. Afterwards they must have shot them in the head because he found them laid out naked in the grass in the gulley on the side of the macadam. Heâd been an EMT and a police officer in training; nothing about that sat well with him as a cop, as a healerâŚas a man. Heâd been raised so much better by his mama and his sister, Bobby. Of course, heâd spent the better part of the next day digging them graves. It was just who he wasâŚ
âKeep movinââŚcâmonâŚâ He whispered low but forceful back at them. The sounds of the vehicles and the shouts and hollers of some men could now be heard closer behind. That wasnât reassuring in the slightest, even as they moved off into the brush where sound echoed and carried.
âVehicle three miles back, engine was still hot!â They could head someone yell. âGotta be âround here somewhere!â
âShitâŚâ He cursed under his breath. It was a flippant response without an actual thought and he hoped the young boy with his mother didnât hear it; or her, for that matter. When she pulled on his hand he looked back and he shook his head. âWe canât slow up. I donât have a good feelinâ âbout these people. Anâ they know weâre out here since that was my truck they just spoke âboutâŚâ He gestured to Sam. âCan I take him? He could climb on my back anâ Iâll carry himâŚ?â

Just Our Luck || Alex & Michael
He certainly hadnât expected his life to turn out like thisâŚ
On the last day of the civilized world, when everything fell apart and the dissention in the ranks started Michael Monroe headed back to Georgia to find his sisters. They were all he had left in this world that mattered and he was going to find them before they, too, were gone. Yes, it was nearly laughable to think they were still alive out there but⌠It was still early. Not too much time had passed. He would feel it if they were gone. They were all in the womb together. They were all connected. He would just know⌠And he didnât feel anything other than an overwhelming need to get there, to get to them.
His last day in the city heâd stopped by the hospital where heâd been employed. The Emergency unit was a blood bath. Not a single person was left alive there; undead and torn flesh were all that was left. That was a good thing because Michael had taken an oath to protect and save who he could and to do no harm, similar to those promises doctors made. But even he knew there was no helping the infected. If they were infected they were already dead. Heâd collected all the supplies he could manage in three large duffel bags: bandages, antibiotics, pain killers, blood thinners and coagulants, tubing and syringes to run IVs, and other essentials he might need to use. Heâd also collected his ex-girlfriend in Detective Alex Eames.
Theyâd dated for the better part of a year. Okay, so they hadnât actually dated; it was more that theyâd had a connection and theyâd been something casual, something without a label, and theyâd fucked a lot too. It hadnât been so casual to him but thenâŚthatâs likely why theyâd split anyway. No one got close to a detective who saw things that Alex had seen and despite his willingness to want someone close to him no one could really get close to him either. He saw a lot of the same horrible things as she did. He picked up the remnants after the detectives left the scene with the living. He took the dead and he took the living, less often the first but the latter, wounded; he would always ferry the wounded like some sort of twisted Angel of Death that just refused to let death take what it was owed. Anyway, heâd found her there and he took her with him because she was and always would be special to him.
