First pitch
Sadaharu Oh wasn't known for his pitching, but no better way to start the WBC Championship Round.
Is there room for two Captain Americas? Ryan Braun, good on you!
Profar, pro good.
Too bad that fundamental mistakes by American-born Denorfia and Rizzo allowed Puerto Rico to bat around the order and climb past Italy here in the bottom of the 8th.

To my ears there wasn't a trace of sarcasm
As Puerto Rico second baseman Irving Falu grounded out in the 3rd inning against Team USA, MLB Network announcer Matt Vasgersian coined a nickname:
"And there's a ground ball to Captain America himself, David Wright."
UPDATE from bottom of the inning:
Yup, this is definitely Wright's nickname for the rest of the tournament.
Vasgersian just called him "Captain America" as he walked to the batter's box.
Follow the link to see how Team USA's manager Joe Torre and bench coach Larry Bowa each reacted to an umpiring decision they disagreed with.
Fun game to play while you watch: based on this incredibly small sample size of their behavior, see if you can guess which of them managed the Yankees and which of them managed the Philles.
“There’s no truth to the rumor that after these games are over, Larry Bowa goes to a local Chucky Cheese’s and heckles the kids playing Whack-a-Mole.”
Matt Vasgersian, MLB Network announcer on Team USA bench coach Larry Bowa, 67.
Surprisingly robust applause as Willie Bloomquist enters the game. My guess: Canadian fans are clapping, because they think Bloomquist is Canadian, because they've never heard of him.
MLB Network really should update the “Most Players in WBC” graphic as teams are eliminated from the WBC.
Last I checked, the Venezuelan players aren’t “in” anything at this point ( except maybe the customs line getting back from Puerto Rico).

I guess it must be hard to practice fielding when it's snowing
In the top of the 4th with his team trailing 2-0, Ben Zobrist pushed a bunt to the left side with runners on first and second. Canadian third baseman Taylor Green initially broke toward third to cover his bag, assuming pitcher Jameson Taillon would be able to field the ball and get the force out at third.
However, when Green saw Taillon just standing around (working on his tan?), he sharply changed directions to scoop up Zobrist's bunt, but was rushing, and his throw sailed past the first baseman and allowed Team USA to score its first run of the game. Adam Jones' sacrifice fly in the next at bat tied up the score 2-2.
I don't play baseball for a living (no, really), so I'm not sure, but I think that's the second error for Taylor Green that happened because Jameson Taillon screwed up.
The man won 16 Gold Gloves, so...
Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Kaat is in the booth announcing today's USA-Canada game alongside MLB Network mainstay Matt Vasgersian.
After Canada's starter, Jameson Taillon, bailed on a high infield fly in the top of the 2nd inning, third baseman Taylor Green crossed the diamond to try to make the play, only he lost the ball in the "high sky," as the descending ball glanced off his glove. and the batter (Ben Zobrist) reached first base safely.
The official scorer blamed Green by "crediting" him with an error on the play, but Kaat (who won more Gold Gloves at the pitcher position than anyone who came before him) explained that Taillon really should have hung around the right side of the infield to track the ball in the air, and then direct another infielder to make the catch (if needed).
By simply pointing up in the air and scooting away, Kaat explained, Taillon wasn't really providing much in the way of helpful information. Kaat argued it wasn't fair of the official scorers to blame Green for trying to get in there and make a play.
I really appreciated hearing that kind of specific insight from a former pitcher, especially from one as gifted at fielding his position as Kaat.
Mission accomplished!
Tie game, based loaded situation for David Wright, American Hero.
What it means to be a Mets fan
As the sole representative from the New York teams, David Wright has the most established star quality on Team USA, and is pretty much being promoted as the face of the team. All I can think about is how poorly it reflects on us (yes, "us") that R.A. Dickey, who isn't even on the team anymore, coughed up two runs in the top of the first.

Good to see Joe Torre back in the dugout (especially with none of the other Yankees).
Yadier Molina speed update
He just stole third base.
