The definition of Facebook, for me at least, is TIME SUCK. Every time I feel stressed at work or bored with the kids Iād pop onto Facebook for a quick scroll through my newsfeed. That would lead to a post about cats sleeping in unusual places, which would then lead to a random TED talk, which would then lead me back to Facebook to see what Michaelās been up to for the last 4 years.
Itās the rabbit hole of the internet. Or am I supposed to say black hole? Whatever it is ā itās a path thatās hard to turn back from.
I decided 3 weeks ago to justĀ quit FacebookĀ cold turkey. I deactivated my account and said sayonara to ā12 ways to bake a boxed cakeā and ā70 things your kid should know before kindergartenā. Oh, and I said no thank you to thoseĀ potty training photosĀ of your kid too. I just said no thank you to it all.
In the last 3 weeks I have somehow found hours of extra time. Iāve been a lot more productive at work. I have given myself enough manicures before bed to ensure my nails always look perfect. Iāve participated more at my sonās baseball practices. Iāve reorganized countless closets. Iāve picked up my phone to actually call a friend to catch up! I feel like Iāve just earned a free hour in every day ā all because Iām not checking in on whatās going on at Facebook.
I have to admit it hasnāt been easy though. When Iām struggling with a work problem I still open Google Chrome and on autopilot type in āfacebook.comā. Luckily I canāt easily access my account so I snap out of it and face the work issue straight on. The first day I made 1,000 attempts to visit my news feed. Today, only 2.
It feels really good. Think you could do it? Just try.