The window was down on his side, too. He looked over at her as she spoke. Those eyes were begging for something, anything, that would ease the growing pit in his stomach. It wasnât hunger. It was all this stopping! Why had there been so many miles between him and his home!? âI didnât wanna stop âtil we got to the Georgia state line. Iâm sorryâŚâ He smiled sheepishly. âJust anxious to get where weâre headedâs allâŚâ His azure eyes with a hint of brown in the left one shone with hope but darkened for a moment at the prospect of stopping. âBut yer rightâŚwe should stop fer the night.â
Too dead to Dance|| Micheal & Keera
Michael wasnât aware of her past. Even if he had known, though, it wouldnât have stopped him from almost forcing her to stay â okay, so heâd made her pass out but all that had kind of been for her own good because the woman wasnât going to take his words at face value. Hardship and bad experiences abound in the world the way they found it now; it became normal even though it was far from what normal had always been and what had been expected. He was proof of all that. His past⌠That had been pretty rough tooâŚ
The sounds sheâd made prior to actually going out had been pitiful. It was a good thing he wasnât one of those monsters out there, one of the living that took advantage. If he had been, that might well have been an invitation to take advantage of more than just her stuff; as it was he had a rough time ignoring her body as started to take her pants off. Yeah, he could have just cut her pant leg and ripped it back to get to the wound but that was a tad bit rash considering they had to save whatever clothes they could anymore. It wasnât like you could wash themâŚat least not easily. âShhhhâŚIâm not gonâ rape ya. Ya can keep yer panties on. This ainât âbout thatâŚâ And though he ran his hands over her porcelain thighs, down her legs to her calves and the one that was hurt, he didnât linger; it wasnât about that. âYer gonâ need some stitches, darlinâ⌠Mâsorry in âdvanceâŚâ
She was alert pretty quickly after Michael started working. It didnât help that he didnât have any real anesthetic to speak of and each pass of the needle and the antiseptic filled her with more pain than the last. He worked as fast as he could, as cleanly as he could; by the time he was done the young woman was fully awake but in shock, as much as he could gather. The pain was a lot to take. Although, heâd only be guessing because she hadnât actually said anythingâŚ
âItâs okay now. Just stay off of it for now, okay? Stay with meâŚâ
Rid of the Pain || Charley and Michael
Michael knew how that was. Heâd just been thinking it, really. Far too many people survived the end of the world that just didnât deserve to. Just the other day heâd had it out with singular white male, approximately Mikeâs own age, verbally and physically. Thankfully Michael had his weapon drawn quickly and had been able to scare the other off; it was odd but the man hadnât had a gun on him at all, at least that was evident or he would have probably used it. âDarnâŚsorry to hear that. Just glad ya both are alright. Thatâs all that matters in the endâŚâ
As they walked, Sam hung onto Mikeâs hand and that in itself put a smile on the manâs face. It put some extra pep in his step. Nobody could really live when they were too busy surviving day by day; it was nice now to have a moment to enjoy the small things like an innocentâs hand in his adult larger rougher one. Charleyâs words were surprising; he knew she wanted to make it up to him for taking care of them and everything but, it really wasnât necessary and on top of all thatâŚhe wasnât used to it. Heâd been on his own for so longâŚ
âIâm sure ya can. Looks like yer boyâs well fedâŚgrowinâ like a weed, right?â Mike grinned a bit as the boy beamed back up at him. âNeed to double my efforts gettinâ food set in from now onâŚlong as yâall wanna stick âround with meâŚâ He nods.
Light at the End | Desiree & Michael
Desiree listened attentively to his comments about how the hospital was arranged and how suicide probably wasnât one of the most frowned upon ways out in todayâs zombie filled world. She shook her head almost immediately. âDidnât come this far tâ blow mâ brains out fer someone to stumble âcross. âer to serve as some walker main courseâ, she smirked faintly as her gun hands started to come down a little bit but she was still on guard. By now sense should have been screaming at her that he wasnât after her goods because he already stocked up on plenty of his own. Truth was, Desiree had started out alone in this journey to the safe place, or what she called it. The blonde knew an attractive man when she saw when and the boy with the pretty eyes in front of her was definitely impressive. She was surprised he didnât have a little damsel in distress wife clinging on to his hand and screaming at the sound of leaves blowing in the wind outside. Michael went to move off back into the wild and Desiree swallowed hard, lowering her gun down immediately. She had a funny feeling it would show as weakness or fear but, she was tired of talking to herself. It was a lonely road and she wasnât about to fully give up this tall drink of water who miraculously stumbled in her way. âWait!â, she called before she did a little skip and her hair swished back and forth as she ran up to him, having to look up. âI ainât really that nasty. Iâm headinâ tâ the CDC and Iâm shit outta maps. âSides, yâ ainât got much room tâ talk, darlinâ, didnât even offer a girl yer name.âÂ
Mike nodded. âYeah, I figured ya wasnâ one oâ those types. Neither am I. Well, like I said good dayâŚâ
He stopped abruptly in his tracks and turned back to her as she finished calling to him. âShhhh! Christ, keep yer voice down!â Michael stage yells at her as he turns on her, taking a step in her direction even as she skips to his side. Her gun is fully lowered now and he doesnât feel even the slightest lick of fear from her direction. Heâs not going to die today; heâd not going to die until he finds his sisters. Even if the journey itself kills him⌠âFirst oâ all, donâ skip or run with a gun âless ya got the safety on. Shit is dangerous⌠Yaâll put yer eye out if nothinâ else⌠Second, I donâ think the CDC knows whatâs goinâ on here. Was an EMT at this here hospital and I donâ even know what this is⌠And I seen some pretty crazy shit already⌠I donâ mean to scare ya; Iâm just sayinâ what I know to be fact and what I think. Donâ want ya gettinâ yer hopes up eitherâŚâ
There was a moment of silence as Mike considered the situation between them. âI donâ mean to keep pointinâ out yer shortcominâs but ya didnâ really gimme yer name eitherâŚâ He smirked a bit, cocky, teasing and playful. âMy nameâs Michael. Call me Mike fer short if ya want⌠And yaâreâŚ?â

âFuck my shit!? Really!?â His southern accent was thick even through the blood in his mouth and nose. If his mouth wasnât open it went straight down his throat and he knew heâd come to regret that later; eating anything of substance with iron rich blood pooled in your gut was nothing if not bad news. âYa come at me like that and ya fuckinâ break my noseâŚâ ProbablyâŚprobably, she broke his nose⌠âAnd yaâre just gonna leave my shit here and go!? Yaâre hurt! Lemme fuckinâ help!â
He got to her just as she was passing out from the blood loss and pain. His face was close enough to her that her weak hand met with his broken nearly broken maybe nose, pushing his face to the side a bit more, making him recoil the slightest bit. âYaâre fuckinâ adamant, arenât ya? ChristâŚâ He actually snickered a bit, as well as he could through the bloodied nose and draining down his throat, thick tongue. She fell into a deep state of unconsciousness and he immediately picked her up off the ground, carrying her bodily to his tent and laid her inside on his sleeping bag. He looked down at her there, out of it and looking peaceful in the moment, and he smiled slyly once more. âStay. Good girl.â He chortled, snorting through some coagulated blood. âIâll be right back.â
Before he left he tied up his belt around her thigh, making it as tight as he dared so as not to cut off all the circulation but to stop the heavy pulse that threatened to bleed her out. He ran back outside and grabbed the bag of his things. He no sooner reached them than sounds in the brush forced him to pull his buck knife. Three came out of the tree line into the clearing together. It looked like maybe theyâd been together when theyâd been turned; their clothing had the same muddy red clay on it â like some creek bed might have left behind on them â and they were both in the same state of disrepair as far as decay went. âDamnâŚâ He whispered when he saw them. The one was a kid; couldnât have been anymore than ten years of ageâŚ
When he returned the bag was slung over his shoulder, bulk resting on his back. The wild woman of Borneo who had almost taken him out was still laid out on his sleeping bag. It was a good thing; the blood on his shirt and pants wasnât his, black with the bacteria decaying it as it sat congealed in the Walkerâs veins; but it still wasnât a pretty sight. Despite her attacking him he didnât really relish the idea of scaring her further. âAlright, darlinâ⌠Yaâll have to âxcuse the terrible bedside manner and my distressed appearance but ya caught me at a bad timeâŚâ He spoke to her as if she could hear him. âBut donâ say I didnâ warn ya I could help⌠Alright⌠Letâs get to itâŚâ

Light at the End | Desiree & Michael
Michael wasnât the first Desiree had come across on the road so far. She had met a set of brothers further down in the lower parts of Georgia who thought they would be doing her a favor by hitting her square in the face with the ass end of their gun before stealing all her supplies. She had so much more than what she did now but now her thoughts on others were tainted by that unlucky event. She was the popular girl in high school. The one everyone wanted but she always kept a humble head on her shoulders. All she ever wanted was love and acceptance, thatâs how her mother had raised her. Instead of making a name for herself, she decided to give back her time, working as a middle school History teacher. Back on the topic, Desiree had been on the road for a while now, just trying to make it to the CDC where apparently they had shelter and the hopes of a cure. She wasnât much for science and math but she would volunteer her services however the officials would need once she got there. In the back of her mind, she was always hoping to stumble into the path of someone she once knew.Â
Desiree kept her eyes in the sights of her gun, pointed in the direction of where the maleâs voice came from. She wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt from the sincerity of his tone but if he was bigger than her, she could get taken down and stolen from once again. âNah, I ainât bitâ, she shared with him, swallowing hard as she planted her feet into the cracking tiles below. âYâ a doctor er somethinâ?â, the blonde called out to him, she asked out of pure curiosity. What if he had gotten all the good stuff, the stuff that could help her stay alive? Des let out a little sigh as she felt her head start pounding again. She easily would have picked this place to crash in for the night but it was so big, too big to possibly clear out and feel safe inside. The days were long and hot under the Georgia sun so it was no wonder someone would want to camp out instead of wandering around aimlessly. She once had a map with drawn out plans to the CDC but the dynamic douchebag duo had stolen that from her as well.Â
Mike kept his eyes on her at all times. His hands hadnât been up until heâd seen the rifle come into view. At that point both duffle bags slid off his shoulder, down his arm to his elbow before he straightened his arm and let them both drop to the floor. His hands raised now, eyebrows raised too. âThatâs an awful big gun fer a liâl girl. Not to say youâre liâl so much as that gun is big. Big fer anybodyâŚâ He grinned a bit, sly. âItâs good yer not bit. Iâm not a doctor, naw. I was an EMT. I ran with one oâ those ambulances outside. Still got the keysâŚâ Michael reached down, careful and slow, showing her where he was going with that hand before jangling his pocket, the set of keys tinkling inside. âMy plan was to gather everythinâ I could and move on. Iâm lookinâ fer my sisters. We always said if somethinâ went down weâd always meet up back home, here, so far I ainât found âem but Iâm on my way to my sister Bobbyâs houseâŚâ He trailed off, thinking he might be saying too much. âWhatâs yer plan, here? Ya âlone? Ainât good to be âlone out hereâŚâ
When the man started to lower everything he had down, her guard came down a little as well. If he was as savage as she was thinking he was, he could have shot her dead the moment he came around the corner. Instead he was flashing her little million dollar smiles and talking about his family. If it was all a decoy, it was a pretty damn good one. Desiree smirked and tilted her head to the side when he commented on her size and her bad boy in her hands. âYâ sure yâ ainât a crazy person âscaped from the loonie lodge upstairs? Look awful happy fer a boy whoâs got a gun shoved up his noseâ, she commented, looking a little more settled than first appearance. Her light hues finally shifted to the bags that had collapsed onto the floor and she nodded her head back as a gesture. âYou got all the good stuff?â, she asked him, wondering if sheâd find anything on this venture or if he was about to gallop into the sunset with everything the hospital had left to offer. âI came tâ visit my sick Nana but canât seem tâ find the damn gift shopâ, she teased before shaking her head. âCould say the same fer yâ, Casanova. Ainât no one in the houses âround here, sweets. Looks like they had a liâl time tâ pack up though. Ainât found nothinâ round here âsides food goinâ bad and some bandages. I may be alone, may not beâ, she lied at the end, not wanting to seem vulnerable.
Mike laughed out loud at her little threatening comment, funny though it turned out to be. At least to him⌠âI didnât âscape from upstairs â fer the record itâs called a mental health wing now. Itâs all politically correctâŚâ Michaelâs face was alight. âAlthough, some would wager anybody willinâly still âlive and tryinâ to survive in this is crazy as shitâŚâ He remained still for the most part, waiting to see what she would volunteer, if anything. âI got what I needed. I got moreân thatâŚâ He shrugs, ocean blue eyes locking with the femaleâs eyes. In his left eye he has a spot of brown, a condition known as sectoral heterochromia. Itâs caused by injury or familial traits that are handed down, most often, but injury is what caused his. His sisters and his own father hit him in the head by his eyes one too many times when he was taking the abusive fists in place of his sisters; he was always taking the hits because he was supposed to. His mother always told him: âyou have to look after them, Mikey.â âYouâve got to protect them.â âTheyâre ladies. You protect ladies and cherish them, Mikey.â
âGift shop is on this floor, now that you mention it. Down B wing; unfortunately, I donât think yaâll find anythinâ to help ya get outta here if shit hits the fan.â He smirks a bit. Clearly she didnât trust him and wasnât about to tell him the truth. Well, that was just fine; he didnât need the truth as long as she wasnât going to shoot him. âI see how it is⌠Thatâs alright⌠Take care oâ yerself thenâŚâ Michael waved at her before picking up the bags off the floor and shouldering them, turning around and heading for the open Exit.
